After iTunes 9 upgrade iPod Classic is corrupt without ability to restore

I am upset right now, so this will seem a bit harsh. I do not really care if this has been posted, it needs to be said again.

I upgraded my Windows Vista x64 PC to iTunes 9 today and attempted to sync my iPod Classic 80GB to iTunes. It failed and it became apparent after doing some searching online that the hard drive was corrupt. After connecting my iPod to the PC again, iTunes told me that the iPod was corrupted need to be restored. After downloading the update and extracting it, the iPod restore process begins and then fails.

I've tried to restore my iPod on Mac and Windows, and I've tried all the recommendations from Apple regarding the error that I get, something about the restore failed due to an unknown error 1439. Thanks Apple for unknown errors.

This is a relatively good condition iPod that is slightly out of warranty and I need to know what I can do to get it repaired. It worked just fine this afternoon and I've never had a problem with it, ever. I know it's a functional iPod I just need a restore but it won't work for me.

Will the Apple Store nearest me help me with this, or will they tell me to take off b/c it's out of warranty????

Questions needing answers.

Thanks for any and all help.

Okay, my 80 gig ipod is still working goood since I had to reformat it through windows. I have had no problems downloading or syncing now but I have not reinstalled 9.0. I am using Itunes 8 and they won't let me rent movies without upgrading. But I can buy music and download with no problems yet. So I'm gonna cross my fingers and hope all is well. I went three weeks without my ipod because of their upgade.

I'm just sort of stunned at Apple's seemingly flippant attitude towards all of us. I've heard, in this thread, of customers being told to buy a new iPod, and even a new machine. This is completely unacceptable, and frankly very unusual for Apple. They're typically right on top of these kinds of problems, and actually care enough to even reply on to the threads on this forum.

I'm ready for us all to call customer "care" and demand that they login and read these posts while we're on the phone. C'mon! Who's comin' with me....

This is the first time I'm posting in these forums but I have to get on board even if just to add a number to the amount of people experiencing the iPod Paperweight...I updated my iTunes to version 9.0 and I hated it, but it didn't affect my iPod (5th gen 80GB model). I updated further to 9.0.1, plugged in my iPod and like everyone else, I got an error message and had to do a factory restore. Fine, I've done it before and everything went OK. Not this time however. It failed to sync my music in its entirety and didn't sync any video at all. The "other" bar in my summary had hit 14GB and that made no sense to me. At one point I was able to get all of my music synced but the video still wouldn't load. When I quit iTunes and restarted my machine, the iPod lost about 1/3 of the music. I trashed everything iTunes on my computer, reinstalled iTunes 8, and manually rebuilt my library (not using imported lists), and still no dice. Several attempts to do a restore didn't help either and all I've been able to accomplish is syncing a few playlists and a couple of videos, with another 70GB of the 74+ available sitting there wasted and unused.

Luckily and coincidentally, my wife got me the new 160GB model for my birthday, which of course forced me to upgrade to iTunes 9, but it synced 82GB worth of music and 30GB of videos last night with no problem. I gave my 80GB to my wife and she's going to attempt to sync her library on her work computer, which never went beyond iTunes 8. I hope it works for her but I'm not holding my breath.

What baffles me is that this is really the only place I'm even seeing people with the same types of problems I'm having, I would think this would be more rampant on other forums as well since it seems to have affected a lot of people. I saw someone mention a few pages back a class action suit against Apple...you know, I'm totally on board with that if we don't get any answers from Apple. As many of you had said, "go buy another one" is not a solution.

FOLLOW UP: My wife plugged the "corrupt" iPod into her work computer running iTunes 8 and she said everything synced on the first attempt with no error messages at all. Whether or not that sticks is left to be seen, but so far that's a lot more than I expected. I know some of you have tried syncing to another computer but for Mac users, I suggest trying you at least give it a try. Good luck!

I, as well as many others, have had the same problem since updating both of my ipod classics. I've tried the 5 R's to no avail. I've completely uninstalled Itunes an installed the version that came with my first ipod(which is more than 3yrs old). The only amusing thing about this situation, and I use the term amusing very lightly, is that a few months ago I thought about the fact that my ipod is almost 4yrs old and "battle tested". I jokingly thought to myself, "Apple built these Ipods too well. It wouldn't surprise me if their next update screwed up my Ipods... forcing me to buy new ones." I think that I jinxed us all. I'm sorry. I've read many posts describing how people called Apple's representatives to rectify this problem, were told that there's nothing that Apple/ Itunes can do and were advised to buy new Ipods. I have good news. I synced my ipod. I got the corrupt message after about 7GB of my music was loaded. I synced again. This added about another 15GB of my music before I got the corrupt message. I kept syncing until all of my music was loaded. Now, this was a time consuming pain in the butt because i have about 50GB of music, but it's better than having no music or forking over money for a new Ipod.

