Update 3.1 Turned my iPhone into a Brick

I have the current Mac OS X 10.6 and iTunes 9.0, went to update my iPhone 3G to 3.1 and now my phone is useless. Tried all the tips on tech support with no luck. iPhone stays in recovery mode. I get error codes 2006, 1611, and 26 during different attempts to recover and restore.

Any suggestions?

The update bricked my iphone and restore is unresponsive. I attempted to reinstall an older version (8). Itunes 8 would install but not run. I uninstalled intunes 8 and redownloaded itunes 9 and the installer WOULD NOT RUN ON EITHER WINDOWS XP OR WINDOWS 7 on two different computers. I've also attempted to download older versions of itunes on different computers and the installers would not run on those either even after multiple restarts.

The problem seems it could be VIRUS RELATED since the issue seems to keep growing in terms of problems. The virus could be infecting the computer, preventing itunes from installing and messing up firmware updates / restores.

I tried all the above and nothing worked.

If you haven't worked it out yet, the solution to error 2002 failure to restore after going through all the steps suggested by Apple guide and various forums: i tried all of them, the only that worked for me was to find a Mac computer with an iTunes 9.0.1 installed and do the restore of my iPhone on there, which tookamazingly short time to do,and it upgraded my firmware to 3.1 as well, and then bring it back to my computer and carry on with the suncing to my latets update before the update to the 3.1 version firmware.

i hope it works for you

By the way I actually had this done in an Apple Store, and they did not charge me anything. There wasno special hocus pocus, the attendant plugged my iPhone into his Mac, started iTunes, and did a restor and within minutes (as opposed tothe hours it takes on my Windows XP system, the rstore was doen and the firmware update was complete

I tried to update my iPhone 3G to 3.1 on iTunes 9.0 (on Windows Vista). After about 15 minutes my phone flashed a few times, turned off & the unknown error box popped up (multiple error codes would come up). I tried to recover it about 25 times on several different computers & iTunes versions with no luck. The only thing that would come up on the screen was the iTues & USB cable icons.

At that point I was beyond irritation...

I walked in to the Apple store without an appointment. It took them a few minutes to see me, but the girl that helped me was very nice. She tried to recover it herself a few times with no luck, so she ended up replacing the phone with a brand new one. It was a painless experience getting it replaced, but what a flipping hassel! My phone can't just go dead on me like that! I hope Apple will be much more careful in the future before relasing updates that kill our phones!

I own 2x iPhone 3G's and I have upgraded both units to OS 3.1. (SUPER BIG MISTAKE)

The one phone I use for work (in that I am on it 24/7/365) and the WiFi has stopped working (dose not authenticate to AP - and yes I did re-flash AP)Battery Life BAD and has even switched off a few times (Hard reboot needed) - I did a Factory reset and re-flashed unit. And NO IT STILL AHH...

The 2nd phone my wife uses (in that it makes calls every now and again) the WiFi works, it has not rebooted itself and the Battery Life looks to be ok...

NOW WHAT THE F... IS GOING ON WITH THE SOFTWARE... NOTE: Both iPhone are 3G/16Gb units.

APPLE PLEASE REPLACE OS 3.1 GIVE US 3.X (BUGFIX-MAX) 😉

Twice in one month - Brand new iphone. I tried to upgrade to 3.1 and phone turned into a brick. Nice guy at the local ATT store admitted he had seen this before and gave me a new phone. Suggested I try to upgrade again after 9/21. Well, I tried it today with fear in my heart and sure enough - another brick. The guys at the ATT store were able to restore it for me. Still, I live in fear of ever upgrading the OS again. Of course they say - it must be your computer or a loose cable or something. Any chance Apple might admit that the software is a problem considering the number of posts here. Question - is a MAC necessary to use an Iphone? PC users with no ATT warranty beware!
