Mini display port to HDMI problem

How do you tell if the mini display port is the newer version and supports audio. The Audio tab in preferences says HDMI/display port audio. I have moshi adapter from mini display port to Hdmi but when I go to Audio output tab in only the internal speaker option is available.

Similar for Display, there is no arrangement tab.

Just to add my 2p's worth. I have had similar trouble with my output from mini-display but to VGA not HDMI.

Does anyone get theirs to work with a VGA output and not the HDMI?

I feel it also started around the time I did an update on the OS.(At work at the moment so not sure what 10.6.x it was)

It's Apple who's losing money on this, they stop me from using their new Mac Store because of my prioritize towards having my Mac connected to the LCD.

I'd like to state that this is clearly a bug that Apple is aware of, mainly because my Mac refuses to boot up when it's connected to the TV. It's not wrong with my cables, it's not my TVs fault, it's Apple's software **** that causes the whole issue. FIX IT!

I've connected my MBP to my HD TV with a mini displayport to HDMI adapter, but as mine MBP is late 2009 I don't get any audio. What audio cables do you recommend to solve this.

With hope in mine heart I did upgrade but alas to no avail. The screen still flickereth and doeth die. Wouldst that thou hadst not bit the apple of desire in THE FIRST PLACE! Urgggh.

In other words the problem (for me at least) remains. My late 2010 macbook pro STILL will not detect my LCDTV after the 10.6.5 update, despite the 10.6.6 release.

Come on Mac we're waiting...

Problem solved! I was reading through this forum and one posting caught my eye. They mentioned using gfxCardStatus which I am also using. I had it set to "Intel only" so I set it to "Dynamic Switching" and low and behold it worked! Also, a quick way to set the audio out is to option-click the volume icon on the task bar and select the TV as the output device. I hope this helps someone else.

I'd missed the posting about Cody's neat little app that helps Unibody MacBook Pro users configure/switch the graphics Card being used. I installed it from http://codykrieger.com/gfxCardStatus/ and it revealed an interesting phenomenon - I couldn't force the MBP into intel mode while the HDMI + MDP adapter was connected to LCDTV!

I was finally able to switch into intel mode WITHOUT the HDMI + MDP adapter plugged in to the LCDTV, tried again and this time it retained intel (apparently) but STILL didn't detect the LCDTV.

I say "apparently" because with the HDMI cable still plugged in I switched to NVIDIA to try that setting again, but then COULDN'T SWITCH BACK TO INTEL until I unplugged the HDMI + MDP adapter.

From this experience I can only deduce that there is something amiss with my INTEL gfx that started with OSX 10.6.5. Is it just me or are there others here able to try this little experiment with similar outcomes?

Pinzman, have you tried setting the gfxCardStatus to "Dynamic Switching" or "nVidia" before you connect the Mac to your TV? It seems the HDMI output is somehow tied to the nVidia chipset. It won't work with the Intel graphics. Has anyone using a MacBook with Intel graphics only gotten their HDMI adapter to work?

That's the default I've been working with all along. Set on Dynamic switches to NVIDIA. Tried manually setting it to NVIDIA but same same - no different.

I wanted to jump in and see if anyone has any resolutions for MacBook pro models that are pre-2010?

I am very sad to say that today, I just connected a "new to me" 13" MBP to my 23" monitor via a Dynex Mini Displayport to DVI. I had previously connected my aluminum MBP to the DVI connected to my monitors (home office, office, 42" LCD tv, and 100+" HDTV projector). I am used to two screens for work and big screen viewing for HULU. I am getting the same flickering screen!

The only reason I "upgraded" was to be able to use 8gb RAM. Some upgrade!!!

It's not the cable, as my other MBP is flawless. i doubt its the adapter, as I bought 3 of them!

I tried the gfxCardStatus, but the software isn't compatible with my late 2009 MBP.

I'm running 10.6.6.

Id' hate to go back to my non-unibody MBP...or worse, dust off my windows setup.

I am having a similar problem. However, when I plug in my HDMI cable to the mini display port/HDMI converter, the screen on my tv changes to the aurora desk top picture but I can't get it to display anything playing on my computer. Possible solutions???

Oh, if only my problem were that simple! You need to go to display preferences and select arrangement on your primary monitor. Then check "mirror displays". That'll show your desktop on both your computer and your LCD. Alternatively if your displays are showing in your menu bar you can just click "turn on mirroring". If you want to shift your desktop from one monitor to the other rather than mirroring them you simply drag the white bar on the monitor indicator in the arrangement configuration window from one blue monitor indicator over to the other.

I just wanted to throw my 2 cents in here... Same issue happened to me on an early 2010 MBP using Moshi Displayport -> HDMI adapter to both a ViewSonic 20" LCD and Sony 40" LCD. Suddenly one day it just stopped working. gfxCardStatus, and any other possible fixes wouldn't work.

I realized that if I pull on the Moshi adapter towards the rear of my computer while the 2nd display is being detected, then it detects the display every time. So my issue sounds like an problem with the Moshi adapter to me. I haven't had a chance to test another adapter to confirm this though. But just incase anyone is having troubles with this adapter specifically, maybe a variation on this workaround could help you out!!

My new adapter has been delivered last morning, and now it all seens to work perfectly, already rebooted and tested with all possible ways... it just works.

the adapter I bought is the: http://www.kanexlive.com/products/iAdaptV2.html it was a little more expensive than the other adapter (3rd part one) that I had but the issue is gone I think.

I'll try it for a week and I will post if it works or not, but right now it's perfect.

Nothing I read in this topic solved the problem.


Finally I discovered how to fix mine problem:

Reboot your Mac with HDMI into TV and MDP-to-HDMI-adapter into your mac nad you may get screen on your tv when OS X finished booting.

My problems were:
-macbook didn't recognize tv
-changing resolution didn't help
-mirror/no mirror didn't matter

So, try to reboot while everything is connected.

PS: I discovered it won't work if you take the adapter out and reinsert... so you must reboot your mac in the right setup and you may not take the adapter out.