Im really astonished at how apple is handeling this problem...i have tried every tip in this discussion to try and restart my ipod and ive looked at other discussions to try and fix it...I have wanted a macbook for some time now and have been saving to purchase one...if this is how apple is treating their customers and blowing off problems that people cant always afford to fix then they just lost a customer.

hey sasscareskids, the reason the nano will sync and the classic will not is because apple has given up on the classic. They have shifted completely away to the touch and nano because of their high market share, leaving us classic users in the dust. I too (responding to a user who i can't remember)was also saving up to buy a macbook or macbook pro but this has really changed my opinion about apple's customer support, so i dunno at this point. In response to the people who were syncing with itunes 8, i don't exactly know how it worked for you because at least for me the ipod couldn't get recognized.

Whaoooo wolfioligy101!!!

First of all after 11 posts, I don't think that's quite an appropriate resposne... Again as a iPod classic user I've not had some of the issues posted here.

Granted there may be an issue, but again can I ask how many of you have called apple to actually report this issue? As some apple employees may moderate this or review this but it's not a way to submit issues to apple.

Apple support comes from calling thier 800 number and reporting the issues, or writing to them. Until enough call them they have no way to know this. From watching this post I see that some of you have called and identified an issue. Additionally, I see that alot of folks are bypassing iTunes to get the data on the disk. Again placing the iPod into disk mode and running windows checks does not compinsate for the level of tools that the iPod uses.

I'm not trying to compensate for your issues here, but expressing that instead of bashing and stating that apple is leaving the classic behind (which they are not) you need to call.

Apple from a few years ago stated that the iPod classic will be around util nand memory technology (the solid state memory used in the nano's and touches) can meet the level of storage space on the classic.

This year we got a step closer by getting a 64GB touch, but again the HDD space on the classic was equally bosted by a good 40GB. Granted the classic may be retired but they understand that there are some audiophillie's that want thier entire library around. And until they can make sure that this need is met, I'm sure they are going to help us with the classic.

Also the other thing to note here is that apple offers thier apple care for a reason. If purchased on the classic for a small fee you are protected for a full 2 years!

Therefore if cases like this occur, you don't need to worry about losing out on money. Granted those that are older can not meet this warranty package are indeed out but that is another altnerative to getting a brick.

At this point, I can only stress that folks call apple and report the issue to the care representatives.... If thier is indeed a problem they will compensate you... Look at what happened when they dropped the cost of the iPhone... People complained loud enough and apple did make it right for previous owners...

Therefore if you all do the same, they may realize this... And either fix it or offer you some sort of resolution in the long run if folks are having this.... But complaining to this thread alone will not do that... You MUST CALL!!

Additionally as mentioned in another thread, who knows if PALM and thier PRE cracking problems into iTunes and using Apples iPod classic USB ID is not causing to the problems that you guys are having in iTunes 9.... They may be the cause because of the illegal stuff they are doing... I don't know how apple is blocking the PRE devices which are indeed mimicing the iPod hardware, but if that can be it than that could be causing all of your problems with the older classic styles... Thus the new 160 which needs iTunes 9 may not be effected (at the moment).

** again PLEASE call apple!

Look man, the number of posts a person has does not negate their right to share their experience or problems with their iPod on an iPod forum. And frankly, your 87 or whatever posts are not that much more than his 11. It seems sort of rude to mock him or her based on something like that, especially if your intention, ostensibly, is to be helpful.

I have called Apple. I was polite, articulate, and thorough, and I received a "hmm, I haven't really heard any one else having this type of trouble sir. Is your iPod still under Apple Care?"

This is nonsense. I purchased Apple Care, as I do for all Apple products. I'm a competent user, and when I upgraded to iTunes 9 and 9.0.1, my 80g Classic bit the dust. It was not user error, and I did not run to the forums cursing and screaming at Apple. I exhausted ALL options for a home fix, then I reported the problem through the feedback system, and I called, as you suggested. I understand some people probably exacerbated their troubles by unplugging early etc., but for the most part, everyone seems to be relatively competent, and simply having a legitimate issue with Apple's new software. The bottom line is that even if only 10 of us suffered a fried iPod due to an Apple-mandated upgrade, it would still be unacceptable.

In view of the fact that it's mentioned so frequently on here, and there are assuredly more users dealing with this than are posting on this forum, it seems only decent that Apple could dignify us with some sort of public acknowledgement of the problem. I agree we should be civil, and should be absolutely certain that we have a legit problem before posting all caps rants, but we should also be listened to and assisted. So, use the appropriate avenues to voice your problems, and do not stop voicing them until Apple takes some decisive action.

Again guys, please try to reformatt your ipods through windows or mac. But first ininstall itunes completely and it files ( all of them ) and reinstall itunes 8. Plug in your ipod and when windows or mac recocognizes it, right click on my ipod and click on the option to reformat. It took at least 30 minutes to finish but now my 80m gig works good after a long time of being without one.

Oct 9, 2009 8:50 AM in response to mooksmom

Wait, how do you do this reformatting thing? Do you go to My Computer, right click on the ipod, and then what? I have the option to "format it" but not "reformat". Then when I click on the type of formatting it gives me a warning that says something along the lines of "are you sure you want to do this?" but when I say yes, nothing happens. I'm using XP by the way.
