No Wifi after iPhone 3.1 upgrade

I upgraded my iPhone 3G to the 3.1 firmware on Wednesday. Since then, my phone can't see any wifi networks. I've tried to do a restore twice, as well as rebooting the phone a couple times, and it hasn't helped. Has anyone else experienced this and found a fix? It's looking like a trip to the Genius bar 😟

I configured my AirPort Express in n/g/b compatibility mode with WPA2 security. Connected automatically 10/10 times. That's the same result as for my AirPort Extreme. This reiterates that it's not an iPhone hardware problem, it's the software that doesn't know how to properly negotiate with the D-Link.

Note, that my 1st gen iPod Touch connects to the D-Link without any problem.

Hi the iPhone 3G MB489HN was perfect till I upgraded it to OS 3.0. The wifi went off showing in grey colours NO WIFI. Nothing I did made it work. I kept complaining to Apple and our service provider but on one was even interested because the warranty period had just experied by 4 days and it took me a great deal of effort to get in touch with the top brass and prove that it happened only because of the upgrade. They advised OS 3.1 AND STILL NOTHING HAPPENED. Finally they have replaced it free of cost and given an extended warranty on the new one for three months ... 3G MB046LL. Now I turn on the wifi rarely ... and only when it's required. But it is not only a software problem ... it gets hot and when you cool the phone in the cold draught air coming from a fridge, it begins to work for a while. Can this be caused by the software? It must be caused by the software upgrade but the hardware is in capable to taking the load. It's therefore a design problem and Apple should recall or degrade to the much earlier softwares.

My iPhone 3G worked fine with my home wifi network until I applied update 3.1.2. It continued to work at my office and at the Apple store public wifi network.

The difference?

My home wifi was using WEP (default from Verizon FIOS), my office uses WPA2 Enterprise and the Apple store was not encrypted at all.

I changed my home wifi from WEP to WPA2 and now my iPhone wifi works at home again.

I believe TheSpive is right: the firmware update that came with 3.1 and 3.1.2 caused the WiFi chip to malfunction and probably overheat to the point is ceases to function anymore. There's a funny posting a while ago about putting the phone in the freezer! Anyway, I believe no software update will probably be able to fix it now. In fact, my phone still gets really hot and burns up battery life too quickly.

There's probably a reason why the Google Android is overtaking the iPhone according to forecasts... it doesn't burn your ear off.

I have updated two iPhones Model MB500X and MB496X both Modem Firmware 05.11.07 with the latest version of iTunes installed on a Windows Vista Desktop with all published updates [to date] without any issues. Both pass the test 'fit for the purpose for which they are intended'.

Some history I recently had one of the iPhones replaced under warranty by Apple [stress crack in the back case] with an [brand new out of the box] iPhone that would not connect to any Wi-Fi network. This was immediately replaced with an [brand new] iPhone which works perfectly. The replacement that did not work was at 3.0.1 and upgrade to 3.1 did not remedy the issue.

The next replacement was also at 3.0.1 and immediately connected to the Apple Wi-Fi Network this was upgraded to 3.1 and still connected to the Apple Network. This phone has now been upgraded to 3.1.2 with no issues.

In addition my other iPhone [no issues since new 12 months ago] has been upgraded as and when they have occured without any issues.

For those who have access to an Apple Store/Genius Bar irrespective of whether the phone is under warranty or not should give Apple or alternatively the supplier of the phone the opportunity to remedy the problem.

I have found Apple and their business partners to be more than helpful and my experience to date has been excellent.
