Aperture is very slow with Snow Leopard

Hello,
I updated my MyBook with Snow Leopard. The (big) problem is that Aperture 2.1.4 is now very slow when I make change to images. CPU usage is very high and Aperture is unusable.
What can I do?
Thanks in advance.

It could be dependent on video card and VRAM amount, among other things. It could be more prevalent among NVIDIA than ATI, or some other number of things. There are lots of Mac models out there, and to assume performance of something so complicated as RAW decode over Core Image would be equally (or equally non-) affected on all is a tough bet.

I for one have noticed a slowdown among images with lots of edits (and in particular crops) with my NVIDIA 8800. I have reported it to Apple; I would encourage all others who are seeing it to do the same, with specifics on your setup.

Also have real problems with Aperture on Snow Leopard. Painfully slow and, although I have downloaded and installed Epson's new drivers for my SP1800 printer, the profiles I had previously installed no longer work. If I choose the correct paper for my print job, I get a horrible magenta saturated print. The retailer I usually buy my computer related stuff from says Apple is working on a patch for Aperture but so far I haven't seen anything to confirm this.

No, only the ones I had previously set up for Epson and Hahnemuhle specialty papers.
There was another issue I had when first using my Epson printer with Snow Leopard in that it appeared to me that the new driver I downloaded from Epson gave me very limited functionality. It turned out that the driver I was actually using was not that provided by Epson. Here is the response I got from Epson Tech support:

"You're currently not using an Epson printer driver. You're using a driver provided by Apple.

Please try the following:

1. Click Apple...System Preferences...Print & Fax
2. Select your printer and delete it (click -)
3. Download the latest printer driver from www.epson.com
4. (Optional, but recommended) During the driver install, when you see Easy Install, change to Uninstall and click Uninstall
5. Open Mac HD...Applications...Utility
6. Double-Click Disk Utility
7. Select the Mac HD and perform: Repair Disk Permissions
8. Install the downloaded driver normally
9. Click Apple...System Preferences...Print & Fax
10. Add a printer (Click +)
11. Select your printer and click Add
12. Try printing"

Yeah, I totally concur, this is ridiculous. I have an HP printer and I've tried removing the printer and all trace of the existing HP drivers and then installed the 10.6 drivers from HP's website. The problem still persists.

I am very surprised that this problem even exists, this should have reared it's head during Apple's Snow Leopard testing and been resolved there and then.

My Snow Leopard upgrade now feels somewhat lacking.

I am using a MacPro (early 2008 with 8 cores, 8 GB of RAM and four internal HDs).
Before I upgraded to Snow Leopard I used Aperture a lot. My RAW-File collection is well over 10,000 images (all CANON EOS 5D) and many of them were edited with Aperture.

After the upgrade to Snow Leopard there was a sudden and very apparent slow down.
When I stack up a few modifications the preview responds so slowly that it's almost unusable. After the press of a button or a shift of a slider it may take several seconds before the preview refreshes. Under 10.5 I could hardly notice any delay under the same circumstances.

BTW, all my images are referenced (on a second internal hard disc).

I just hope they get this corrected with the next release of SL. 10.6.2 should be out in a few days.

Aperture 2.1.4 was slow but acceptably slow with Leopard for me. It processed 5D RAW files fine, but struggled with 5D Mk 2 and TIFF files from Hasselblad/Phocus.

Under Snow Leopard it is now unacceptably slow and-worse- freezes and crashes with depressing regularity on the 5D Mk 2 and 'Blad files. It also frequently ignores retouch commands, takes forever to generate thumbnails and previews, takes ages to load and import pics, and is generally running like a complete dog.

I've just ordered lightroom 2 (desperate measures- anything to avoid having to try to organise, lightly retouch and batch process thousands of shots with Photoshop CS4- it is just not the right tool for the job). I don't hold out much hope for falling in love with LR2's workflow, LR1 was awful, but better to have a reliable but awkward workflow rather than a lovely but unstable and glacially slow one.

I hope Aperture 3 / SL 6.2 comes out soon and fixes these issues, but in the meantime I've got to find a workflow that actually gets the work done 😟 😟 😟
