Images distort while editing

Seems like I can't really edit any images with iphoto's built in image editing feature. Trying to rotate, remove red eye etc always distorts the image to this:

Has anyone bumped into something similar?

Yes, thankfully, the photos are not being damaged. It is only how they are displayed. If you export them and view them in another tool, they are fine. In fact, if you know what edits to make without needing to see the results on screen, you can make the adjustment and go on to use the photo. Guessing CAN be difficult, in some cases...

Hopefully they fix the problem soon. It seems obvious to me that the it lies in how 10.6 is displaying images from iPhoto 09, even when everything is properly installed.

Misery loves company. Thought we were all alone with this problem of SL 10.6.1 and iPhoto 8.1. iPhoto had been installed for some time and working as expected. SL installed early September: (upgrade? I did not wipe the drive and start over). Using iMac20 with 2GB RAM, Apple generic memory and HD. 20 has been on the bench at the local dealer for a week. All hardware tests come back negative with some reference to anomalies in memory: video or RAM. I have reinstalled iLife'09, repaired permissions, repaired the disk, dumped many GB of files (needed doing anyhow). Dealer says fix is expensive (replace Logic Bd and RAM-Logic bd has video RAM on it) and not guaranteed to remove the problem. Dealer says we are only ones to complain of this. Editing on LSD happens in iPhoto and Aperature.

Am holding out for Apple fix. Can't believe we have all had a logic board melt down at the same time. Will keep checking back for that ray of hope. elf1

Please add me to the list of iPhoto users with this issue.

It definitely occurred after the SL upgrade.

I'm on iPhoto '09 ver. 8.1 (415)
10.6.1 build 10B504

Red or Green distortion with diagonal line.

Happens 80% of the time in full screen edit mode and 30% of the time in standard edit mode.

MacBook Pro
Intel Core 2 Duo
2.16 GHz

nice to find I'm not alone. Let's get a fix soon please!

Same image distortion using my iMac (2.16 Ghz, 3 Gig memory).

This is definitely an issue Apple needs to fix in iPhoto.

I upgraded to Snow Leopard first. The "old" iPhoto worked fine.

Added iLife 09, new iPhoto not working properly in edit mode. Total distortion exactly as in your link.

So, so far Snow Leopard has "broken" my old Hp all in one (PSC 2110), I can no longer scan, HP says no support for Snow Leopard, so I need to buy a new scanner or third party scan software!

And now, my most often used app, iPhoto is not working properly.

I too am experiencing this bug. Thought it was just me; maybe some faulty RAM or something. Guess Snow Leopard is the culprit. Has Apple even acknowledged this error?

What do you guys mean by 16 bit vs 32 bit? The color depth? Checked my display settings and didn't see how to adjust. Maybe because I'm on an older Intel Mac I can't boot in 64 bit?

Thanks!

Some folks have had success dealing with the issue by deleting the following plist files

com.apple.iApps.plist,
com.apple.iPhoto.plist
com.apple.iPhoto.LSSharedFileList.plist

From your HD/ Users / Your Name / Library / Preferences folder.

(Remember you'll need to reset your User options afterwards. These include minor settings like the window colour and so on. Note: If you've moved your library you'll need to point iPhoto at it again.)

I have had the same experience, with some further remarkable features.

The "red Eye" and the "retouch" tools are really random effect generators. Click on one of them and the photo might zoom, or it might be truncated to 2/3 its size, or it might rotate 180 degrees, or it might disappear, or it might do any combination of the above.

And while it is at it, it may or may not correct the red eye or effect the re-touch, with about equal probability.

As a casino game, it might be fun; as a device to expose my photos to, it is way too risky.

Why is it that every time Apple 'upgrades' iPhoto, it results in less reliable performance?

OK, When I installed Snow Leopard, iPhoto (from ilife 09) immediately became a nightmare, turning into the slowest application I have experienced since my first mac in 1984. And it crashed my iMac about 30 times in one evening - not just iPhoto, the whole shebang - I got the grey window shade screen of doom.

Someone advised me to search and remove every copy of any iPhoto library I had ever had, except the current one. I did that, backing them up to an external drive, and erasing them from my computer.

That significantly improved iPhoto's behaviour.

Until I tried to remove some red eye from a photo.

So, I ran a test - exporting two of the problem photos to a brand new MacBook Pro, importing them to iPhoto and trying again.

iPhoto in that configuration has the same propensity to please gamblers, and disappoint anyone who values predictability and certainty of result.

Welcome to the Apple Discussions. Did you try an of the fixes previously suggested in this topic? That is delete the iPhoto preference file and rebuild the library?

Are you able to create a new library, import some photos and edit normally? If so then it's a damaged library. If that's the case and a normal rebuild doesn't help use iPhoto Library Manager to rebuild the library as follows:

Using iPhoto Library Manager to Rebuild Your iPhoto Library
1 -Download iPhoto Library Manager and launch.

2 -Click on the Add Library button, navigate to your User/Pictures folder and select your iPhoto Library folder.

3 - Now that the library is listed in the left hand pane of iPLM, click on your library and go to the File->Rebuild Library menu option

4 - In the next window name the new library and select the location you want it to be placed.

5 - Click on the Create button.

Note: This creates a new library based on the LIbraryData.xml file in the library and will recover Events, Albums, keywords, titles and comments but not books, calendars or slideshows. The original library will be untouched for further attempts at fixing or in case the rebuilt library is not satisfactory .
