Querstion about iTunes U on iPod Classic

I was just wondering why there is now a section on iTunes for iTunes U but not on the iPod?

They obviously updated the software on the iPod along with iTunes because two new playlists were created for iTunes U (instead of having it's own section on the iPod like Audiobooks and Podcasts have). The two playlists are for audio and video, but why aren't they all together on the iPod like the Podcasts are?

In fact, the iTunes U lectures I have WERE podcasts before I changed them with the new iTunes U Media Kind selection thing and the audio and video lectures were all together. I just don't get why they did iTunes U differently than the other sections.

Hi Joe, welcome to Apple Discussions.

Making a playlist for the iPod is the easy part. What I also want and would expect to achieve is separation. Podcast files don't show up in Music or Movies. Why should iTunes U be any different? In the end after removing the files, setting media kind to Podcast and resyncing I have been able to tidy the iTunes U files away into the Podcasts section, but ideally the iPod should be updated with another menu item or iTunes should rearrange things for you on the fly and let you know that's what it has done with them. It's not really much better on the iPhone and that has an iTunes U icon.

Update

Just downloaded the new firmware V.2.0.4 for the latest model iPod Classic which introduces a new iTunes U section into the iPod's menus. Seems to work just as would be expected.

No sign so far of an update for older classics, or the iPhone which has an itunes U section, but still produces unwanted duplicate listings in the Video area.

I don't see anyone mentioning this prob;em specifically, so I'll throw it into the discussion: iTunes U runs fine on my computer, and iTunes (the music anyway) syncs just fine with my iPod, which is a Classic 160GB I just bought (in early March 2010). My iPod Classic 160GB Main Menu does not have an iTunes U option. When I go into the Main Menu Settings, I find "iTunes U" as a main menu option. Even though there was a check mark next to it, it did not appear on the Main Menu. I have tried unchecking it and re-checking it, and still iTunes U does not appear on the Main Menu. Without "iTunes U" appearing as a choice on the Main Menu, I don't see any obvious way to access anything from iTunes U on the iPod. So...Does anyone know how to (1) make iTunes U actually appear as a Main Menu option on the Classic 160GB after it is checked, or (2) how to work around the problem to see iTunes U files even without it being on the Main Menu?

This only works on newer iPod classics. I have an older 80g classic, and iTunes U items won't sync at all. However, you can trick the system by changing the media type to Podcast. Then the file will sync just fine. The only problem is that it will disappear from your iTunes U list. However, it will appear instead in the podcast list, from where you can "Subscribe" to the podcast and all the iTunes U items come into your new podcast list. Very strange. Since iTunes U files do indeed sync if you change the media type, it would seem easy for apple to modify the software to make it work for iTunes U.
