Itunes won't open after Installing 9 update

no offense or anything but this thread is for users running macs....not windows....it can be very confusing when trying to solve mac problems, to see replies from windows users!

My sincere apologies to Mac users. Please help me out with the url of the Apple iTunes Forum that deals with Vista 64, and / or Win 7.

I had the same problem but after downloading the latest Safari I was able to open iTunes. I suggest you to download the latest Safari and try again. good luck!

please help! i am having the same issue. i have 10.4.11. i downloaded the new itunes, but it will not install - the message is that 10.5 or higher is required to install. yikes.

Yes, this is happening to many people. ITunes 9 requires system 10.4.11. What ticks me off the most is that Software Update suggested I download version 9 of ITunes, knowing I did not have the proper system to support it (10.4.10). Apple dropped the ball on this one. It needs further testing. Also, Safari, version 4 is required, but my wife's computer is running it fine with version 3.2.1. What's up with that? Do I convert to an earlier version of ITunes, or update my system? Which is safer?

Ive downloaded the latest version of Safari - and have been using it for quite a while - and since the i tunes 9 update - it wont allow me to access the store....i tunes tells me to open software update - but there is nothing for me to update....oh itunes - what have you done!!

I'm on OSX 10.4.10. I just downgraded to iTunes 8.2.1 and it's working alright.

(I can't use 10.4.11 because Apple screwed up support for my printer in that version).

You can get the older version from here:

1. Rename your <myname>/Music/iTunes folder to iTunes.old
2. Stop the iTunesHelper process from Activity Monitor
3. Drag iTunes from Applications to trash and empty trash
4. Install 8.2.1 from the dmg
5. Rename Music/iTunes to iTunes.new (or just delete)
6. Rename iTunes.old to iTunes
7. Consider switching to Windows7

I am having the same problem. How do i disable the ituneshelper in the activity monitor? i live for music and i love my mac. this is most upsetting!

I have the same problem and error message, up to date with OS 10.4.11 and safari version 4. Come on Apple we need this sorted out quickly.

I did as suggested: Trashed iTunes 9, downloaded 8.2.1 (6), stopped Help via the activity monitor, trashed iTunes 9, installed IT8 and...voila: My music reappeared!

Lesson learned: "If she ain't broke, don't fix 'er!"

Never again will I naively trust Apple upgrades. Wiser to keep what works. Why risk crapola happening? Why get nonsensical error messages that not only don't tell you what's wrong, they don't say how to fix things.

To quit iTunes Helper...

Go to Application/Utilities
Launch Activity Monitor
Select "All Processes" in the top right corner
Scroll until you find iTunes Helper (or type iTunes into the filter)
Select iTunes Helper
Click the big red "Quit Process" button in the top left.

I just did the process SideCar Harry suggested - it seemed to work and then I went to open ITunes again and it said "The file "iTunes Library" cannot be read because it was created by a newer version of iTunes." Did I do something wrong? Is there anything I can do now??
