I'm having the same problem. Original iPhone, 3.1 and snow leopard. My phone syncs fine, but iPhoto does not recognize the phone. I don't have any pictures that were saved from other sources.

When I first upgraded to snow leopard, my canon xti was no longer recognized, though loading pics directly from a memory card reader worked fine. That has since been resolved, but now can't load pics from iPhone.

Well, it suddenly started to work and I have no idea what I did. I did multiple syncs in a row--when my phone was connected, I went into the photo section of iTunes and unchecked the sync photos option. Did a sync like that once or twice and then suddenly iPhoto was recognizing my phone again. Very strange.

If you told them about it then they know. The more people who tell them then the more attention they will pay. The problem is that it doesn't affect everybody - for instance, I don't have the issue - and some folks have managed to solve the problem using some of the things mentioned in this and other threads. As for what they plan on doing you'll need to ask Apple. As I’m sure you recall from your careful reading of the Terms of Service, this is a User to User forum. Apple aren’t here. They don’t promise to read anything here. That's why I suggest using the Feedback route. They do read that.

In general Apple don't make announcements to the effect that they recognize something as a bug.

I have the same hazzle as well, my iPhone 3G does not show up in iPhone...
...for a while!
After a couple of minutes it does show up, but it takes forever to even get a preview of all the images. the more images i have in the phone, the slower it seems to get. but at least i got it back on iPhoto.
Apple does recognize the bugs (i had some experiences on a QA level with Apple), but does not necessarily sends this out to the public.
My guess is that they will fix this soon. Whenever i have sent a help desk request, i got an answer and a reasonable solution within 48 hours, to try that!

Just to clarify:

When I plug in the iPhone via USB, iTunes auto-opens and syncs. Under the Photo tab, it is checked to sync with iPhoto.

Until recently, as I stated, iPhoto used to ALSO auto-open and the iPhone would show up as a device and I would be able to browse the photos on the iPhone. Now, iPhoto will not auto-open and when I open iPhoto, the iPhone does not show up as a device anymore.

So there are two issues - iPhoto doesn't recognize the iPhone when it is plugged in and iPhoto does not see it as a device when I open it.

How about this?

I switched the sync cable to the other USB port and moved my wireless mouse dongle to the other (flip-flopped them) and now it all works like it used to...

Huh?

EDIT: And then it didn't after unplugging and replugging the iPhone back in. BUT...the iPhone shows up in iPhoto if I manually start up the program...

Huh?

amen. i deleted pics in my camera roll that were saved directly from an email from my iPhone.
and plugged in, now it is detected by "image capture" and "iPhoto".

more info below:

at first i deleted some of the pics that i believed to have been the culprits, e.g. - i had a picture that would remain blurry for a couple of seconds before it showed up clearly since i figured it may have been due to the high quality so after deleting only that one, i plugged in and no luck.

then i deleted a few copied from screen capture, plugged in, still my mac wouldn't recognize a photo-playa!

then i came across a batch of pics copied from an email that a friend sent me. he took these pics with a pro camera and emailed them to me from which i saved by holding the pics and selecting "save image" - so after two failed attempts, i deleted ONLY that batch of pics and plugged back in and sure enough - my iphone's camera was detected.
