Open and Save Dialogs Slow to Open and Populate

In all of my apps, the Open and Save dialogs have become very slow to open and populate since installing Snow Leopard, when the machine is connected to a Windows server. Disconnecting from the server solves the problem; reconnecting causes it to reappear.

This only happens on some of my machines, and not others

Any thoughts on what this could be. The delay is significant (about 10 seconds in all).

Same problem here on a Mac Pro w/Snow Leopard. No problem on MacBook Pro w/Leopard. Both are connected to a router, but no server involved.

I've got the same issue on my MacPro late 2006. File Dialog boxes are extremely slow to load. 10.6.2 didn't help. I wonder what's going on...

Same issue here. But I find that to speed it up you can switch to another task and that seems to activate it.

Update (to confirm that I haven't just fixed this and left): this problem persists, with the same pattern: some machines have it (consistently) and some don't (ever). All are on the same network and have the same software installed.

AHHHHH. This is driving me crazy. I'm having the same problem. It's not a memory issue... I have 12gig. I haven't ever really noticed this problem and then all of the sudden it's every application and every single time I try to open or save as.

Does anyone have a clue on this? Resetting the launchServices did nothing for me.

We are hearing from many users having the same troubles, the trick to leave the application for short (bringing another to foreground), and we heard, that in one and the same office some machines are ilk in this sens and others not.
What does A. say?

Question for you guys.....

Are you all using Smart Folders in your Finder sidebar? I had this random thought that each time I opened a window or tried to save something it had to load the query to run the smart folders. That doesn't really make sense because I would have thought the query would run when clicking the folder.

Either way... I did this, restarted my computer and now I'm back to normal speed.

So odd.

Thank you, Roy, and ray, posting ways. And all the others, posting their troubles.
I used smart folders (Intelligente Ordner in german) by default and was surprised how useful this is, however, every thing his his price.

Now I disabled some points in this and are to say: The dialogs are as fast as starting with Tiger.

Have fun wherever you go and have nice experiencies with search function,

Wow, I agree with jpfour. I opened the finder prefs and unchecked all the "search for" smart folders. Voila - problem solved! You try it and let us know.

I don't know if some of you guys are having other issues, but I'm on day 2 on my Mac Pro since disabling Smart Folders... and every app, Finder, etc all open & save immediately. Back normal. Thank God!

As I said, disabling Smart Folders does not fix the problem.

That was the first obvious thing to try and I disabled them on the machines that were having the problem and enabled them (many) on machines that weren't. The former still had the problem (and still do, months later) and the later didn't (and still don't).

Might be worth a try:

Use Font Book to resolve any font problems - for instance Duplicate Fonts. There's a "Resolve Duplicates" command in the Edit menu.

I have found this a solution when Safari was dog slow in opening a new Tab and a couple of other slownesses in the OS.
