iTunes 9 Not Recognizing iPod

So i just upgraded to iTunes 9... very interesting and different... cool setup

i attach my iPod (classic, 80gig), and it comes up as connected, and it shows up on my desktop, but it does not appear in iTunes... i can disconnect from the computer no problem, but i get nothing in iTunes... i've tried twice and i still have nothing...

Anyone else having similar problems/ know how to fix this?

My iPod 3rd Gen with the 4 buttons and touch wheel was not being recognized by my computer (System Profiler confirmed this when I plugged the iPod via firewire into my computer), so I could not sync to iTunes. (I confirmed that the firewire port was good.) When I plugged the old iPod in with the USB cable from my iPod Touch, it would recognize the iPod, but then the sync would abort with the message that battery power was exhausted, even though it had a full charge.

O.K., for all of you who have early iPods that are is not recognized by iTunes or your computer or both. Here is the workaround:

Buy a Y-cable for iPod that has the usual iPod or dock connector on one end, then a splitter from there into two cables: one for firewire and one for USB 2. Apple no longer makes/sells one of these cables, but they seem to be readily available online. I am in Mexico, and bought one at a WalMart!

So, turn off iTunes.
1) Plug the dock connector end of the Y cable into your iPod or dock.
2) Plug the firewire end of the Y cable into your power block and plug it into the wall
3) Plug the USB end of the Y cable into your computer
iTunes should start up automatically (if you have set it to do this), and the sync should progress normally. It was like magic!

I think that iTunes 9 must somehow be configured to work with USB, and not firewire. Using the y cable that allows you to connect to the computer with USB but plug your iPod into an external power source via firewire did the trick.

Hope this helps you frustrated folk out there!

Hopefully I can help...

1. Save ALL of the content you have in Itunes, on an external hard drive. Music, videos, photos, everything. You can drag and drop from Itunes itself to the hard drive.

2. Wipe the hard drive back to it's factory state. (Consult your manufacturer guide or support to do this.)

3. Install Itunes 8 (EIGHT), any version you can find. Google it. Download.com (Cnet) has a link to one.

4. Once you have that installed, drag and drop your files from the external hard drive to the Itunes menu.

5. Plug back in your Ipod. You MAY get an error message or Itunes will lock up. I'm going to guess that this is because Itunes 9 pretty much screwed up the Classic firmware. Don't quote me on that though.
This whole step is circumstantial, but if you wrestle enough with the format function and restore button with your Ipod, you can HOPEFULLY get it functional again. I had to use a relative's laptop to fix my Classic, but that was after I was fighting with the format and restore for a few minutes.

Caution: DO NOT UPDATE TO ITUNES 9. DO NOT UPDATE ITUNES *_AT ALL_* unless Apple EXPRESSLY informs us that the new update will either fix our Classics or not screw them up.

The whole hard-drive-wiping may seem a little extreme, but if you love your music as much as I love mine, then it's a small price to pay. I can't guarantee that this whole process will 100% fix your Ipod, but it's more help than you're going to get from Apple.

Good luck people.

All,
I have an Ipod 80Gb classic and hadnt connected it to my mac / ITunes for a good few months. I connected it and ITunes wouldnt pick it up, it would however show up on the desktop and mount correctly. I tried alot of things on this forum but nothing seemed to work.
I just want to share this with you incase you too have been bitten by ITunes Version 9.x
1) Remove ITunes completely from your MAC / PC. For MAC I used 'CleanApp' which ensures all components of an application are removed. But you could do it manually if you know where all the files are if any left behind.
2) Open up your IPod in 'Disk Utility' and delete the partition. Then re-verify and repair if prompted from the verify.
3) Remove the IPod from the MAC / PC and reboot the MAC / PC.
4) Download and Install ITunes 8.2 - you can download this anywhere, just google it. Then once installed, reboot.
5) Then connect your IPod, you will most likely get an error saying that your Ipod has been found but its been unable to communicate with it.
6) Install IPod Support Tools from the MAC OSX CD, reboot.

When the laptop comes back up, your IPod will have regained connectivity with ITunes and now has the correct associated Icon.

This still doesnt excuse Apple and the appauling job they have done testing ITunes 9.x before releasing. In addition the lack of support and response from anyone at Apple on acknowledging the fault, or indeed suggested fixes or patches.

Please do respond if this works for you, like i said i tried everything and this was the only thing that worked for me.

Good Luck all
ChrisW
