Podcast playlists now not syncing with iTunes 9.

I have a few smart playlists set to contain podcasts. (BBC podcasts for example) My playlist in iTunes contains a few podcasts but after finishing syncing the podcast playlists on my iPod are empty. The playlists that contain music sync ok. This function used to work in the previous version.
I'm using an older 80 gig iPod. Is anyone else having this problem?

Thanks for help Sam. The one bug that I am still running into is that if I modify the Podcast settings the way you describe, I see my playlists but any podcasts that are not part of the playlist are not brought to iPhone at all.

For example my smart playlist is set to exclude video so while I drive to work it feeds me only audio podcasts. But then if I want while at work I can go into video section and play video podcasts. Following your fix I get my audio playlist but only that, no video.

Anyone else split out audio/video and figure out how to keep podcast playlist in place AND have video sync to iPhone?

Thanks,

c-

Thanks everyone.

What a nasty tricky little change.

Someone at Apple being a little too clever for our good it seems.

I'm sure we'll get used to the new way but hiding the options I want if one chooses to sync all seems odd as ****.

But, yet again the people here supply the answer that I couldn't work out myself and couldn't find elsewhere.

The other strangeness I have found is that you can still have genre in the browser (as opposed to columns) in movies but not in music. Another bit of excessive cleverness gone wrong IMO.

I could have sworn this was working yesterday (after making the changes suggested by Sam), but my **podcasts on the iPod are also out of order**. I may have applied the iTunes update since -- I don't recall the exact order of events.

I have always kept them in date added order, and on iTunes they still are both on my iTunes library and as is the one the iPod shows for the iPod Touch. However, when I view/listen to them on my iPod, they are in some other, as yet undetermined, order.

Additional info: Not only are the podcasts out of order, but the ipod Touch does not play them in the sequence listed (as if shuffle were selected -- which it is not).

Also when I turn the iPod on after syncing and press the "music" button, I get a message:

"Updating library...
This may take a few minutes."

which I have never noticed before.

So I suspect the problem may be on the iPod Touch software (3.1.1 7C145) to which I recently updated. Anyone know how to back out the iPod Touch OS to a prior version?

I updated to iTunes 9 and also the 3.1 firmware for iPhone. Thanks to Sam's comments I can at least get all podcasts (video or audio) on the iPhone and my audios on one list for listening on way to work. But alas they are not in the right order * I have them sorted in smart playlist based on Duration (time) from shortest to longest but the order on the iPhone makes no sense. I have tried sorting by a bunch of columns to see what the iPhone may be doing but non tie out.

Side note, if you expand the iPhone device to see all the playlists on the device and choose the smart playlist for the podcasts its actually blank. They are there on the phone (wrong sort order and all) but they dont show up via browsing device while its plugged in and iTunes is up.

Getting close but need to figure out the order issue. If I hit on anything I will post findings.

Yup, worked for me! Simply unchecked ""Automatically include 'all unplayed' episodes of 'selected podcasts' on the new Podcasts sync page. And under 'include episodes from Playlists' checked my "_ALL PODCASTS" smart playlist. All is well...shows are now back in the smart playlist on the iPod, and show up in Podcasts on the iPod. They are also in the same order, oldest first.

I have zero interest in having to fumble with the touch screen while driving/biking just to get podcasts to play back to back...thanks very much!
