You have may have to upgrade your iWork to the latest version, yours is a little old now, but definitely upgrade Snow Leopard to v10.6.2 using the *Combo updater:*

http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosxv1062updatecomb o.html

There is a bad font (Hoefler Text) in SL that is causing the problems.

The Combo updater will fix that, not the regular software update via Preferences.

I'm having similar problems. I think my goof-up was taking all the apps out of the iWorks '09 folder and then probably trashing the empty folder a few months ago. Never had a MS Word doc to open just then. And of course I'm running Snow Leopard!!!

Is there a way to restore the folder through a download? I did install the combo updater as suggested here but do you have to run it after installing it and if so... how? BTW, all my iWorks '09 apps work just fine, I can create new docs, but I can't open one that was emailed to me yesterday. Lucky I had a NeoOffice still installed.

Peggy... You're a saint for helping us all. OK, before creating a new folder I did a search and found the empty folder. So I dropped all three back in, opened pages and rather than starting a new document I tried to open the MS Doc file on my desktop. No dice... in fact I got nasty error and it was automatically sent to apple. So something is still not right.

Are there any specific instructions for using the combo updater?

Hi,

I just struggled with the same problem for months ... to no avail. I was just sure that the error comes from the user account, because Pages was working perfectly from all the other user accounts on my Macs.
I noticed that the same error occurred in/var/log/system.log each time I opened Pages:
Jan 22 16:28:44 PowerBookG4-17 Pages[354]: * -[NSCFString characterAtIndex:]: Range or index out of bounds

A lookup on this particular error brings up a thread in the Apple discussions here:
http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6019336&#6019336

The I took a look at the System Preferences -> International -> Formats tab. Bingo: I had a custom choice selected. I reverted back to a standard choice (in my case= French->Belgium after ticking the "Show all regions" selector box) as described in the thread hereabove.

Re-opened Pages and .... it works perfectly well again. Templates open, old documents can be reopened ...

I hope this trick will help you as well as it did help me.

Patrick.
