After iTunes 9 upgrade iPod Classic is corrupt without ability to restore

I am upset right now, so this will seem a bit harsh. I do not really care if this has been posted, it needs to be said again.

I upgraded my Windows Vista x64 PC to iTunes 9 today and attempted to sync my iPod Classic 80GB to iTunes. It failed and it became apparent after doing some searching online that the hard drive was corrupt. After connecting my iPod to the PC again, iTunes told me that the iPod was corrupted need to be restored. After downloading the update and extracting it, the iPod restore process begins and then fails.

I've tried to restore my iPod on Mac and Windows, and I've tried all the recommendations from Apple regarding the error that I get, something about the restore failed due to an unknown error 1439. Thanks Apple for unknown errors.

This is a relatively good condition iPod that is slightly out of warranty and I need to know what I can do to get it repaired. It worked just fine this afternoon and I've never had a problem with it, ever. I know it's a functional iPod I just need a restore but it won't work for me.

Will the Apple Store nearest me help me with this, or will they tell me to take off b/c it's out of warranty????

Questions needing answers.

Thanks for any and all help.

Well, yes it is through windows but I don't know if Vista would be any diffent than xp. Did you give the computer enough time to think before you closed the window to format? Sometimes it takes a while before it starts doing what you told it to do. But like I said before, it will take almost half an hour to reformat your ipod.

inexxfear, i am perfectly fine with you debating my points, but i would like to correct you in a few areas. first, i have contacted apple's support line on several occasions, but they deny the fact that this is a chronic problem, even when telling them to see this thread. The reason why i'm definitely angered is that i expect when i give apple a good 250 dollars, they fix any problems that come up with it, ESPECIALLY if so many people are having this kind of problem. Seeing you don't have this problem yourself, you don't exactly understand how frustrating having an empty ipod that can't be synced, and then see a laundry list of people who have the same problem. I think apple should step up and fix it. Don't you? to kbon, go to divice manager under computer management in control panel, then right click on the device and say format. I can't say it worked for me but give everything a try. let me know if it worked out.

I called customer service and they are still pleading ignorance. This is such an obvious case of enforced obsolescence to cut loose a product line. My $250 80 gb lasted exactly 1 year and 4 months. My old one died because I wore it out. This one died because they killed it! I hope really bad things happen to this company. If they continue to ignore it, I will be calling a lawyer.

I'd just like to add my experience to this method. I uninstalled 9 and went back to 8, then wiped my iPod completely and reformatted. It did work long enough to get about a quarter of my songs back on it safely. I ejected and took my iPod somewhere with me, then got home and plugged it back in, hoping to finish synching the rest, and it locked right back up.

So, while it may work for some, it's not a definite fix. I'm not using Windows, and I would encourage anyone to try it just in case, but be sure you've tested your iPod several times before coming back and posting here that it's fixed. It could appear to be at first, only to hit you with a low blow and lock back up after a few more tries. I hope not, but it did happen to me that way. We thought it was fixed then... death.

Mine is working again!

* I connected the ipod without starting iTunes 9;
* Formatted the hard drive - which took a very long time (couple of hours);
* Started iTunes and plugged it in, it recognised the iPod as one 'in restore mode' and restored it;
* Did a sync of all music; started out well;
* It hung and crashed iTunes twice. I noticed it was on a particular song. When trying to play it iTunes freezed and crashed the computer once more. So there we had our culprit. I deleted the track and then without doing anything else tried again and then all the music went nicely onto the iPod;
* Holding my breath, I changed a few selections and made new playlists and synced once more, to my pleasant surprise, it did just fine.
* I also went trough the service menu as mentioned in an earlier post. The iPod showed no errors (like pending files) at all! My old white iPod on the other hand showed quite some problems, even though it works okay with iTunes 9 (if only for a few hours untill the battery is empty).
* I did not reinstall iTunes since the last dramatic crash, still is 9.0.1

Still some thoughts:
* A salesperson in an Apple store dismissing my problems as a hard drive failure ergo not to be resolved except for buying a new one is unacceptable. That kind of ignorance is not worthy of any computer brand;
* Even though my problem at one point had to do with apparently one corrupted file, iTunes 9 still has something fishy. How did that file get corrupted? How can it take down the whole computer and the iPod? How come all of a sudden the authorisations for playing my friends music has to be re-entered time and again?
* So many of us having exactly the same kind of problem should be an alert for Apple and they should do something. We shouldn't be left in the cold like that, even when our warranty has ended.
* I'm glad my iPod works again and I still find the iPod and especially iTunes the best media playing combo, but I have lost my respect for Apple as a company that deliveres better quality than the Microsoft line of computers and devices. The mystic aura has vanished.

