Exact same problem, but i am on windows 7. I have let it be for 10 min or longer and very large video files never complete the reattribution. I wind up having to pull the plug on my computer and find corrupted files.

Just as I was moving to itunes for media management... i need to find a way to manage metadata on windows 7 outside of itunes for movies.

Hi,

I have found that you can easily fix this problem by starting iTunes in Safe Mode. Quit iTunes and hold Command + Option and then launch it. Click OK or Continue and then when you change movie metadata it is instant. I have no idea why this works and while it is a small hassle - well worth it since the spinning beach ball takes forever and is frustrating.

Hi all,

I use latest iTunes 10.6, issue still there. One thing I notice is if you rename small file, it is quicker than renaming large file, also when you resync iPhone, it will copy the video again instead of just rename the one already on iPhone. I think iTunes actually make a copy of the file while renaming and treat it as different file. A bit silly I said, but I don't think they bother to fix this issue anytime soon

Well, tha same problem with movies. I'm using iTunes 10.6.3 (the last one) on my mac. Some movies are renamed instantly, but some are freezing. The solution is to wait for several minutes, then it's ok. I've renamed some large HD movies up to 10 Gb size and it's ok after 2-3 min. May be the renaming speed depends on the hardware, I've got the latest top iMac 27.

I am new to Apple as of 4 days ago and have had this problem several times with brand new Imac. Not sure what permanent fix might be, just know software should be fixed. I have worked with PC's for 30 years and have had several instances of hardware failure that has lost or corrupted files, but I have never had a piece of OS software corrupt a file....I'm just sayin'....Had the Imac for 4 days, have had to unplug from wall 15 times to reset and reboot. This advice was given to me by an upper level Apple technician. Never had to unplug my PC....just sayin'

As of today, 1/20/2012, using iTunes 11.0.1 (12) on a MacBook Pro with with 16 GB RAM running OS X 10.8.2, I still have this problem.

When I try to change the name of a video file, it makes iTunes unresponsive.

Apparently, iTunes will start working again - after about 7 minutes for a 1.9 GB video. It doesn't matter if it is an .mp4 or .m4v file. iTunes will still hang for 7 minutes before coming back to life.

The biggest mistake you can make is to Force-Quit iTunes or Restart the system. The file that iTunes is trying to rename is going to be corrupted beyond what can be repaired. If you don't have a backup, then you have lost the file.

This is a huge bug in iTunes.

The corruption of files you are simply trying to rename is unacceptable.

This makes it very inconvenient to rename groups of video files

Somehow, the corruption occurs because perhaps iTunes is scanning the files for some reason. Still, corruption is unacceptable.
