trouble making calls after 3.1 update

Anyone else having trouble making phone calls after the 3.1 update? I keep trying to make a call and it says calling but nothing happens. The only way I can get a call to go through is to turn off phone and restart it. But even turning the phone off has become weird as half way through the shut down process it starts flashing the main screen with the clock and my background pic (not the home screen). Also after charging my battery it shows only half charged until I restart the phone. Once restarted everything seems to work fine... for awhile, then I'm back to the same issue.

I've also had the same problem after updating to 3.1. My error message says "could not activate cellular data network" when I try to access my email on 3G. I tried restoring from back up and restoring as new iphone. I also tried switching SIM cards at AT&T (advice from a genius) which did not work. I finally got a replacement phone with 3.0. I did not update to 3.1 until MMS came out and now the same problem is back on the replacement phone. Getting another replacement phone obviously will not solve the problem and I'm hesitant to update to 3.1.2 with all the battery drainage problems!

Yep seeing the same crap even after the 3.1.2 update here.

A phone that doesn't work as a phone (and worse yet fails silently and seems to show that you are still online) == a big ole paperweight.

The real iPhone killer == Apple's iPhone OS 3 .. not anyone else's hardware. Apple is doing a fine job of killing the iPhone themselves.

mmmmm, 5 days without posts to this discussion.
Well, let me be the next one that has "the" problem. Upgraded to latest version and no connection anymore. I have downgraded to 3.0 (7a341) and have modem firmware 05.11.07. My phone shows "searching" for hours..other sim doesnt work either neither does "Airplaine Mode", setting my phone nr (he does not want to save it!) or disabling 3G. I have used "old" sims and new sims.

I am also having the same issues. I was on the phone with Apple support two nights ago for over an hour. I told the representative I had spoken to other iPhone users that were experiencing the same issue. He acted like I was the first one to mention this to him, even though it appears to be a known issue. He had me restore the phone and "re-activate" it through iTunes, without using the backup. I was obviously able to retrieve all of my data since it was in iTunes, but all of settings were restored on the phone. We made a couple of test calls and it seemed to be working, but when I woke up the next morning it said "Searching" and "No Service" again. The worst thing is you don't even know when it is not working. I feel like we pay a lot of money for iPhone service to have it only work sporadically. I hope they come up with a fix soon!

iPhone 3G user in Aus...updated to 3.1.2 and still experiencing issue.
The other scary thing that just happened is when i went to restart the phone it went from a phone that was fully charged but unable to receive/make calls to a dead phone with no charge.
The only thing I did was turn the phone off and try to restart it. ***?!

I have the same problem described in these posts...

- had an iphone 3gs 3.1.2 with zero issues, phone was stolen..
- got a replacement iphone, restored by backup from itunes
- getting the issues described.

1. Appears to have started after i tried to call someone and the phone kinda freaked out and the green bar at the top saying tap to return to call , but it didnt respond. Had to reboot the phone to get rid of it. Not sure if it really started after this or its a co-incidence.

2. Now the phone randomly stops sending text messages and receiving phone calls and making phonecalls.

3. Have confirmed its not the phone service as works fine with another phone (sony ericson)

4. Yet to try turning off 3g as suggested in this thread.

Annoying that my previous phone worked perfectly, and this one isnt....

Network: Vodafone Australia.

cheers
James

Not sure if anyone is still following this thread but..

I can confirm on my iphone 3GS v3.1.2 that turning off 3G fixes the problem immediately. Keeping 3G off removes the problem completely but obviously that s_ucks as its a big component of the iphone working optimally.

Out of curiosity, does anyone have a invisishield or similar on their iphone? Its the only difference i had between this iphone and my previous iphone (that i know about at least)... new one has the plastic invisishield on it...

If you have a new phone AND you have a new SIM AND it still works with 3G disabled AND there is no difference to the problem then MAYBE it's a 'carrier' issue combining your carrier file specifics with your carrier's 3G network coverage and how they have set up their network lay-offs from 3G when the 3G service is marginal or fails.

Personally I'd check network coverage maps for 3G and 2G (GSM in one form or another) for your carrier (you don't give your location so it's impossible to be specific) and then give the carrier a hard time to prove to YOU that it's not THEIR network that's causing YOUR problem!

Good luck!
