trouble making calls after 3.1 update

Anyone else having trouble making phone calls after the 3.1 update? I keep trying to make a call and it says calling but nothing happens. The only way I can get a call to go through is to turn off phone and restart it. But even turning the phone off has become weird as half way through the shut down process it starts flashing the main screen with the clock and my background pic (not the home screen). Also after charging my battery it shows only half charged until I restart the phone. Once restarted everything seems to work fine... for awhile, then I'm back to the same issue.

I just spoke with Apple, they said it was that the network settings need to be reset with the 3.1 update.
Here is what we did:
1. Turned Airplane mode on for 15 seconds then off (Settings/Airplane Mode)
2. Turned 3g off for 15 seconds then back on (Settings/General/Network/Enable 3G)
3. then "Reset Network Settings" (Settings/General/Reset/Reset Network Settings)

So far so good.
Maybe it will help. Wish us all luck!

I have the same problem since the first day and tried restore several times. I have called Apple and after another restore they decided to have me send in the phone for a replacement (nearest Apple store is an hour away). I will be receiving the phone tomorrow will report back if it is better.

I'm having the same problem as jddny in the first post. I have already restore as a new phone twice. I have taken my phone to an Apple store and have gotten it replaced (iPhone 3G); followed by going to AT&T and getting a new sim card.

The only way I can get actually signal for my phone is by restarting it. The screen will either get stuck with No Service or 2-3 bars of service, but you cannot call out or get Internet access. Doing the airplane mode trick does not fix the problem. My phone seems to only exhibit this problem at my house.

So today, I went into AT&T to have them checkout my tower in my area. Hopefully it's just a tower problem and not a problem with the 3.1 firmware. I believe I had this same problem in 3.0.1.

I have on: 3G, WIFI, Push, and Location Services.

All I can say is I feel your pain.

ARE YOU F'n KIDDING ME!?! Seriously!!! I upgraded in the early morning of 9/10 and I've had trouble on the 3G network ever since!!! I've started 2 threads about it and I'd be willing to bet that close to 25% of threads started since the 3.1 upgrade came out are asking questions about this exact topic!!!

You can't be serious! I mean I know you're an "Apple Expert" and all, but how can't you just blatantly blow off all of Apple's customers complaining about the exact same problem???

Apple really needs to learn to #1 - test their code better, #2 - offer a way to rollback the code w/o a restore while they work on a fix for the bug in the new code & #3 learn how to take responsibility for the screw-ups they make!

I have actually been having the same exact problem. I reset my phone or turn it of then on and it works for a day or so and then it happens again and I have to reset it again. It stops making calls and won't send texts until I reset it.. Pretty annoying, not sure anyone has really found a permanent solution to this yet. Please post any other ideas if you find something new! Thanks!

DFU reset gave me 3 days, but I just had to restart to make a call. I have tried the airplane mode, 3G, Network settings reset. We will see if this works. I got an email from apple asking me to log the data and email it to them, but the instructions are ridiculous and I couldn't make it work. Hopefully this indicates apple is responding to this issue

Try turning off 3G.

I have been having the same issue the last few days ever since I downloaded the software upgrade. Tried resetting, reinstalling, turning on airplane mode, turning off 3G and network reset. All methods got it working for a short time, but after after I stopped using the phone for a while the problem returned. Got tired of all the steps so I just starting hitting network reset, which worked. But never for long. Then I decided to turn off 3G and I haven't had any issues since. I can get on the net, send text's, make calls. All with no problems. Been about 12 hours so far with no issues. Hopefully I am in the clear.

Same problem, I' m from Italy and like you I try restoring it in DFU like new Phone without backup but nothing. In Italy there are a lot of forums where you can read about users with this problem. Something about my case: Iphone 3G 8GB updated to 3.1 from 3.0.1 never JB, first problem with my Iphone from August 2008. I hope that Apple will release a new firmware very very often. Now I must use another phone because I need it to work and callings are the basic functions in a phone. Sorry for my English and good evening.

I have spent the day searching online help forums in order to deal with the issue of failed calls in/out as well as failed SMS in/out. I read thru this post, tried everything I found. Set up an appointment at the local Apple store. I finally called Apple support and after explaining to the level 1 tech all that I had done already I was promoted to a high level tech who finally had me eject and re-input the sim card. 3 hours later, and this is the longest all day, things are still going fine. I offer this if only to be a band-aid until you can get more help. I am as of now, keeping my appointment with the Apple store. Just in case.

Same problems from Hungary! 16GB phone, factory condition, T-Mobile as operator.
Experienced call drop problems already with 3.0.1, but they somehow disappeared after a while.
3.1. definitely *****. It is a perfect Internet device, but no mobile phone at all though everything seems OK on the screen - can not place or receive calls or sms. shorter battery life. reboot 2-3 times a day.

hope Apple programmers do not sleep well these days but work on a new upgrade.

After having absolutely no problems with my iPhone, I started having a few wierd happenings like this after 3.0, then a few more after 3.0.1 (straight to vm when the signals great, black screen and the phone responds to nothing, vms popping up like up to an hr later.) It was so random, I didn't bother with it and now I'm in the habit of dialing to see if I have a vm, rather than wait for the alert. I think I'll pass on the 3.1 until there are some real solutions to this obviously chronic problem.
