Need Canon Color image runner C2880i driver for snow leopard

I installed Snow Leopard in my MacBook and Mac Pro at work and i have installed them first to check out thebugs before before installing on anyother machines. To my horror.... i can't print. I have a Canon Color image runner C2880i and i can't seem to find drivers that work with Leopard....I have followed all directions and spent much time with apple support...downloaded Canon drivers and software again to be sure I had the latest and still no success. Does ANYONE have a link to get me to the drivers that i need to print off my machines. Please help. I need to start cooking for my new years dinner!

Hello Vinton and welcome to Apple Discussions.

With the iRC2880i there are a few workarounds to get printing with 10.6 while we wait for Canon to release updated drivers.

1. If the printer has support for PostScript you can install the Canon PPDs. This is better than using Generic PostScript for the printer model as it will give you the majority of finishing functions the full Canon PS driver provides. Note however that a printer queue using the PPD does not work with the Department ID function in the copier. If you are using this function then I suggest you turn it off for printing or install the UFR2 v2.00 driver mentioned in point 2.

2. Use the Canon UFR2 v2.00 driver. If you install this driver but select the 'Canon iRC3080/3480/3580 UFRII' in the print using menu, this will get you printing also on 10.6. Some people have reported issues using this driver with their Canon MF printers, but I haven't had any major issues when printing to our iRC3380 - which is the big brother to the iRC2880.

3. If you have the optional imagePASS-J1 fitted to the iRC2880, then EFI have posted an update tool that will let you use the current 10.5 driver on 10.6. You can download updater this via this link.

Hope this helps you. Please reply if you have more questions.

I have seen this error appear with the EFI print drivers but not with the Canon drivers. Can you confirm the name and version of the print driver you have installed.

Do you know if the iRC2880 is using the internal Canon printer board or does it have the external imagePASS-J1 print controller. This is a white metal box that hangs on the back of the machine.

Thanks for that. The info looks like a Windows test page and it does show that the PC is using the Canon board PostScript driver. So you should be able to print using the Canon PPDs from the Mac. Therefore the steps to follow are;

1. Download the Canon PPD Installer v2.70 or later. You can get v2.70 from the Canon Au web site via this link

http://www.service.canon.com.au/drivers/files/ir/macppdv270.zip

2. With this driver installed click to Add a new printer queue. Select IP > LPD for the protocol and input the IP address of the printer, which according to the Windows test print is 10.1.3.101. Enter a queue name of LP and in the Print Using menu, change to 'Select Printer Software' and then type 2880 in the search window. This should show you 'Canon iRC2880/C3380'. Select this and click OK then click Add to create the printer queue. Now try printing.

3. If the print job leaves the Mac print queue but doesn't print on the iRC2880, check if Department ID is enabled on the copier. This will normally require you to enter a ID and password to be able to access the copier screen to copy. If this is enabled then this will stop you printing from the Mac using the PPD.

A temporary solution until Canon releases an updated driver would be to try the Canon UFR2 v2.00 driver which I mentioned in point 2 of my first reply. Or, you can modify the Department ID settings in the copier to 'Allow Unknown IDs'. This will let you print from the Mac until a Snow Leopard PS3 driver is released.

I have the same problem. canon ir c2880i setup as a network printer. Ive tried every driver in UFRII2.0 and the canon PPD2.7 drivers. I installed each of them using every method within the GUI. When i use the "more printers" method and enter the ip of the printer, click add, nothing happens, no printers show up in the list. Any other method, and the printer prints, but its 2 pages of garbage and another 16 blank pages.

You don't use More Printers with the new UFR2 v2.0 driver. You need to add the printer via IP > LPD. You then enter the IP address of the iRC2880 and a queue name of LP. Then in the Print Using menu, you browse for the 2550, since the 2880 is not listed as a supported model.

Note the PPDs will only work if the 2880 has PostScript. In some regions this is an option, so you may find your machine only has support for UFR2 and PCL5c, thus the PPD method will not be an option for you.

Hi there jdkist1.

Since none of the above has helped then I will need some more information from you regarding the configuration of the C2880.

The first important piece of information is what print controller the C2880 is using. There were two options in Australia and most likely in your region also. There is the internal Canon printer board and the external EFI (Fiery) imagePASS-J1. The J1 is a white metal box that will be hanging on the back of the C2880 and will have two cables connecting to the machine and one that connects to the network socket.

If you are still not sure what you have by looking at the machine, then type the IP address of the printer into your web browser. You will either see a picture of the C2880 or a picture of the J1 with a Fiery logo in the top right hand corner of the web page.

If you have the internal Canon printer board, then we need to determine if you the board supports PostScript. Again, using a web browser, type the IP address of the C2880 into the address line to open the copiers home page. When the page appears, down the left side will be a series of buttons. Click the 'Add. Func.' button and then in the new menu select Custom Settings. With the Custom Settings page now displayed, on the right hand side will be a heading of Printer Settings. If you don't see the heading/link 'PS' and only see 'PCL' and 'UFR II', then you don't have support for PostScript so you will have to use the Canon UFRII v2.00 driver.

You can download the Canon UFRII v2.00 driver via this link...

http://www.service.canon.com.au/drivers/files/ir/osxufr2v200.zip

Note that this driver does not have the iRC2880i listed as a supported model, but it does have a Generic iR C UFRII model and in testing to our iRC3380i, a slightly faster version of your iRC2880i, this worked fine for me.

The last thing I need to mention is Department ID. If you need to use an ID with password to copy, then it is likely you need this also to print. Can you confirm if you are using Dept ID, as there are some extra steps that would be required.

Hope this helps you.

Thank you for your help.
Let me respond as you laid it out for me.
First: I believe that it is NOT the J1, no white box is hanging off the back.
I tried typing the IP address as directed and get the message that Safari can't open the page.
If fact, this same page is a bookmark on m Safari, and using that gives me the same message - meanwhile other surfing is possible - these pages will not open.
This is curious to me, because it opened before.

I think it is PS, but not sure.

In reading these posts yesterday, I download both the Aus. and US UFRII drivers - the one from Aus. is 2.00, the one from the US was 1. something.

We don't use ID on the copier.

Please know that I appreciate your help.
I have some deadlines for Sunday, hopefully with your help, I can be printing before too long.
Thank you, again.

Also, I can't find AppleTalk - in the past, before updating, the copier would inform me that AppleTalk needs to be turned on. Once doing that, I could print.

Please help!

Thanks for the replies.

AppleTalk has been removed as a protocol with Snow Leopard so we will have to get the IP address working on the 2880. To do this, you will have to use the copiers control panel.

So, on the copier, press the Additional Functions button next to the touch panel. Then on the touch panel, press System Settings then Network Settings.

You should now see TCP/IP. Press this entry and then the IP Address entry. This will show you the currently set IP address. Is this the same as the one you were using previously? If not, you can select it and change the address using the keypad on the copier. Once you have the address set, you will need to exit out of the menus and hold down the Power button until a message appears to shutdown/restart. Once the copier has restarted you can try to connect to it again via Safari. If that all appears to be going again then you are ready to add the network printer queue again.

To add the network queue, select IP > LPD. Then enter the IP address and a queue name of LP. Then in the Print Using menu, choose Select Printer and then type Canon. You should see the 'Canon iR C UFRII' entry. Select this and Add. Now you are ready to try printing again.
