trouble making calls after 3.1 update

Anyone else having trouble making phone calls after the 3.1 update? I keep trying to make a call and it says calling but nothing happens. The only way I can get a call to go through is to turn off phone and restart it. But even turning the phone off has become weird as half way through the shut down process it starts flashing the main screen with the clock and my background pic (not the home screen). Also after charging my battery it shows only half charged until I restart the phone. Once restarted everything seems to work fine... for awhile, then I'm back to the same issue.

we have all tried it doesn't work

"We" have all tried what?

Is your name Kreskin? Can you read minds and bend spoons? If not, how on earth do you know if everyone who has posted in this thread has tried the troubleshooting steps I've provided with no change?

No one in this thread has provided anything they have done except for powering their iPhone off and on with no change.

And no one I have replied to in this thread has responded that restoring their iPhone with iTunes from their iPhone's backup or restoring their iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from their iPhone's backup has not resolved it.

Alan, Your posts in this thread went from unhelpful to obnoxious.

You've apparently not followed where other folks have attested to trying the airplane mode trick and turning off 3G: "No one in this thread has provided anything they have done except for powering their iPhone off and on with no change."

You've acknowledged that you haven't experienced the problem and been dismissive of anyone having the problem: "No such problem here, and I haven't seen this reported here in any significant numbers - few and far between."

Then despite not experiencing the problem and so not possibly knowing the solution, you've repeatedly posted an extremely time intensive guess at a solution which I will attest now does not solve the problem.

Even if your repeated suggestion had worked, looking for a solution other than spending several hours restoring and re-synching, restoring and resynching isn't at all unreasonable. But since your definition of unreasonable includes expecting production software to be bug free or for people to be reimbursed for services for which they have paid but not received service, then I guess you and I might have a different definition of the term.

Allan Sampson,

Why don't you go and "play" in the threads where everyone has the perfect phone, with the perfect company, and where everyone is perfect.

The steps you are repeating are steps that are standard procedure. They are nothing new, and there is nothing magical about it. I guarantee these folks have contacted tech support and performed these steps long before finding this forum and asking for help. As a matter of fact, these steps get performed over an over again. I can tell you first hand that there is NO magic bullet for some of these issues, some of the time.

Stop harassing folks that do have issues. I have no problem reporting your behavior to Apple.

You've acknowledged that you haven't experienced the problem and been dismissive of anyone having the problem:

Baloney.

I love it when someone looking for help who doesn't volunteer their time to help anyone here critiques what is provided by someone who does.

The additional posters in this thread I replied to did not include with their post that restoring their iPhone with iTunes from their iPhone's backup or as a new iPhone has not resolve it. NONE, and I don't read minds.

There are standard troubleshooting steps to take in order, which is exactly what would be provided when calling AppleCare.

The troubleshooting steps include powering the iPhone off and on (the "airplane mode trick" is while the iPhone is powered on, and powering the iPhone off and on accomplishes the same), an iPhone reset, restoring the iPhone with iTunes from the iPhone's backup, and restoring the iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from the iPhone's backup. There are no other steps to take with the exception of one - trying a new SIM card.

If none of the above work, calling AppleCare at (800) 694-7466, or making an appointment at an Apple store is the next step, which will involve an exchange under warranty if the iPhone remains under warranty.

If the problem lies with a phone and not with the carrier, the carrier will not reimburse you for services you have paid for but not received.

If this isn't harassment, I don't know what is.

No kidding - who said there is anything magical about it?

I guarantee these folks have contacted tech support and performed these steps long before finding this forum and asking for help.

You can guarantee nothing of the kind. If this is so, then the person posting basically "me to" only should include such important information with their post such as - I've already contacted AppleCare and restoring my iPhone with iTunes from my iPhone's backup and as a new iPhone has not resolved it.

Stop harassing folks that do have issues. I have no problem reporting your behavior to Apple.

I haven't harassed anyone, and you do that. <Teeth chattering>

"No such problem here, and I haven't seen this reported here in any significant numbers - few and far between."

And this was in response to this.

Apparently 3.1 "broke" 3G connection to ATT network.

If 3.1 "broke" 3G connection to AT&T's network, more than likely everyone or the overwhelming majority of those in a 3G network area with a 3G or 3GS would be experiencing the same, which is not the case.

I am also having the same exact problem. I have tried restore from backup, and am currently restoring as new, but after reading this thread I am not hopeful. Tech support (611) says they have not heard of anyone having this problem. I can see that I am certainly not alone. Is there a way to report these errors to apple so that they can fix it and get us an update asap, I live 4 hours from a mac store and I am out of my hardware warranty. I have not harmed this phone, all I did was update it as was recommended per the manufacturer. This is entirely unacceptable

Sep 15, 2009 6:15 PM in response to jdw2536

Other than the standard answers, you're going to be out of luck. Restore is one option. Restore from recovery and/or restore from DFU mode. Restore from DFU is the most complete restore. If that doesn't do it for you, you're going to have to take the phone back to Apple and complain. If you stay legit, then Apple will no longer allow you to downgrade the software to a more stable version. At least with a 3GS. Apple now requires connection to Apple servers to "get approval" for the software being installed. Right now your choice is 3.1 or 3.1.

You're attitude really stinks buddy. You're condescending and confrontational with a lot of people. You need some forum time out time in the corner. Consider "volunteering" somewhere else.

Hey,

since 3.1 my phone was unusable. 3G connection was shown, but no calls, text data was going in or out. turned 3G off and now phone is working perfectly and has the best batterylife since I bought it over a year ago. but data connection is obviously slow, so would live to get this issue fixed.

I also tried all the resets, restores etc. and problem still exists.

BTW, I am not in the US but in Switzerland, so definitely not a carrier problem.

Sep 16, 2009 1:25 PM in response to jddny

Yes, same problem here, running iPhone 3G with OS 3.1. Resetting the iPhone did fix the problem, at least temporarily. I have had it happen three times that I know of, and each time the reset brought back the ability to make and receive calls. That's only a temporary fix, obviously, because it's happened multiple times.

For the record, I never saw this problem with OS 3.0.
