No Wifi after iPhone 3.1 upgrade

I upgraded my iPhone 3G to the 3.1 firmware on Wednesday. Since then, my phone can't see any wifi networks. I've tried to do a restore twice, as well as rebooting the phone a couple times, and it hasn't helped. Has anyone else experienced this and found a fix? It's looking like a trip to the Genius bar 😟

I got it working now:
First i tried to turn of the security on my NETGEAR router. That helped first of all. After that I upgraded the NETGEAR firmware at did a hard reset to factory settings, turned on the security again as before and now everything works as it did before I udgraded my iPhone from 3.0.1 to 3.1.2:-)

I "upgraded" to 3.1.2 yesterday and my wifi, which seemed to work fine last night is now completely broken and none of the steps documented by Apple (or anyone hear) worked. I called Apple tech support and they told me that (A) my phone just went out of warranty and (B) they have not heard anything about a problem with the iPhone and wifi, in spite of the fact that it's all over the net and apparently not even a new problem.

Sigh

I've had the WiFi issues since sometime around the 3.1/MMS release, and I upgraded to 3.1.2 last week expecting that things might have improved.

Verdict? Worse. Not only does WiFi still not work, the battery will drain itself in about 4 hours on the EDGE network (3G signal is bad in this part of town). Though, the upside is that I can use it as a clothes iron because of how hot the sucker gets now.

I really enjoy my Macs and iPods, but this phone is starting to become a real pain in the rear.

I have the exact same problem but it didn't happen right after an update, I think it happened a few hours later because I was using this remote control app to control my pc mouse and keyboard.

Anyway, My Iphone's (3G 8GB) WiFi stopped working too, the rest seems fine.
I've updated to 3.2 and reset everything, I also did the hard shutdown holding home and lock buttons.

I tried other wifi acces points instead of just my router and none worked, my pc has an additional wireless card and that one works perfect with both WiFi signals.

This can't be a hardware problem since there are a lot of other people having the same problem.

Apple, Please fix this problem in the next update (3.0.3) I don't want to use 3G all the time when I have 50 Mbit/s internet available at home.

Add me to the list. My problems began just after upgrading to 3.0. Went to an Apple store, where they replaced my phone with a refurbished model right away. Everything worked great until I upgraded to 3.0.2 last week. Now I'm back in the same boat. Either it can't find any networks at all, or if it does find my home network it will connect for a few seconds, then revert back to 3G. This is really a pain in the neck. How can they not have a fix by now or at least a statement acknowledging there's a problem so at least we know they are working on it??

Got sick of waiting so contacted O2 who put me onto Apple. They talked me through some checks but in the end they say I need to send it of for repair/ replacement. Unfortunately it seems I updated my phone on the day its warranty ran out! The nice people in America found pity on me and decided as a one of gesture I can have a repair / replacement. Which is kinda good but they also state that "firmware upgrades are purely optional and its up to the user whether they decide to upgrade or not" Had it also displayed a tick box at the upgrade stage that stated "Do you realise by downloading this ""upgrade"" we will screw your Wifi up well and good" I would have chosen the No Thanks option!!!!
Well nissed off now I will be without it for 2 weeks. Wonder how responsive O2 are going to be when my contract is up for renewal??? I was considering the 3GS.

I'm a little confused now. I had reported the other day that I was having exactly the same problem as everyone else, couldn't get a wifi connection even though it looked like I had one (got that 169. address etc).

However, I later discovered that my laptop wouldn't connect either. So I completely reset the router (power cycling didn't help) and setup wifi again on it and lo and behold, my iPhone started working again.

That's one heck of a coincidence but I am up and running again. Completely resetting your wifi router was one of the suggestions from Apple which I had ignored thinking "nah, that couldn't be it". But it was!

Thanks dhjdhj for posting your success.

I am not associated with Apple other than as a consumer I have subscribed to a number of their products.

If common sense is to prevail what would be really be helpful when publishing an issue in this forum would be to give the readers details as to your environment this would be of considerable assistance not only to those who have a problem and need to identify the point of failure but also Apple who is probably plugged in to what is being said about them and their product on what is after all their owed and administered web site. To date I have had no experience with Apple Censoring my input.

Consider.... is it reasonable to tell Apple that your car won't start but not tell them what type of car it is and the environment in which it is required to perform. Many in this thread have asked to be put on the list my guess is that is a list of persons that have provided insufficient information and therefore are not capable of being assisted either directly or indirectly.

I have two iPhones both at 3.1.2 both of which upgraded without any issues and are working perfectly and this is the environment in which they perform.

I purchase product based on it being an established and known product in the market place, its reputation, performance, reliability, compatibility, technical support and then price otherwise you pay your money and take your chances.....

Of no particular importance to the iPhone issue but as a demonstration of things that are fit for the purpose for which they are intended I have just installed a Wii which straight out of the box WiFi connected to the Internet via the DLink Router absolutely issue free. The only information the Wii asked for to establish connectivity was the WPA2 encryption key.

I agree with you adnixon, and I also mentioned this a while back. However, you are much more thorough than I, and I wouldn't know where to look to give the type of info you mention, apart from the obvious Apple stuff!
When it comes to describing my environment, all I can say is that I live in the mountains!!!!!! (joke)
I have brought my phone in to the local At+T equivalent which happens to be 1 hour 1/2 away from where I live, and am waiting for an answer.
gdday!

Add me to the list. I have model MB704LL, OS 3.1.2 (7D11). Wi-Fi has always been great but became unstable with a previous upgrade (3.1), but it is totally messed up with 3.1.2. The only way I can get on my home network is to remove security - and even then it's tenuous. And while I will try the router reset, I, too, have the "nah, can't be" attitude since Wi-Fi is now bad everywhere. My iPhone finds networks, but it just can't stay on them (and the laptop works fine on Wi-Fi at home). Since I've tried most everything, my remaining choices are:
1) Reset the router
2) Wait for the next release and see if there is any improvement
3) Try to reload the OS and/or go deeper than restoring the phone
4) Get the phone fixed / replaced (one month left in warranty) - but I'm still not convinced it's a hardware issue...

*I am curious if the phone update and the service provider update are having issues? I tried updating without the service upgrade and still no improvements*
*the Wifi still scans but cannot find any networks.*
