itunes 9 + windows xp x64-bit

I'm working on getting itunes 9 to run on Windows XP x64-bit. I managed to get the app running by a little luck. I initially followed the instructions here for itunes 8.x (http://yukichigai.googlepages.com/iphonex64) and it worked ok. I then went in to the 9 installer, lowered the minimum installer to 501 and installed. Boom. iPodService.exe fails. I have itunes 9 running, but only after I removed the service from the installer list. Naturally, I have an iphone and sure would like to get that to work again, but if the service fails, I'm not sure what to do. Anyone out there find a work around for the install that seems to work well?

From what I saw in the forum, to an iPhone or iPod Touch, you just need to modify the installer and then install the three packages mentioned in one of my post. The problem with the iPodService is only for older iPods.
To my knowledge, the new models are synchronized via AppleMobileDeviceSupport64.msi.

You can try to reinstall all, uninstalling your iTunes before, with Windows Install Clean Up or Revo Unistaller (this one makes a deep clean of folders and registry). After uninstalling, reboot, check that no folder still be on your HDD and start from 0 with the modified package.

If you have tried with the file that I have uploaded and it didn't work, I'll take it off to avoid problems to other people.

I hope you can fix it.

Good luck.

Thanks to those who have posted (and to those replying directly to me). All the comments are a big help.

I uninstalled everything and did the registry cleaner. Then I followed the normal instructions (adjust the installer files, do it in order, etc). I also then followed the instructions from Kolshack (previously this did not work for me, but after cleaning the registry it did*) to get the iPod to be recognized. However, the ipod services still wasn't working, even after repairing from the original installer. This meant that the ipod would just try to connect to the apple store. I tried restarting the apple mobile support, but this does not work. My older ipod nano would not connect, so I tried the BKnight solution after creating a system restore point, 🙂 and restarted. After restarting, both my old ipod nano and my new ipod touch worked perfectly. I suspect that I may have just needed to restart rather than use BKnights solution (for the new ipod touch, still would have needed it for nano), but rather than test to make sure from my older restore, I will just cross my fingers and thank god that it is working now.

Again, thanks to those who have commented on here, you have made my day.

This is a new ipod touch (running 3.1.1) and it works perfectly on my computer now.

*Another possibility is that when I went to work today I installed the 32 bit version of itunes on my work computer and set up the ipod touch on that (and transferred some music). It could be that after actually setting it up, the computer was more willing to install the right driver, or it could just have been the registry cleanup and a better install. No way to be sure, but thought I would mention it if anyone else had any issues.

I'm getting the same error, regardless of whether I try the 64-bit or 32-bit installer - the iPodService module fails to start after the install finishes, regardless of whether my iPod is plugged in.

I've tried everything in this thread, uninstalled EVERYTHING Apple-related from my computer before reinstalling, and still nothing.

I'm beyond irritated at this point. And then when I try and request support, Apple tells me I'm outside my warranty and will have to pay if I want their help. Look, I used to work in IT, I'm not requesting support because I can't figure out what buttons to press - I'm requesting support because something is causing your product to fail for multiple people, including me.
</rant>

Anyways... if anyone has any other suggestions, I'm at a dead end. It doesn't seem to be isolated to the 64-bit installer either, at least not for me.

Fixed -

I changed the launch conditions to 501 in each of the modules and went to install.
The installation progressed smoothly until the end where I got the ipodservices module error you all were getting.
I had already downloaded (itunes site defaulted to) the 32bit installation, so with the dialog open I extracted the itunes.msi file to a folder
copied the folder "ipod" from the sourcedir subfolder and replaced it (after backing up my programfiles(x86)/ipod folder) over the existing "ipod" folder and hit retry.

The installation finished clean, and after running through the steps described earlier to correct the driver problem for iphone, it recognized, sync'd and started backing up the iphone. I am getting ready to update the software now, and will let you know how it goes.
