iPhone 3G w/ OS 3.1 - Problems (Slow operation)

I have the same problem. I upgraded to the 3.1 OS from 3.0.1. My iPhone 3G is not unlocked or jailbroken. After the update, the phone's functionality slowed severely. Pressing the home button, side scrolling to other home screens, placing calls, and internet connectivity all were severely slowed down.

I have iTunes 9.0 installed on a Mac Mini with Snow Leopard 10.6.1

I then, restored the phone using the iPhone restore option and then restored using last saved backup. No improvement.

I then decided to restore to full factory settings again and setup the phone as new. Some improvement noted, but as soon as I started installing apps again the slow response (in all the aspects above), returned.

I have one of the (recently removed) free memory apps, MemoryInfo, and it seems the phone on its idle state is using above 95% of the total memory. I did also notice severe battery usage, after just 2hrs of idling the phone the battery drained to 65%.

Apple Engineers - If you do read this, please issue a patch for OS 3.1 or allow us to downgrade to OS 3.0.1 until this problem is resolved.

Thank you.

hmmm - interesting.
I deleted the tethering profile that was available for t-mobile in the Netherlands and now it works just fine again! Apple decided to cancel the tethering support in os 3.1 - but the profile and also the on/off switch still exist after the upgrade to 3.1.
I just deleted the profile and I'm back in business again...

My 3G iphone, which with I had never experienced any problems, is giving me a lot of grief... I don't have the exchange server problem, but the "won't wake up" problem a couple of times a day. I tried erase all settings from the phone and restore from backup (don't try it it takes a couple of hours and doesn't change anything), I tried shutting down wifi and it still is doing it... Reverting to 3.0.1 seems to be the only short term solution, but I was wondering if the baseband upgrade (if any) would prevent me from downgrading ? Anybody tried it ?

My problem is also related more to issues with connection to the 3G/Edge network. Due to this update, I basically now have an iPhone 3G that is more like an iPod touch with limited phone connectivity. If I am not connected to Wi-Fi, I can't access the internet with Safari or use any Apps that require an internet connection (Twitterific, etc.). The AT&T symbol doesn't show a '3G' or 'E' for Edge and regularly goes to few or no bars of connection strength.

Earlier today, none of my Apps from the App Store would even open, but after a few reboots & a sync to my MacBook, the Apps are now back to normal. I don't have any problems with my Exchange account as long as I am connected to Wi-Fi, so I believe my Exchange is ok...but rather the 3.1 update has done something to my phone's ability to connect to the data network. I've only seen one other mention of that problem and that was in this post....so is this an uncommon problem?

well after repeated restores i finally decided it was time to take a trip to the apple store. when i got there to check in it was recommended that i have at&t change the sim card, so i went and had that done. then went back to apple, good thing they are both at the mall. then when i get to the genius bar and explained what the problem was he said that they would restore and that a sim card and a restore usually fixes it and to bring it back to see what error reports would be(this had to be done because i restored it the night before and there wouldn't be enough for them to see in the error reporting) So at first it worked, like all the other times. when i got to my vehicle it quit working so i walked back in and showed them the phone still doesn't work. they then swapped for a new phone and i have updated to 3.1 and i have not experienced any problems, can get online, and make phone calls.
i have no clue what was going on, but i suspect that all the issues i had before this was hardware related and the latest update killed the weak link

It's getting worse and worse..
It was already slightly slower with 3.0.1 .. But still bareable.
Now with 3.1 it's ****.. I really liked my iPhone .. but now i am almost on the verge or throwing it out the window.. I did a full restore and nothing changed.

here is what i observed:

1. Notifications for Push even if they are off the Icon is still there.. Since i installed the first "notifications" enabled app (in 3.0.1) it is where i really noticed a slowdown.
2. Also 3.01 started having "Network connectivity issues" (but still not too anoying) now in 3.1 it's ****.
3. the "Slide to Unlock".. can take up to 5 seconds to unlock sometimes..
4. Typing a E-mail message is barely usable at sometimes but not always.. random slowdowns where i can't even type and have to wait for the letter to respond.
5. Calendars from Exchage where completely screwed after sync. Some just dissapeared and no new ones would apear.. (Fixed this one by recreating the calandars account).
6. Taking Pictures.. **** i have to wait and wait just for the Tak picture button to respond.

However.. i did not notice any "internet access" slowdowns al all.. Safari seems to be working fine for me.

Please Apple Engeineers do something.. My iPhone is becomming less and less fun to use everyday (and i use it for business mostly).

I have similar problems on an iPhone 3G with 3.1 and it is driving me crazy.

I have had to revert to my old Nokia (which was 'just' a phone) as I need it for work - I'm an Doctor and I can't afford to be without my phone.

My phone randomly crashes/freezes/slows down. I can't replicate it at all.

I've tried a full restore to a blank slate and that still doesn't fix the problem. It then crashed while syncing (got a little cogwheel icon over the battery display when syncing) and it took iTunes 9 down with it!

Very poor effort Apple. I'm a big fan of small changes to limit the chance of bugs but what on Earth happened with going from 3.0 to 3.1!

Regards,

Paul
PS: Bring back the ability to enable tethering, thanks a lot 'Big Brother'.

I have the same problems as everyone else with my 3GS.
I had one crash post 3.1 installation during synchronisation. I don't know if that had anything to do with it, but I suspect that is a side-effect rather than a cause.
Apple obviously know about the problem but won't comment for legal reasons. You could sue them I guess if they acknowledged a bug had caused you to miss calls or similar.
I hope Mr Jobs is experiencing the same issue. Perhaps that will make them provide a fix quicker.
There is no question that it's a software problem. When you restart the phone it is fine. For how long depends on what you turn on.

I have an iphone 3G and have had all of the same problems since I upgraded to OS 3.1.

The frustrating part is that I have an unresponsive touch screen at times. It is so slow to recognize touch.

Tried sending an SMS this morning and it took 17 seconds for the native messaging App to open. Noticing this with all Apps. Safari is so slow.

Sliding the bar to answer calls. Unlocking phone. = All slow.
