No Wifi after iPhone 3.1 upgrade

I upgraded my iPhone 3G to the 3.1 firmware on Wednesday. Since then, my phone can't see any wifi networks. I've tried to do a restore twice, as well as rebooting the phone a couple times, and it hasn't helped. Has anyone else experienced this and found a fix? It's looking like a trip to the Genius bar 😟

Well some update on my issue today my phone has lost WiFi forever. It was slowly loosing signal due to the upgrade overheating and frying the components now as of today the WiFi has given up and greyed out the option. Which basically means the hardware has stopped working. The Network Reset does nothing in my case like others due to the complete failure of the hardware. It may work shortly for others as it did for me a few weeks back but shows the progress of the issue.

In the UK both the network operator and third party vendor do not want to get involved as its 13 months old and I am on pay as you go and hence bought the phone outright. Thanks Apple!!! and consequently to get it repaired is several hundred pounds for a fault that seems to be inherent in the 3G phone and came about after the upgrades.

Yep lugnuts I have come to the conclusion there is only one way leave it on 3G/GPRS for the time being and replace the phone at some point, disappointing really and a shame ;-( Unless Apple can advise a way to return the OS back a few versions to see if this turns down the heat on the Wifi adapter?????

Apple come on and reply to all these users of your technology!!!!

Thanks for the idea, but this did not work for me. It still took 8 manual attempts to connect to my D-Link. Each time it failed, it reconnected with my AirPort Express immediately. For my iPhone, I'm convinced it's a negotiation problem in iPhone software.

Tried the phone in the fridge wow WiFi option that was greyed out came back but still can't scan for networks ;-( oh well worth a try. Demonstrates a hardware fault - which happened around the upgrade and gives more fodder to the discussions around Wifi component burn out.

ps. I would not recommend the fridge/freezer in case something else breaks and it's not in the manual.

Wow! This seems to be a major issue and I am not sure I even fit in here. Obviously, it is nearly impossible to read each and every entry, but my scan appeared my problem is a bit different. My iPhone immediately picks up my newly installed wireless router, but refuses to permit me to login even though I am absolutely positive my password is correct! I receive an "Unable to join the network" error message even when I am less than 2 feet away!

Nope! That didn't work either. What I did find after resetting is there is no information entered in my phone such as IP Address, Subnet Mask,or Router. Am I able to enter this manually or shouldn't it be automatic as it is on both my desktop Macs? And if I do this is it correct to assume I would simply change the last digit of the IP Address? (e.g. 100, 101, 102 the latter being the iPhone)

Not only does resetting the network settings not work, no other suggestion on this thread or others has helped.

I'm going to wait for Apple to release an update. If they don't do so in a reasonable time, then I'll return the iPhone wasting my time, Apple's time, and since it's under warranty, Apple's money. Not to mention probably resulting in more e-waste going to landfill. Apple knows how to avoid all this.

I had CRAZY battery problems & terrible lag after applying for the 3.1 update but found a BB suggestion (maybe on Apple discussions boards, maybe somewhere else) to restore as New Phone. This fixed all my problems.

My friend just told me he's lost wireless connectivity since his 3.1 update and Reset / Network did NOT help him, but he did an Apple Expert phone call & they suggested he restore as New Phone. He hasn't tried it yet but I'd try restoring as New phone it will work.

You'll have to re-sync contacts, content, mail settings, etc. and you'll lose your history for Star Defense & Labyrinth & such, but its not that painful and I think the only way to re-install the OS.

Tried the Erase and Reset the iPhone back to factory default (wipe everything) as recommended by Apple to resolve the No WiFi (Greyed out) problem that followed after a few months of the inability to find networks. Guess what nothing improved it's still gone..... so I have tried everything and the WiFi adapter is definitely fried after 13 months of use. Ho hum I am off to see if Apple will replace my phone as although its out of warranty the problem started 2 months ago and I would expect it to last longer than that. I will keep you posted on the results.

It appears everyone else is experiencing the inability of finding a network whereas my problem is simply being unable to logon. While waiting for my son after football practice last night I checked to see if I picked up the school's WiFi which I did. Of course, I couldn't logon not having a password, but I can't get on my own network and that is where the problem lies!

*NOW IT WORKS* I just follow the apple tips.

On the device, tap Settings > General > Reset > Reset Network Settings. Check to see if the device now displays the Wi-Fi address or Bluetooth address (tap Settings > General > About and scroll down to Wi-Fi Address or Bluetooth). If there is a Wi-Fi address and a Bluetooh address, then you're done with these steps and you can resync your settings and your media using iTunes.
