I have my aluminum Macbook perfectly wired up to my 32 inch RCA HDTV. Nothing will come up on the screen, I've tried detect display, I've tried restarting the computer, unplugging and plugging back in then detect display, turned the tv of and on, but nothing is working. I am currently running Snow Leopard, but when I was on Leopard this process of attaching the TV to the computer just took about 10 minutes of doing desultory processes that I've already described. Any suggestions on how to make it work the first time?
I have a Late 2009 Mac Mini, as well as mid-2009 13" Macbook Pro. When I run video through a DP to HDMI convertor (Belkin), I cannot see the menu bar, and part of the dock is hidden also.
In the settings, the only resolution choices I have are 480p, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p. The thing is, when I use the mini dvi to dvi on the mini, I have no problems. I want to use with tv in living room, but it only has HDMI, no DVI. Anyone else had this problem?
this problem that you have is the OVERSCAN of the TV
if your tv has the option to turn OFF overscan, try to do that.
if not, the only option that you have is to download a program
named DisplayX that can try different resolutions to avoid losing
the menu bar and the dock.
I have a new Early 2010 MacBook Pro, I'm using a Mini(or is it Micro) DVI to HDMI (from Cablesson) to connect my 15" MacBook Pro to a 22" LG TV.
I also get both the no signal and/or static glitchs that appear when using the adapter.
After doing some tests, the issue seems to stem from the NVIDIA Optimus graphics switching that the new MacBook Pro's have (Mine has the 330GT 256mb card), and I have tried all the other fixes which fail to work.
I am using a free app called gfxCardStatus by codykrieger.com which allows you to override the graphics settings to force the machine to use either the Intel or nvidia graphics card.
With all this laid out, I found that by plugging in the adapter which would result in "No Signal" appearing on my TV, I could use gfxCardStatus to switch between graphics card and it would force OSX to properly re-detect the displays and my DISPLAY OUT WORKS.
The nvidia optimus switching seems to be the cause of this problem, as rebooting the MBP with the hdmi adapter would also cause it to start working, but for a restart free method try gfxCardStatus
*I am not in anyway associated with gfxCardStatus or codykrieger.com, just wanted to point that out

Did any of this really ever get solved? I have a 27" imac quadcore i7, and am running a monoprice MDP to a 15' hdmi to my Panny projector (ptae4000u). First day it worked fine. Now, I get the static blinking red screen thing. I tried pretty much everything above that didn't require adding new equipment or replacing a graphics card. Is there really a solution to this?
I have the same problem as well. MBP 13" Late 2009. I use the Mini-Display->HDMI adapter. It worked fine for a couple a months but suddenly it stopped working. This problem occurs both when trying to connect to my tv (samsung hdtv) and my computer screen (also samsung). I guess it's not a hardware error...Apple really need to handle this..
Everything was working fine for me until several months ago when I updated my software. It was as a result of a software update that my MDP to HDMI to my Samsung TV stopped working. I really hope apple is working on a fix for this. Its kind of annoying not to be able to use my TV to watch movies. Thats why I bought the cable after all... Seems like it should be a relatively easy fix...
I have the same problem on one external display setup but not another.
Setup: MBP 17" Core i7, Monoprice MiniDisplay to HDMI cable to a Viewsonic VX2435wm. the screen goes dark randomly, sometimes comes back normally, somtimes full of static and then goes to no singal mode. Sometimes it resolves itself, someimtes I have to disconnect/reconnect the dsiaply cable to bring it back. Very annoying when trying to get some work done.
It was having similar problems with a MDP to DVI adapter + DVI to HDMI cable setup I was using before I got the single cable (The only options on this display are VGA and HDMI). I was getting more pink screens then, though... So I thought it was probably because of too many adapter steps, but it still does it the same with the single cable solution.
When I use MDP to DVI adapter (Monoprice) at home with my Dell Ultraharp 22 display, I never have the problem...
I picked up the mini displayport --> hdmi adapter and am stuck. I have my tv hooked up and it is currently displaying the mac background of space/stars/aurora etc but that's it. It's not displaying my current background pic and everything that I'm doing on the macbook it is not being shown on the TV... its just the background of the stars and stuff. Can someone tell me what the **** I need to do to make the tv mirror what im doin?
Just got an mini display-port to hdmi adapter from hongkong for 99 cents on eb@y works like a charm on samsung 32" first time and every time. Guessing its just luck or the 2010 macbooks don't have this issue.
I would like to connect my MacBook with an external monitor so that I can have a larger screen when I am using Dreamweaver. I don't know what to do or what to buy. I haven't gotten a monitor yet because I don't know what will work best. I also don't know what kind of adaptor and connectors to use. Any help would be very much appreciated.
Just opened up a new topic (read below), before I saw this one. It doesn't seem to be exactly the same problem, since my Mini Display Port to HDMI connection from a MBP to a projector works. But I have encountered the same issues with the connection of a MB to a projector via Mini DVI to HDMI.

"I just bought an Acer K11 mini projector. Tried to hook it up with my MacBook (white, 2008) over a Mini DVI to DVI adapter and a DVI to HDMI cable (HDMI goes into the projector), but the projector doesn't recognize a signal. The same cable/MacBook combination is working fine with my LCD-TV. So I guess the cables are okay.
When I connect the projector over VGA (Mini DVI to VGA adapter and the VGA to VGA cable, which came with the projector), everything is working fine. So this means, the MacBook generally recognizes the Acer K11.
My guess was, that the projectors HDMI port must have some problem. So I tried to hook up my second Mac, a MacBook Pro (2009), using a Mini Display Port to DVI adapter and the same DVI to HDMI cable I used with the MacBook. And I couldn't believe, this worked like a charm.
So, fact is, the Acer K11's HDMI port doesn't talk to the MacBook or vice versa. But TV's HDMI port does. And Acer K11's HDMI port DOES talk to the MacBook Pro.
(BTW, both Macs have Mac OS 10.6.4 installed.)
Of course I'm familiar with the displays preference pane and tried all the settings.
Does anyone have an explanation for that behaviour? Or even better, a solution to make it work?"
Don't know if it helps anyone in here, but at least my problem is solved!
Instead of using the chain Mini DVI to DVI adapter (from Apple) and a DVI to HDMI cable I bought a Mini DVI to HDMI adapter (from LMP) and a regular HDMI cable. Works perfect now!
So I managed to solve the problem in my particular case.
I Have a 32inch LG Tv which i just bought to replace my 19inch Element tv. (ohh yeahh, talk about an upgrade) But I bought the monoprice minidisplayport --> HDMI connector (not adaptor, but litterally the cable with both plugs)
Well, at first the Element 19inch would not work (it just stated that it was "Not Support"..... However, the LG works just wonderfully, so i knew the cable worked, and that there was either something with the tv or the settings.
So far what a lot of ppl have said is that there is some issue with the resolution of the output not being accepted by the tv. This problem is compounded by the inability to alter the resolution under normal circumstances of the ext monitor (the settings pop up on the ext monitor, which if not compatible cannot be displayed and therefore not changed)
THE WORK AROUND!
is to enable the Show Displays in menu bar!!!!!! under the Displays settings. FROM HERE
with the cable connected. Click on the display icon the menu bar and alter the resolution until you find one that works for the monitor!!!!! You should see options for both the Color LCD (your macs screen..... remember i have a laptop) and then another for your TV/Monitor
this worked for me and I hope it works for others!
