no tethering on officially unlocked iPhone

After removing the SIM-card, I see the "tethering" section (under the MMS section at Settings > General > Network > Cellular Data Network). I can enter some settings, but as soon as I enter the SIM-card the tethering section disappears. Obviously it has to do with the carrier, or the SIM-card, or whatever...

Yes! With the update to 3.1.3 i got tethering back up and working on my factory unlocked belgian iPhone 3GS. I'm on the mobile vikings network.
However it seems like you have to get rid of any remains of custom IPCC or mobile config to get it working.
I restored my phone a few weeks ago, did the update yesterday and it worked immediatly.

If there is one thing I learned from all this it's not to trust "updates" and wait at least some days before updating.

My phone is now on 3.1.3 and everything is at last working like it should so I will stick to that for as long as possible.

After more than half a year I finaly got what I paid for!

Same here. Provider is proximus.be (not the "official" Apple dealer which is Mobistar here in Belgium).
After a restore everything (tethering) is working again. At last !
Thanks to those who have listen to the customers complaints.
When I saw the iPad demo, I thought, no reason for me to buy this nice machine if the iPhone doesn't work as advertised. OK done, I now may consider buying an iPad !

Anyone a positive experiment with Mobistar since the latest OS update?

Finally Apple fixed the bug with 3.1.3. And by the way: Apple will sell the iPad without any carrier plan or contract - this is the way it should be from the beginning.

I use an officially unlocked iPhone 3G S from Italy in Germany. Jailbreaking was the only way to use tethering before update 3.1.3.

In Germany (after updating the firmware to 3.1.3) I used the Mobileconfig Email from BenAT and tethering works immediately with Vodafone, O2 and Eplus (3 german carriers). Only T-mobile still causes trouble, if you do not pay extra 20 € for tethering. But who needs t-mobile ? 😉

Thank you Apple. And thanks to everyone protesting against the firmware 3.1 wich limited the functionality which has been promised before.

Well, after waiting so long since Apple took away tethering. here it is again.
and yet i confirm that 3.1.3 is the best update ever.

below what is good:
1- it gives back tethering (for officially unlocked phones)
2- my iphone 3G is working faster (with applications or when changing settings)
3- battery life for 3G enhancement when using Wi-Fi (this what i've noticed)

Tethering is official and does not need any configuration files to be installed.

i'll be careful when future updates will come to make sure Apple will not take any options from me.

I agree it is the best update yet. Apart from the obvious tethering, it also is a rock-solid update and I am convinced my appalling battery life has improved.

Has anyone with a factory unlocked iPhone, with the latest 3.1.3 update, using AT&T in the states (phew!) had similar luck with tethering? I'm curious to know because I recently bought a factory unlocked 3GS and in the next week or so I'll buy a plan for it, most likely with AT&T because, well, it's the only GSM provider here with useable 3G service.