Anyways I hope all of you will find a solution and can get back to the main reason for being here: enjoying music!

Not only "ESPECIALLY if so many people are having this kind of problem", but so many people having this kind of problem because of their software. I mean, if someone calls Apple and says "Hey, I went deep sea scubadiving last week, and now my iPod won't work (or dry off). Fix it." or "Hey, me and my friends ran out of pucks while playing hockey, so we decided to use my iPod instead. Fix it."

This is a problem caused by their upgrade - not user error (or ignorance, as the case may be). 😉

well, when I right click on the ipod it just says "format...". Does yours say "reformat"? Also, when I click on format, and then click start, it says "WARNING: Formatting will erase all data...blah blah" so, I hit start and then nothing happens. The computer doesnt sound busy or anything and the bar at the bottom is not filling up at all.

Out of curiosity, what virus scanners are folks using? Could this be playing a factor into the corruption on the device?

I have seen in the past where some virus scanners are checking disks of devices when the iPod is connected to a PC. If iTunes is writing, and a virus scanner is doing its thing to the disk at the same time, you could be artificially causing part of the issue, and this may be something with the 9.0 that could be causing the iPod to react differently, or sync slowly!

Those having issues, have any of you swapped things like this out here to see if a particular virus scanning application could be causing the issue? As this seems to be related to PC based devices, where most MAC users run without any utilities like this and I haven't seen any MAC users posting issues yet...

I was out on the KB trying to help you guys (as I run PC and MAC software and support both daily)... Additionally KB articles:

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1369
http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1493

Helped me come to this idea... Additionally if anyone is having issues with thier iPod, are you trying to do restores and sync with the iPod connected directly to your PC's USB port... Try to exclude any USB hubs for the time being to see if that helps as well!

Hi, I have an ipod Classic, 120 gig, which isn't 12 months old. I have recently upgraded both my PC and Mac OS X to I tunes v 9.0.1, and I have the trouble you all seem to be having. The ipod screen comes up with the spinning circle, with the two arrows, that says "connecting", this goes on indefinitely, my computer now never recognises the I pod through itunes, only as a portable storage device. In fact, if I connect my ipod, and open ipod on both machines, i tunes never opens, the moment the ipod is disconnected, itunes immediately opens. There is a serious bug in I tunes 9.0.1, which until is resolved, is going to leave some very annoyed I pod users

Fourth eye, have you tried resetting your iPod before connecting the device...

I have a 5th Generation (iPod video) that if I try to sync it to a Windows Vista based device without doing that the two items react interestingly... However if I reset the iPod to clear it out, and then try to sync iTunes and the iPod communicate perfectly and no issues...

However, on that PC I think there may be other annomolies which add to this confusion but I can get it to sync on the good side.

@kbon: you have to wait a really long time before you see the bar changing. It took about ten minutes before the first green part of thre progress bar appeared. It took several hours before the drive was formatted.
No virusscanner here. (I know, but I subscribed to a scanner for 3 years en never, ever a virus was found - the programs I use are protective by themselves). USB-hub those in the brand new laptop.

yeh kbon, hendrake is totally right, it takes forever to even get the first green bar, try putting it on overnight and see what happens. i think Inexfear is right on the fact that anyone who is really ticked should send apple a letter here

while i love expressing my anger at apple on a discussion board as much as the next guy, there really is no fix that we have come up with yet. We really need apple to fix it, so try and alert them any way you can. call, email, apple store, i mean they arent listening to us here, but if enough people are hollering about this they have to get that this problem exists, right?

Oct 11, 2009 6:11 AM in response to Kbon

In this discussion thread, I have come across a suggestion that if you are prepared to reformat, and you seem to be, that you go to the settings window even in iTunes, set the POD as an extra HD and do the reformatting. Since I gave up on Win a while back and run the POD from my MAC, and since my menus are in the Italian language, I can only repeat that my "ripristina" is probably your reformat, restore or something like that. In any case, the apple support pages, apple.com, for "how to" problems is quite good and they'll tell you how to format a pod when you select the right model and OS.
I'm not ready to stick pins in wax models of Steve Jobbs, since Apple's third-party allies worked with Apple to solve a Snow-Leopard caused problem (reported in another thread)and restored my Apple-freakerie.

I'm not very bright with all this sort of thing. I have 2 older shuffles which have the same problems. I've tried all the recommended 'fixes' which have fixed nothing. I still have playlists on them, which now cut out and skip. They wont sync, be recognized by iTunes, or when they are recognized it comes up with the 'corrupt' message. I will try the reformatting if thats even possible with the shuffles. I only want music for when I'm out at parties, riding my bike or horse, nothing fancy and I dont think I'll bother with Apple MP3 players any more. Too much hassle.
