trouble making calls after 3.1 update

Anyone else having trouble making phone calls after the 3.1 update? I keep trying to make a call and it says calling but nothing happens. The only way I can get a call to go through is to turn off phone and restart it. But even turning the phone off has become weird as half way through the shut down process it starts flashing the main screen with the clock and my background pic (not the home screen). Also after charging my battery it shows only half charged until I restart the phone. Once restarted everything seems to work fine... for awhile, then I'm back to the same issue.

definitely having the same problem as well... what's odd to me is that it's happened nearly every day since updating to 3.1, at around the same time (5 pm). I usually realize what's going on when all my text messages fail to send. turning the phone on and off works, but it's a pain in the ***.

Apple, time to crack the whips on the code monkeys!

I am having similar issues as is my wife. I have restored my phone to back up. Restored as a new iPhone. I have reset the network settings on my phone. I have restored multiple times. I have still having severe signal problems since upgrading to 3.1.

At first I had no signal strength at all and it read no service at upper left. I then restored to new and it worked fine. Then the phone just reset itself on it's own and then the phone was empty, no contacts, no setting, no signal, nothing. That was after a successful sync. Then I restored the phone to new and it seemed to work fine visually because I had full bars. Then when trying to send a text message it wouldn't work, then same with a phone call. Then I would receive about four text messages at the same time and be able to reply to one then it wouldn't work again. All calls go to voice mail.

I am really starting to get ****** off and this has been happening for three days now since I updated. Anyone with advise or known help please let me know. Anyone that knows if apple and att know that this is a problem please let me know. Is it common or am I the only sad soul that has this problem?

PS-I am located in the Chicago area so I should have no problem getting service.

I just want to add my name to this also.

This is terrible, so dissapointed!

I lose network connectivity, sometimes with full bars. No calls in or out, no texts, no data.
I have to reboot the phone to get any service at all. Several times a day since upgrading to 3.1.

This needs to be fixed.

Useless!

Standard troubleshooting steps in order are as follows:

Power the iPhone off and on - which you have tried with no change.

An iPhone reset, which is done by pressing and holding the home button and the sleep/wake or on/off button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo and then release - ignoring the slide to turn off prompt when doing so. An iPhone reset does not affect any data or settings.

No change after a reset, restore your iPhone with iTunes from your iPhone's backup. Sync your iPhone immediately before doing so to update your iPhone's backup and to update any data that is kept synchronized such as contacts. If there is a problem with your iPhone's backup (with no way to determine this in advance, restoring from your iPhone's backup will also restore the problem.)

No change after restoring from your iPhone's backup, try restoring your iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup.

No change after any of these troubleshooting steps, call AppleCare at (800) 694-7466, or make an appointment at an Apple store if there is one nearby.

You are not addressing Apple here.

If you have done all the troubleshooting steps provided in this thread, if you are in the U.S. you can call AppleCare at (800) 694-7466, or make an appointment at an Apple store if there is one nearby.

Some have reported that restoring their iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from their iPhone's backup did not resolve the problem. Getting a new SIM card did resolve the problem. If you have restored your iPhone with iTunes as a new iPhone or not from your iPhone's backup with no change, if you are in the U.S. you can get a new SIM card at an AT&T corporate store.

Look, the troubleshooting steps are appreciated, but the simple fact of the matter is this:
* we should not have to reboot a phone whenever we want to make a phone call *

This is a recurring problem for me (and quite a few others, apparently) that only appeared AFTER the 3.1 software update. Yes, I can hide the problem by rebooting, at least for a little while. But that doesn't mean the problem is gone. It is entirely possible that the software update uncovered a rare hardware defect, but right now all the fingers are pointing at the software update.

so the new sim card didn't work at exactly 3:00 today it went from having full service to no service and it wasn't moved at all from were it was. went to the apple store and they finally gave me a new phone im still convinced its a software issue i want to use 3.1 cause i like the features but im afraid to put it back on for fear that it will do the same thing

In my office we have 15 people with 7 of us using iPhones. The 5 people who have updated to OS3.1 now have our abilty to call out, received calls or send/receive data after the phone has been on for more than a few minutes. It takes a reboot to get the phone to work. How can you think this is not a more general problem with this update and the 3G phone.
