No Wifi after iPhone 3.1 upgrade

I upgraded my iPhone 3G to the 3.1 firmware on Wednesday. Since then, my phone can't see any wifi networks. I've tried to do a restore twice, as well as rebooting the phone a couple times, and it hasn't helped. Has anyone else experienced this and found a fix? It's looking like a trip to the Genius bar 😟

I'm sorry Apple...for the first time i'm so disappointed with you. A lot of customers are experiencing Wi-fi problems, since June 2009, and the only thing you are able to do is to create new firmware with stupid functions without solving our problem!!! It's 5 months i'm without Wireless...
The only thing i'm sure is that I'll never buy again an iphone!!!!

Thought I'd post an update on my iPhone saga!

I visited the Apple store on Friday night and basically 'camped' there for 3 hours. Testing the replacement iPhone to its end to see if it would break again. I didn't update to 3.1.2 as I reckon that's the problem in the first place with some versions of the iPhones wi-fi chip revision. Anyway, after all this testing, I finally walked away with a working (And still working now!) iPhone at last! YAY!

I did notice something that was either coincidence or an actual difference on the phones ive had though. The ones where the Wi-Fi stopped working was a slightly lower quality finish to the build and casing. For instance where the camera is on the back, the silver bezel surrounding it was protruding outwards, so when you rubbed your finger over it you could feel it as a sharp metal circle. Also at the bottom the case where speak and microphone it, that was also really quite sharp to touch as well.

My original iPhone didn't have any of these sharp edges, and funny enough the one I've got now also doesn't have them either. So it made me wonder if that's the way to identify the 'newer' batch which have this problem. Its probably nothing of any significance, but i thought it was worth mentioning it.

Hi SteMarley I am picking up my first replacement at the Apple Store on Wednesday hopefully they don't install the newer version O/S or I will ask for 3.0 or 3.1 (hopefully 3.1 is ok as long as I don't upgrade) but as you say could be the batch of phones as well - who knows! I will camp out also until I have tested all the features and run it in. Will take my MacBook Pro along too to upgrade on site I think.

Great news and result for you anyway.
Cheers.

Your replacement should come with 3.1 installed. I wouldnt installed 3.1.2 whatsoever. Its not worth the risk.

What I would suggest though to do, is a 'proper' test - download a TV show from the Itunes store via wi-fi whilst your in the apple store. The bigger the file size the better. This way if the wi-fi 'overheats' it should start to become unstable with this type of usage. (There are some free tv shows on there at the moment so you wont even have to spend money on one.) Tell tale signs of it about to stop working is that the strength signal will start to get smaller, and eventually it will lose the wi-fi. Also, use all the web based apps just to give it a further test.

Not to mention checking the build quality of it - camber silver bezel etc..
Hope you have more luck than i did! Lets hope this is your only visit to the apple store for a replacment!

That is exactly what is happening to me. For several months my phone has not been able to get wifi. Sometimes it can't "see" any wireless, others it sees it and tries to log in, but cannot. My networks at home and the office, or on the road - same story. If it sees a protected network it asks for the password, but then cannot log in. I have several things over 10Mg that I cannot download - what a pain. Hoep there is a resolution.

We got 2 iPhones 3G Sep 08 mine couldn't make a 3 way call (conference call) for a year called (AT&T) & Apple they gave me a run around for a whole year even with my paid extended warranty finally AT&T confirmed it was Apple faulty Hardware and ask me to contact Apple which upgraded my iPhone 3G to software version 3.1.2 firmware a year later after calling the for a whole year on Sunday Nov 1, 2009. Since then, my phone can't see any wifi networks and I still can't make a 3 way call the tech told me everything was fine but did not have time to check it since I had spent all day at the apple store now I can't see any wifi networks I've tried to do a restore many times, as well as rebooting the phone many times, and it hasn't helped. Thank God the 4G is in Chicago thru clearwire maybe it's time to push the clunkers (iphone/3G/3GS) on a side and move on to the 4G...

FIXED!!!

I talked with Apple care. They told me to do a restore through itunes and do it as a 'new phone.' I did it, twice. Nothing except wiping out info on my apps...yes I backed up but as a new phone it only kept the apps, not the info in them.

Called apple back...new phone.

problem fixed... for now!
