itunes 9 + windows xp x64-bit

I'm working on getting itunes 9 to run on Windows XP x64-bit. I managed to get the app running by a little luck. I initially followed the instructions here for itunes 8.x (http://yukichigai.googlepages.com/iphonex64) and it worked ok. I then went in to the 9 installer, lowered the minimum installer to 501 and installed. Boom. iPodService.exe fails. I have itunes 9 running, but only after I removed the service from the installer list. Naturally, I have an iphone and sure would like to get that to work again, but if the service fails, I'm not sure what to do. Anyone out there find a work around for the install that seems to work well?

If you follow these instructions to get iTunes 9 on XP x64, DO NOT attempt to upgrade your iPod Touch / iPhone OS to 3.1!! My install failed and left me with a non-working device. Downgrading back to 8.2.1 could not solve the problem. Good luck getting Apple Support help you with that one.

I just had to restore my new 3Gs on a different machine because of it 😟 . Fortunately I didn't have much data on it yet, but others may not be so lucky.

"After the reboot you may get an error when iTunesHelper launches, but that doesn't appear to hurt anything."

just disable the iTunesHelperService in Autostart with MSConfig , create an Shortcut from iTunesHelper.exe with compatibility Mode -> Windows 98 -> copy this Shortcut to to C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Programs\Startup this starts the iTunesHelperService without an error on Booting .

i think the new iPod OS 3.1 Update can not working with the old iPod Service

have anybody successfully testet a iphone with OS3.1 & iTunes 9 on WinXPx64 ?

Hello,

I am having problems I am doing everything as ggpedraza said but when I go to install AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi It starts installing and then it asks if If I want to continue anyway or stop installation and so I click continue anyway and then it goes for like 2 or 3 seconds and that screen comes up again so I click continue anyways again and then all it does is says rolling back actions and then tells me it couldn't install Apple Mobile Device Support 64 and it also does the same thing for the Itunes 64 installer. So I tried doing this same exact thing but only using itunes 8.21 which was the previous version and it installs fine doing what ggpedraza said the only thing different is that there is no AppleApplicationSupport.msi so I just used the one from itunes 9.0 and followed his directions exactly and it worked fine so I was wondering why it won't work with 9.0 but just fine with 8.21

Thanks,

Andrew

OK,

I've been happy with the fix for running iTunes 8 on my XP 64 bit system. I don't have a huge problem with Apple not supporting XP 64 except for the fact that the work around with iTunes 8 was so simple there seems no reason they couldn't release that as a solution. Anyway, two questions:

1) I tried the same technique with iTunes 9 and go the same response the rest of you did. I then followed ggpedraza's suggestion, which helped with the install, and iTunes 9 is working great EXCEPT for the fact it won't recognise my iPhone when I plug it in.

2) This is pretty frustrating - anyone know any solutions? Was thinking about rolling it back to iTunes 8 but the computer of course just tells me there's a later version installed. In order to roll back properly, if I uninstall 9 then reinstall with the iTunes 8 installer, will I still have my playlists etc, or will there be any side effects?

Hy!!!

I don't read the posts since a few days, so I don't know if someone have solved the problem of iPod Service. Finally I have iTunes 9 64bits running with an old iPod. How I did it?

1. I have installed iTune 9 x64 following the steps I wrote before, in my first post.

2. Then, I plugged my iPod and iTunes didn't recognize it. To make it work, I have installed iTunes 8 x64, modifying msi installer with Orca (just deleting LauncCondition's table and LaunchCondition's row on InstallUI...), without uninstall iTunes 9 x64. Before install iTunes 8 x64, I deleted iPod folder from Program Files (64 and 86), and the key of iPodService from windows's reg. I have done that only to be sure that no iPod service, file, ecc. from iTunes 9 x64 could interfere whit iTunes 9 installation.

3. After install iTunes 8 x64, just in case, I did a backup of iPod folder (on Program Files x86 folder) and of the reg key of iPod Service(HKLM/SYSTEM/CURRENTCONTROLSET/SERVICES/IpodService).

4. Finally I unistalled iTunes 8 x64 with Windows Install Clean Up (I think it's not necesary to unistall whit this tool, just unistall normally, from "Add or Remove Programs"). After unistall iTunes 8 x64, check that iPod folder and the iPodservice key still be on the HDD and on the windows's reg. If they were deleted by the unistall process, restore them from the backup of step 3.

5. As iTunes 9 x64 couln't be executed after unistall iTunes 8 x64 (maybe because an internal error.. to many installations), I executed the repair utility from the iTunes 9 x64 installer (in "Add or Remove Program>iTunes>Change>Repair). Anyway, I think this step isn't necesary. Only if iTunes 9 x64 can't open.

6. And finally, after repair, I launch iTunes 9 x64, and it recognized my old iPod. Now I can use it normally.

Great!!! All working.... I hope it works for everybody!

Please excuse my limited english.. again. Corrections are welcome!

Good luck!

Possible solutions for leah_2283:

1. Boot pressing F8 to acces to the Windows menu. There, select "Last Good Know Configuration, or something like that. Start Windows and check if everything works.

2. If not, restore Windows (Menu>Programs>Accesories>System tools>System restore). Look for a restore point previous of iTunes' installation, maybe a few days ago.

3. If not, unistall iTunes and all programs associated (Bonjour, Apple Mobile Device) whit Windows Install Clean Up, if they still stay in. Install and execute a reg cleaner, like CCleaner. Restart the computer after doing that, and check if everything works.

4. If not, or besides, press Windows key + R, and write "sfc /scannow". Execute and wait. You will need Windows Install CD. Restart again....

5. If not.... maybe you have to reinstall the OS. Bakcup your documents, photos, ecc. first!!!!

Opinions.... any else?

Good luck!!!

Thanks to everyone who has been posting solutions. Itunes 9 works fine now on my XP-64 and the Ipod service is running fine.

HOWEVER, I believe that the new Ipod 3.1 software does not work with the old Ipod service. I just tried plugging in my Ipod Touch and it windows tries to tell me that its a camera! Itunes does not recognize it and I've confirmed that the Ipod service is running.
