No Wifi after iPhone 3.1 upgrade

I upgraded my iPhone 3G to the 3.1 firmware on Wednesday. Since then, my phone can't see any wifi networks. I've tried to do a restore twice, as well as rebooting the phone a couple times, and it hasn't helped. Has anyone else experienced this and found a fix? It's looking like a trip to the Genius bar 😟

My symptoms were wi-fi couldn't 'see' any network with the built in app, but could with 'wifi trak' application. I would let me connect for a short time but then almost immediatly dropped to one bar and then after a few minutes lost it completely. This happened on 'known' good hotspots as well as at home. Interestingly I also lost GPS functionality, not sure if this was related or just a coincidence - I did drop my phone around about the same time so can't be sure really. My phone (3G) was bought from O2 in Aberdeen and I got it the day they were released so is now well out of warranty. We got the new Apple store in Aberdeen last week so rather than take it back to O2 I thought I'd give it a go - armed with the knowledge that I was not alone with the WiFi problem. I booked a Genius slot and told him the problem - he then asked if I'd done a full restore (which I hadn't) and suggested that I go home and do that. I explained that I would like the phone fixed or diagnosed now and queried whether he could do one there and then. After a bit of discussion he reluctantly agreed (in his defence he was finished work in 15 minutes and I think wanted to see it through which he estimated would take around 30 minutes). He did mention that a repair out of warranty would cost £££'s and asked whether I had O2 insurance (I don't) but I said that I didn't think that it was a problem with the phone since it was working perfectly (in fact better than my mates new 3GS) until the 3.1/3.1.2 upgrades. I also said that I thought it wasn't unreasonable to expect a phone to last longer than just over a year. A few minutes later he came back and said that they were going to replace my phone FOC....!! I was a bit taken aback because I was expecting a bit of a battle, but not so! There isn't a clue in the document I got other than a line to say that the 'issue was verified)- as in "WiFi and GPS not working, it failed after software update. I think if you go in and are quite firm that it failed after the software update - they will replace the phone without question, even if it is out of warranty. I was prepared to make a bit of a fuss, but needn't have worried. I was pretty impressed by the Apple store.... here's hoping I don't have to test it again!! PS. It's got 3.1 (7C144) installed for all you geeks.... I haven't had the balls to upgrade again!!

I had the same problem. After upgrading to 3.1.2 I lost the wifi. It was not even detecting any signal. I did the Reset Network Settings and nothing, still no WiFi. So I don't know why I decided to do it again. And the second time worked. I don't know if I was lucky but seems that doing the Reset Network Settings twice solved the problem for me.

I'm having the same problem after updating 2 iPhone 3Gs and 1 3GS to OS 3.1.2. They will only connect to the WLAN if I turn the D-LINK router from invisible to visible. Then everything works again. Definitely a problem with the iPhone software not the router. I had no problems with the previous OS.

I'm glad to hear this resolved your problem. My D-Link is fully up to date but the problem persists. There is one class of wi-fi problem related to negotiation of the connection. We both experience that.

Your issue was fixed with an update so that the iPhone can negotiate a connection. In my case, I can connect to the Apple Extreme and Express, but not the D-Link. So does that make the D-Link the problem and the iPhone blameless? No. My iPod Touch can connect every time and so can any and every laptop that has been in my home. The iPhone is fussy about how it negotiates the connection when other devices aren't. I say the iPhone is the problem.

It may very well be that the iPhone is implementing the negotiation standard to the letter (I'm speculating since Apple has remained silent, as usual). But there's an old saying on the Internet, "Do you want standards or interoperability, make up your mind." The correct answer is interoperability.

There's another saying, "Be conservative in what you send but liberal in what you accept." That too facilitates interoperability.

And that is precisely why at least some of the wi-fi problems are Apple's problem. Virtually every problem analysis strategy starts with the simple question, "What has changed since it was working." In the case of the far too numerous people who immediately lose their wi-fi after updating then the answer is pretty simple, "The update."

The update has taken working hardware and bricked or crippled the wi-fi functionality. It's long, long overdue for another update to restore functionality.

I have a DLink DIR-655 which did not work with iPhone until the Firmware was updated by DLink. Because of the symptoms I exchanged emails with DLink support who responded that an update to the Firmware was soon to be published. The DLink firmware update resolved the issue. Perhaps Apple and DLink need to be encouraged to consider or better still co-operate in resolving the issue. It does not matter what the technical reasons are as to why it does not work or who might be responsible for it not working what it needs is both organisations to be encouraged to focus the appropriate resources to make it work. If I was Dlink I would be most unhappy for it to be reported that my equipment did not work or might not be compatible with iPhone irrespective of where the problem fell. Personally I would give Dlink the opportunity to comment. My experience with their support has been nothing but exemplary.
