itunes 9 + windows xp x64-bit

I'm working on getting itunes 9 to run on Windows XP x64-bit. I managed to get the app running by a little luck. I initially followed the instructions here for itunes 8.x (http://yukichigai.googlepages.com/iphonex64) and it worked ok. I then went in to the 9 installer, lowered the minimum installer to 501 and installed. Boom. iPodService.exe fails. I have itunes 9 running, but only after I removed the service from the installer list. Naturally, I have an iphone and sure would like to get that to work again, but if the service fails, I'm not sure what to do. Anyone out there find a work around for the install that seems to work well?

I have the same problem as all of you, I am on Vista x64, iTunes 8.2 had no problem working with my 30000+ library.

THE FIX: REVERT TO 8.2 because 9 obviously is made to ** us off.

Here is how you can get back to a workable state:
-UNINSTALL iTunes 9
-Install iTunes 8.2: http://bit.ly/tDsGB
-When you start it, it will tell you your Library was made using a newer version. Ignore it and click OK.
-Start iTunes 8.2 (again) and HOLD the Shift key when loading and select your library from the "Previous Music Libraries" folder (it will be in your Music folder and is named the exact date you installed iTunes9)

Then your done, and you can actually listen to music.

Hope this helps someone!!!

I know this is kinda off topic...slap me with a trout if you like. I got iTunes 9 working on my XP-64 installation thanks to above instructions but could not get my new iPod to sync, so I installed XP so I can dual boot and installed iTunes 9 on that. How do I make it so they are operating off the same files (library files primarily)? That way I only have to boot XP to sync and can still edit my music while doing other work in XP-64.

Thanks for your comments ggpedraza.

I've just thought of a different approach though.
Often times I need to control my WinXP x64 machine from a x86 laptop.
This works great with HP Remote Graphics, including remote USB connections.
But 64-bit iTunes doesn't seem to want to recognize my iPhone 3G if I plug it into the laptop remotely, maybe because of the x86 and x64 driver conflict.

So has anyone tried installing 32-bit iTunes on WinXP x64?
I suspect all that needs to be done is to modify the launch condition to accept WinXP x64 to allow the installation to proceed?
Can anyone predict any other issues or problems with this approach?

Thanks for any feedback!

Ok, tried several things:

1. 32-bit iTunes installation did not work. AppleMobileDeviceSupport fails to install. Towards the end it says there was an error and could not complete. Did not say what failed, so not sure where things went wrong.

2. So giving up on 32-bit iTunes, I went onto the 64-bit installation using the method described by ggpedraza. Installation went very smoothly - no errors at all. Upon starting iTunes, I get an iPodService Module (64-bit) problem (needs to close). Not sure if it is the same as what everyone else is seeing because it does not crash iTunes. Trying to repair the installation with the original iTunes64Setup.exe does not fix it.

3. Tried rebooting, and get a problem with iTunesHelper needing to close.

Have not tried plugging in my iPhone yet...hoping to fix these problems first. Ideas?

Hi!

To fix iPodServices' problem, follow the steps explained on a previous post (14 sept). It worked for me.

To fix the iTunesHelper's problem, try to disable it from the startup's programs. You can do it from msconfig or from a program like Tuneup, Spybot... I didn't have problemns with this service so I don't know if this solution could work. I think so and I hope so too. In fact is not a service, like iPodService; is an start app not necesary to run iTunes(advised but optional anyway). The problem could be when iTunes call this app to be launched. So if iTunes doesnt't do it, because you have disabled it.... try it.

I have other idea in case that this one fails. But try that first! It's a "softly" solution.

Good luck!

Thanks again for the input ggpedraza.

Yes, I should be able to avoid the iTunesHelper error by removing it from startup with msconfig. iTunes seems to run fine even if iTunesHelper is not running. Wanted to get it running though if it was possible. Trying to run it in Win98 compatibility mode did not work.

As for iPodService, I will review the instructions for that and give it a try.
But since I only have an iPhone (with no plans to get an iPod), maybe I will just live with this error as long as the iPhone syncing works.

I got Itunes 9 and my Iphone working on my XP 64 using Ggpedraza's method described in his post 11, but only steps 1-5. After that, I didn't immediately open Itunes, but first did the following (which are posted on

Plug in your iPhone, then do the following (from http://yukichigai.googlepages.com/iphonex64)

*Plug in the Iphone

* Open System Properties (in the Control Panel, or right-click "My Computer" and select "Properties"), then go to the Hardware tab and click the "Device Manager" button.
* Scroll down the list until you reach "Universal Serial Bus controllers". Double-click it to expand it, then look for "Apple iPhone" in the list. If it's there you can skip the rest of this. If not, go to the next step in this list.
* Next find the section "Imaging Devices". Double-click it to expand it, then right-click the "Apple iPhone" entry and go to "Properties".
* Go to the Driver tab and click the "Update Driver" button
* When the Hardware Update Wizard opens up, it may ask if you want to connect to Windows Update. select "No, not this time" and hit Next.
* On the next screen, select "Install for a list or specific location" and click Next.
* On the next screen, select "Don't search..." (blah blah blah) and hit Next.
* The next screen should show you two entries, "Digital Still Camera" and "Apple Mobile Device USB Driver". (or similar) Select "Apple Mobile Device USB Driver" and click Next.
* After a while you will be presented with that same "this driver might make your face melt off" warning screen from earlier. Click "Continue Anyway". (Though if you do I can't guarantee that your face won't melt off)
* When the install process finally completes hit Finish, then close out all the windows you've opened.

That worked seamlessly (without having to go into the registery.

First, I would say that if anyone has gotten this to work with a newer iphone or ipod touch, I would like to hear a short explanation of what you did.

I've spent pretty much the past four hours working on this with little luck. Here's what I've done so far. I downloaded the x64 version of itunes 9, but that didn't work the way it had for 8 (for the reasons said) so I tried the normal installer and was able to get it installed fine. However, i recently bought a new 3g ipod touch and I couldn't get it to recognize when I plugged it in. It came in as a camera (like Mark M). I realized that it was a drivers problem, but had some trouble getting the driver to install. In version 8.2, I can just go update the driver and switch it over to ipod touch the way that is explained in yukichigai (and by Kolshack). I didn't realize I could try this until have I uninstalled the normal itunes 9 to try what was done here and have not been able to get the normal itunes 9 to work as well as what I did the first time. When I ran diagnostics, the only error was that it wasn't getting the driver, but everything else was green, after uninstalling everything and reinstalling I couldn't get the mobile support to work (like chickkun). I think this was b/c I originally had left over the mobile support from 8.2 which was working.

Okay, so I tried what was recommended first by ggpredraza and I couldn't get my ipod touch working and then I tried the .rar that he posted and that didn't work (it wouldn't change the registry for 1 and the second one didn't do anything, so I gave up). Basically I could get itunes 9 to work, but I wasn't able to get the ipod touch to work. And since I just bought it, that is my focus right now. I reinstalled itunes 8.2, obviously the new ipod touch doesn't work in it. I will try BKnight's solution tomorrow (seems like the same solution that is posted by Guille in the comments on http://itunes-for-xp-64-bit.com/).

Has anyone tried this solution on a new ipod touch or iphone?
