I have a few smart playlists set to contain podcasts. (BBC podcasts for example) My playlist in iTunes contains a few podcasts but after finishing syncing the podcast playlists on my iPod are empty. The playlists that contain music sync ok. This function used to work in the previous version.
I'm using an older 80 gig iPod. Is anyone else having this problem?
Funny, I just got an email from Apple touting the new software.
Just like everyone is saying. The playlist in itunes looks fine, but on my ipod they are all out of order.
Just finished a full restore as a new ipod, set up the podcast tab as suggested here, and the podcast are still out of order. I give up! Apple FIX IT!!
For me, it's synching a few Podcasts in the podcast area, but not most of them, despite the Devices tab reporting that all the podcasts are synched and there. I created a smart playlist just so I could play them, but they're out of order, of course, and I much prefer to just use the Podcast tab.
Something interesting that I noticed just now. Looking through my Podcast file in the Finder, I noticed a folder of podcasts labeled "unknown Podcast," and all of those shows are the ones that don't seem to sync up properly (other new episodes do seem to be working in a limited fashion). So, I selected the Podcast main title for the show (the one with the arrow under which all the episodes fell) and changed the "Sort Show" field to the proper show title (it was empty). Lo and behold, when I synced up the next time, that show properly appeared in my iPod Touch's Podcast list!
However, I've found several podcasts that I can't edit that information for Sort Show, so I can't get those to behave properly. Not sure if this is of any help to folks, but it's certainly interesting.
One last follow up. It looks like if you have multiple episodes of a podcast, you can get to the Sort Show information field and fill it in, fixing it in both Finder and iTunes! I just downloaded an old episode for a podcast that I normally keep just the new shows, and it allowed me to change that field and sync properly.
Well, interesting turn. I had one podcast that wouldn't be fixed with just a change of Show and Sort Show fields (the file stayed in the Unknown Podcast folder and didn't sync). However, I deleted it from iTunes and then redownloaded the episode and it went into the correct Finder folder and synced to my iPod. I only have 6-7 shows that are in the Unknown folder right now, so it's not too much hassle to fix it, but for those with loads of shows, it could be a pain.
However, I have an old original nano with only 1 GB and only have room to sync new shows and shows I'm not finished with. Anyone know how to create a smart list that contains only the new shows? I can manually add shows to another playlist that I have to finish listening to... Thanks in advance.
Thanks, Sam. I read your solution and another following yours. However, only your solution worked for my (aging) iPod nano. Too bad that Apple screwed this one up. I was on a long trip yesterday when I realized that my favorite playlist was gone. I could normally get to it with just a few clicks, which is handy while driving. Thanks again.
I created a smart playlist that includes having the Playcount equal 0. That way only podcast that I've haven't listened to appear. Of course along with everything else going on, I've noticed that that playlist no longer live updates on the ipod. Podcasts used to disappear out of the playlist after I listened to them. Now they are still there and I have to remember where I left off.
That happened to me on my iPod classic too, but only because I had a playlist unchecked that the smart playlist depended on. I’m afraid the only advice I can offer here is to make sure that’s not the case.
I just upgraded to ITune 9 and you can add me to the list! As a test I created a new playlist, added 1 song and 1 podcast. When I sync to the IPod there is no podcast. A playlist with only podcast does not show up at all. Very frustrated.
