Mail is periodically downloading hundred's of emails that have already been read. This is happening across several accounts and machines. The email accounts are all POP.
This is a very annoying bug. Getting 150 mail messages dumped into my In box is not a good thing!
I can set the preferences to delete off the server immediately, but then I can't read these messages on my iPhone.
I too have this problem with Exchange (not a POP account). I get double messages and if I delete one, the other disappears as well. I have had some success in disabling and account, waiting a minute or so, then re-enabling it. But this does work 100% of the time. I'm learning to live with have 2 of the same message in my Inbox, but I'm not happy with it.
I found a solution for the duplicate emails arriving into my POP accounts after 10.6.1 upgrade.
Under the preferences for the account go to Advanced then where it says "Remove copy from server after retrieving a message" change the drop down to immediately. Save your settings and do a check mail. The email should download one more time then never again. I switched the setting back to a month and no more duplicates.
I experienced the duplicate email phenomenon twice but I'm using OS X 10.5.8. My Mail program has been erratic for the last couple of weeks. Sometimes it cannot connect to my mail server unless I restart. This behavior also happened on my iBook running the same operating system. Currently everything is running but I did nothing except restart when to problem occurred.
I also have problems with my mail...but only the RSS...I have sometimes 2 messages of a king...but the problem is that I can't delete them:(((...I delete the messages...I remove them from trash also and if I quit mail and open it again...there they are...again...How do I fix this???
This is definetly a SL issue - I am not using Exchange. I have read almost every thread I can find on this subject - different symptons, multiple 'fixes', different email providers and servers, POP, IMAP, etc... all with one common theme - Mail on SL. I have tried all of the 'fixes' (if applicable) within this thread. I deleted the 'messagealreadydownloaded3' file which had no positive effect. I can't immediately remove the messages from the server because I need to access remotely via iPhone and rebuilding the mailbox had no effect. It seems very simple to me now - The 'Mail' program is not accurately marking downloaded messages as already being downloaded. Apple needs to fix this issue fast or PC might be able to knock out Mac in the newest commercials.
Same problem here. I have only one POP account and two macs: a mini and a core duo iMac. The Mini upgraded to 10.6.1. I then found duplicate entries in my Mail inbox. I won't allow the iMac to upgrade to 10.6.1 since I haven't seen the problem there yet on 10.6. I've got other issues with 10.6.1 with Mail as well: http://discussions.apple.com/message.jspa?messageID=10300939#10300939
When I shutdown or restart my Mac Pro - it does an 'install' that takes nearly half an hour. When it finally boots up The emails I checked when the computer was last on are all there AGAIN.
I am guessing it is something that is 'stuck' from the last update as it is since the 'required restart' after that patch that this has happened.
Any help would be appreciated as this is not good with so many POP email addresses.
And? That's windows software. Which, unless someone is using macdrive from windows, that point is totally a moot one.
Totally a let-down when it comes to solutions. Maybe next time a solution that works on OS X itself? (wouldn't hurt, since, ya know, you're on the Apple site)
Thanks much! This fixed it for me. I had the repeating email problem after 10.6 upgrade.
However....shame on Apple! Wasted several hours resolving this. Not supposed to have these problems with Mac OS stuff, right?
Again, thanks for posting the fix.
