Gmail in Apple Mail 4 (Snow Leopard)

Having major problems setting up my Gmail account in Apple Mail 4 on my new Mac Book Pro Snow Leopard OS. It just won't connect to the Gmail server. Anyone else having this problem? Anyone know a way round it?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.1)

Same thing happened to me. All was fine until a couple of days ago when the home computer (Snow Leopard) stopped syncing IMAP Gmail, though I could send. And yesterday, my iPhone stopped syncing IMAP Gmail. After resetting and reconfirming server names and passwords, I found this thread and the Gmail 'known issues' page. Apparently Google is working with Apple on this.

"My account has been locked out for exceeding IMAP bandwidth limits when using Apple Mail on the Snow Leopard OS

This is a known issue for users of Apple Mail on the Snow Leopard OS. We are working with Apple on a resolution to the issue. In the meantime, there are a few workarounds to reduce the likelihood of hitting the bandwidth limit:

1. Do not sync attachments.
2. Reduce the number of folders you sync by using the Advanced IMAP Controls lab in Gmail.
3. Close your email client when you are not using it."

Hi all,

For POP accounts only, I have just solved this problem on my 2 google mail acc's.

Click on new acc in Apple mail, enter incorrect details like mail address wert@sfdg.com with the password as any thing you like, click create. It will then search for what it cannot find. but the window that comes back is headed POP account, you can then proceed to enter your correct details. Just make sure your SETTINGS on the Google site under " POP and Forwarding" are set as IMAP disabled and POP as enabled including past mail.

Yes, I had problems with Mail and Gmail after installing Snow Leopard. This is how I fixed it:

1) Under all accounts (under the preferences section), go to the ADVANCED tab. Make sure SSL is checked and port 993 is used. Authentication: Password.

2) I clicked back on the ACCOUNT INFORMATION tab, and at the bottom you will see Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP): click on that and choose EDIT SMTP LIST SERVER LIST.

3) For each account, make sure USE Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) is checked. Under AUTHENTICATION, choose password. Then enter your user gmail username (without the @gmail.com) and then your password. If you are using gmail as a mail app for another email host, then enter the full email address under User Name, and then type in your password.

After doing this for each account, I finally got Mail 4.0 (Snow Leopard) to work with Gmail accounts. If this is done correctly, all accounts should work fine and can be confirmed with the Connection Doctor.
