After iTunes 9 upgrade iPod Classic is corrupt without ability to restore

I am upset right now, so this will seem a bit harsh. I do not really care if this has been posted, it needs to be said again.

I upgraded my Windows Vista x64 PC to iTunes 9 today and attempted to sync my iPod Classic 80GB to iTunes. It failed and it became apparent after doing some searching online that the hard drive was corrupt. After connecting my iPod to the PC again, iTunes told me that the iPod was corrupted need to be restored. After downloading the update and extracting it, the iPod restore process begins and then fails.

I've tried to restore my iPod on Mac and Windows, and I've tried all the recommendations from Apple regarding the error that I get, something about the restore failed due to an unknown error 1439. Thanks Apple for unknown errors.

This is a relatively good condition iPod that is slightly out of warranty and I need to know what I can do to get it repaired. It worked just fine this afternoon and I've never had a problem with it, ever. I know it's a functional iPod I just need a restore but it won't work for me.

Will the Apple Store nearest me help me with this, or will they tell me to take off b/c it's out of warranty????

Questions needing answers.

Thanks for any and all help.

-Matt

I've had the same problem mentioned as the people here. This is an issue that occurred immediately after upgrading to iTunes 7.0, and it is very obvious to me that it's the upgrade that caused this, not a mechanical failure with the iPod. Since there is no workaround I am aware of, what I'd suggest people do is submit a bug report to Apple so they become aware of the scope of the problem and so they can fix this. I know we all like to ***** on forums, but, let's face it, it's not all that productive.

That's why you should really email apple support at the link i put in a few posts ago, i feel that if apple is worth giving money too, they should listen to their costumers and fix this problem. does anyone here know an mp3/video player that's really comparable to the ipod? I'm thinking i want to switch, but I feel like there aren't many players that are as good with as many peripherals as the ipod. Any thoughts?

This is ridiculous! I too, have lost everything on my iPod classic. It happened about a month ago...I immediately came to this forum when it occurred but didn't leave a post because it was redundant. I was waiting to see what Apple's response was going to be. Well, we know what that is don't we? A big ZERO! It is INCREDULOUS that they continue to ignore this problem. I unfortunately, lost over 7K plus songs. Even more unfortunate is the fact that 3k plus songs were not on my computer because I had a hard drive crash a while ago that wiped out my entire iTunes library that was not on a back-up disk (how that happened is irrelevant)and I could not find a way to "upload" them back onto my computer. I am not really that tech savy. OK, I digress. Anyway, Somewhere back in the initial postings here someone mentioned something about a "Class-Action" lawsuit. I think this is exactly the kind of thing that might get their attention. It is unconscionable that they are ignoring this problem (i find it hard to believe that they are not aware of this). Do they expect us to either go buy a new product or "just fade away" and deal with our loss? My iPod Classic was third generation I believe so no warranty available. And, further, what is the deal with not being able to speak or even e-mail Apple unless you purchase this right for $100 plus dollars (after expiration of warranty)??? Anyway, sorry, I rambling. I'm so MAD. Apple, hope your listening.

Guys, have you tried reformatting your ipod? I have an ipod classic and it went through the same things you describe. Erased everything, would'nt sync and requested that I restore it everytime I plugged it in. I did that at least 20 times. I finally uninstalled itunes 9.0 completely (files and anything associated with itunes). I then reinstalled itunes 8. When I plugged in my ipod, windows finally recognized it. I right clicked on my ipod and then clicked on format. This took a good part of 30 minutes but now it works fine. I did have my songs on cds so I was able to download them again. And I have all my info back. It works like it did before I upgraded to itunes 9. There was no way I was going to buy a new ipod when my old one was working great. Hope this helps.

This has been suggested and discussed more than once in this thread. In my case, it only worked for about a day, then my iPod locked right up again. Further, I've reformatted mine so many times, I can no longer even seem to do it. I keep getting errors saying unable to format. No work around seems to correct that either, but we shouldn't have to keep going through all these steps anyway. Again, this has all been said previously in this thread.

I have the same exact problem =S

I get the error msg (-48), (-13010), or (-50)...among others saying the disk cannot be read from or written to.

I have tried the 5Rs, disk check, and other suggestions that I have googled. After seeing how many other people are having this problem, I made an appointment with the genius bar at the local apple store. Luckily, my warranty is good until Christmas.

Hopefully they can fix this problem or replace it!

Are you wanting to downgrade iTunes? If so, just go to the "Downloads" option above and search for iTunes 8... I think it's still one of the highest download options in this section.

If you want to downgrade your music library (which iTunes 9 modified after install), you shoudl be able to find the assoicated XML files in the "Previous Libraries" folder with the assoicated date that it was updated.

You would just need to take that file out and place it into the main iTunes folder and you will be reverted back before iTunes did anything to the file... It's an automatic save features embedded into the apple process.

Advise if this is what you are looking for or not....

Same problem here. Upon installing iTunes 9 my iPod Classic 80 GB just won't restore anymore (getting a 1429 error). Right now, I'm uninstalling iTunes 9 and will downgrade it to version 8, format my iPod and try restoring it with that. If that won't work, I'm gonna try some things in Linux, as my main OS is Ubuntu (running WinXP in a virtual machine though)..

I don't believe it's got anything to do with broken HDs, as any check I do, it basically tells me the HD is fine, no corrupt sectors or anything..

I have been checking back on this forum since my iPod has fried itself after the iTunes 9 update hoping for an answer to this problem and have found nothing yet. I have tried countless restores, reinstalled iTunes twice, downloaded iTunes 8 only to have a Quicktime error, made an appointment at the Genius bar at the Apple store in Greensboro where they restored it with a Mac and told me to go home and try it, where it did not work, and now worst of all when a solution finally seems to be made available, my iPod will not reformat. After waiting for 20 minutes or so on the "Formatting Removable Device" screen, it will pop up with an error message saying something along the lines of "unable to format device". I am using Windows Vista and have now finally downloaded iTunes 9 again, so if anyone has any kind of solution they can help me with I would appreciate it.
