No Wifi after iPhone 3.1 upgrade

I upgraded my iPhone 3G to the 3.1 firmware on Wednesday. Since then, my phone can't see any wifi networks. I've tried to do a restore twice, as well as rebooting the phone a couple times, and it hasn't helped. Has anyone else experienced this and found a fix? It's looking like a trip to the Genius bar 😟

My wifi was working prior to 3.1.2. I went to the genius bar, but they had no clue, and claimed to have never seen this problem ever before.
It will detect wireless networks, but not connect. So obviously the wifi chip and antenna work, or it would not even detect networks. I suspect the upgrade to 3.1.2 somehow foobared the wifi at the OS level.
I even downgraded to 3.0.1, then back to 3.1.2, but it still doesn't work.

Common Apple, let's at least acknowledge the presence of the issue.

Well, guess what? I'm having the same problems.... but in addition the upgrades have also trashed my GPS!! We are getting a new Apple store close to me by the end of the month so will see what happens - I haven't even bothered to contact Apple as I'm sure they're aware of the issues by now and seeing as how I bought the iPhone (3G 16GB) from O2 in the UK on the day of their release I am out of warranty. I was planning to upgrade to 3GS in Jan when contract runs out but have a dilemma now!! I love the phone but dodgy wi-fi and GPS kindof kills it for me!! Come on Apple, sort it out!! PS. After the 3.1.2 upgrade my battery just died unexpectedly?? Frustrated, you bet......!!

Me too 😟 I wasn't even aware there existed an issue where people were unable to connect to their home wifi network, until I was hit with this after the upgrade from 3.1 to 3.1.2 Apparently this issue pre-dates back to 2.2.1 of the iPhone OS for some users. I was fine until last week, and feel like kicking myself for upgrading to 3.1.2.

Now, I've even tried downgrading, but doesn't help. You name it, I've done it. Reset home router, played with security settings; also reset, restored & rebooted iPhone. No dice. If I connect to an unsecured network, the connection drops after 30 seconds. Have drained my iPhone battery, and did the freezer thing. Without a data-plan the phone is practically useless to me.

Apple, do something already, this is just ridiculous. If anyone out there has any other suggestions I might have over-looked, I would appreciate it.

WiFi worked fine for over a year. As soon as I applied the 3.1.2 update, no more WiFi. Apple broke my iPhone.

Called Apple Support...they had me do "Settings / Reset / Reset Network Settings", then hard reset phone, check "Settings / General / About / Wi-Fi Address". It had a value, so she said to connect to my laptop, resynch and it should work. Nope. My network name showed up for about 5 seconds, then disappeared, and hasn't come back. She made me an appointment to go to a genius bar.

After getting off the phone, I ran through the exact same procedure again...except now I DON'T have any value in the Wi-Fi Address settings, and "Settings / Wi-Fi" is greyed out.

From all the posts on this forum, I'm expecting a bit of a fight with the "genius", since my phone is about 45 days out of warranty. But it was working just fine up until Apple provided a "new and improved" firmware...Apple broke my iPhone. I don't care if the hardware isn't under warranty any more, Apple broke my iPhone, so Apple should fix or replace it. If I bring a car in to the garage, and the mechanic drives it into a wall, I certainly don't expect to have to pay them for a new one just because "it's not under warranty!" Apple broke my iPhone, so Apple should fix it.

Hmm....maybe I can get the "United Breaks Guitars" guy to work on a new video...."Apple Breaks iPhones!" I claim copyright on that phrase!! 🙂

Same issues over here. Replaced my work iPhone 3G with a new one (because I changed jobs) and can no longer connect to my own WiFi (which worked perfectly with last one).

I see all the networks but when clicking on one and entering the correct password I get "Unable to join network X". Tried creating an ad-hoc network without password on my iMac ... this works. Tried sharing my internet connection via iMac without password ... this fails.

Same issue here. I bought a new 3GS last monday, and upgraded my old 8 GB i-phone and the new 3GS to the last software version from i-tunes.

Both, the new 3GS and the old one which worked fine on 2.1 version have started to lost wifi networks. they connect but register strange addresses out of range on the information label...I tried to restart the router(s), the phones...nothing. My workmates have started to laugh at me on the issue.

Come on, apple guys, is so difficult test things before people get really upset?

Prove that the new 3GS will connect to a network other than your own. Or better still ask an Apple Genius to connect it to their network. If they can make it work clearly the point of failure will not be the phone. Also check that you are running the latest version of the firmware on your router. Save your current configuration. Then release the IP address allocated to the iPhone/s make sure that your channel is not overlapping with another Wi-Fi Router switch off encryption off. On the iPhone reset the network. Power off the iPhone pressing the power and menu buttons together for about 20 seconds until the Apple logo disappears. Then power up the iPhone and with the Router switched on broadcasting try and establish connectivity.

adnixon - surely with all these posts you will realise that the issue is NOT with the routers!!! Although it is very nice to see helpful replies with suggestions of lots of possible solutions, pretty much all the posts on this topic are complaining of 'lack of wireless connnections'where there had been before - or even using hotspots etc. I personally have sat next to someone with another iPhone (prior to them upgrading) and looked at their wireless connection (on more than one router) whilst mine showed nothing. The issue is with the iPhone - more specifically..... post 3.1 upgrade - Hence the title of the Forum Message.
