iPhone firmware update 3.1.2 is out! How's it working for you?

Whew relief at last! but 'your mileage may vary'. I am very curious how well it's working. I really hope 'comatose' is a word we can quickly forget.

I was at 3.1 last night and had hopefully my last coma ever. I put on 3.1.2 and it went very smoothly other than for some reason some of my apps lost their data. (i lost hundreds of entries from my 'Lose-it' weight management program (AWESOME by the way; down almost 20# since July).

Since putting on 3.1.2, however, phone not quite as responsive as yesterday on 3.1 (something i can deal with if it never 'goes coma' again), but once in a while it's a pretty long pause, like a 4 sec. pause in the middle of a tapping a word; again if it's a trade-off to have the phone work 100% of the time i can cope with that.

Anybody that does try the upgrade and has a problem, please go through the normal steps of putting on a clean install before 'going ballistic'. Basically, i would recommend doing a backup, putting the phone into DFU BEFORE the first attempt of 3.1.2 (which i didn't do... could be related to the 'stutters' i'm getting right now).

I recommend this method:

1. backup your phone manually (in case it doesn't ask) -> right-click on phone and pick backup
2. Get your phone into DFU mode (search apple help or google; you-tube is has great guides)
3. restore the phone while in DFU. In my experience, the phone is dark while DFU restore
4. activate the phone and 'play around a bit'; i use m.me so i can have my contacts back w/o sync
5. if things are not going well, i would go back to step 2 and re-install
6. test drive for at least a few hours before doing a 1-hr restore from backup (of your data).
7. come back here and give some feedback if it's working (or not).

So.. for me, the summary is: super-smooth 'restore' to 3.1.2 but like a 'moron' (don't take offense, it's a term of endearment for a smart person that doesn't do something the best way by being hasty).. i did just a direct upgrade from iTunes w/o heeding my own advice and DFU the phone first.

So.. i have had a couple instances of 'non response' to things like hitting the home button, the sleep button, but i've had that since 3.0; it was why i upgraded to 3.1 in the first place. I'm very curious about why my 'accidental' install of 3.1 was so darn fast, and i want it back, so over the weekend i'll do a DFU re-install of 3.1.2 if it doesn't clear up with a restart.

No coma yet, but too soon to know if 3.1.2 is the reason. If you have a perfectly working phone at 3.0 or 3.01, i wouldn't bother upgrading, the only 'super cool' thing you'll be missing is the ability to sort your home pages icons in iTunes (super amazing; best part of 3.1 OS for sure). Just wait a week or three to see what others say first!

Oh.. if you really want a clean install.. use a fresh 'user' on your computer to do the update, then just don't bother syncing, and switch back to 'you' before doing 'restore from backup'.

Ok, wish you guys all luck, hope that everybody has a fully operational phone/ipod after this.

This update broke the Auto-brightness. I'm not sure how many people noticed this but I sure did because I use my iPhone in bed at night with the lights off to read the newspaper every night. After the latest firmware update, the iPhone stays super bright and never ever dims like it used to. How can I remove this stupid update?

I would turn Off the a.b. and restart, then turn it back on. Do you have any iZombie symptoms?

Angelpunem - I was hoping that the upgrade to Win7 x64 would help things. I had previously been running on Windows XP SP3 32-bit, and any attempt to upgrade to any iPhone OS beyond 3.0 gave me the same symptoms - it would crap out with an error message, the phone would display the "Connect to iTunes" picture, and the only solution was to manually put 3.0 back onto the phone. I tried 3 different USB cables, I tried iTunes 8.something and the latest 9.

When that crapped out, I tried it on a Vista SP2 32-bit machine. Exact same problems with iTunes 8/9.

When that crapped out, I tried it on our newest Win7 x64 and iTunes 9... same problem. I CANNOT get this stupid phone to upgrade to anything beyond OS 3.0.

And I can't believe that my geographical location has anything to do with it, eh? 😉

Anyways I've wasted SO much time restoring my phone after these botched upgrades that I'm not going to bother until I've read that Apple's fixed it.

Its not, web pages are freezing to the point of not even loading. Apps are crashing right and left now. Apps not able to go online when they do start without crashing. Give me 3.1 back I didn't have the issues that many people it seems had with 3.1. And when I scroll thru the app screens its sometimes pauses for a few seconds, I'm talking like 5 seconds to go to another screen. Not a good upgrade at all.

I experiencing problems with 3.1.2 but most significantly the battery draining.

It is, as was said by someone else, holding charge for around 50% of the time prior to 3.1.2. I mean this was a noticeable change like the next day after updating.

Also I have found that I don't receive WAP coverage (no 3G in my very local vacinity) and visual voicemail has been playing up as a result.

I'm running the Windows 7 (Release to Manufacturing) on a Toshiba Satellite, and had the issue where the updated failed, the laptop tried loading two new drivers for the iTouch (Regular and one other, and recovery mode), and it went to rollback to the previous version of 3.0, but after it came up, it was reset back to factory defaults, and said that it was running 3.1.2. iTunes said that the iTouch needed to be restored from Backup, ran the restore to no avail. The iTouch was completely reset, and nothing was really backed up.

Lost a lot of songs that were purchased through the iTouch, and thought they would be restored via the supposed backup of the iTouch that was taken during the upgrade, and they werren't. Apple allowed me to re-download the last X number of purchases, as the issue was update caused/related.

Still don't know if I'm actually running v3.1.2, but it does take a while to get the 'scrubber' bar to show up while tapping on the Album cover.

After re-synching everything from iTunes on my laptop back on the the iTouch, everything seems 'ok', for now.

I applied the 3.1.2 update to my 3.0 phone last night. The update went smoothly, and I'm happy to report that after almost 24 hours, I have not had any problems. No comas, no battery problems, no problem at all to report.

Battery life seems to be the big issue with 3.1.2. (Happily, it appears that the coma problem is fixed for most people. For those still suffering, I feel your pain.) Here's my experience thus far: When I finished the update last night about 9:00pm, my battery was at 78%. After the update, I did some surfing and checked some weather apps. I then shut my phone off. It was at 72%. This morning when I turned my phone on at 6:30am, the phone still had 72%. Now, at 4:00pm after a day of moderate use (including wi-fi and 3G), I have 62%.

History: I had problems with the 3.1 update. I was losing connectivity to the ATT network as described in many threads on this forum. I tried everything suggested by Apple and on this forum. Nothing worked. I got tired of waiting for Apple to release patch to fix the problem, so I exchanged my phone for one that had 3.0. Wouldn't you know it, the patch came out three days later...

If you have a Sim card installed and 'No Service' displayed then press the power and menu button together for 20+ seconds until the apple logo switches off. During the process ignore the touch slide for a normal power off. Then do a normal power up and immediately a power off using the touch slide. Then power up the iPhone again and the service might be established.

This problem is not an OS 3.1 or 3.1.2 problem, that's just a cooincidence. The problem is the lack of ability to do a CLEAN install.

Find my "crash install" solution I am pretty confident it will solve the iZombie problem at least most of the time.

"This problem is not an OS 3.1 or 3.1.2 problem, that's just a cooincidence. The problem is the lack of ability to do a CLEAN install. "

Could not agree more. I know my iphone worked fine before OS 3.1, but ever since it has not.

The problem is I am 2 months out of warranty and still have 4 months left on my contract. My phone quite probabbly would work fine on 3.0 but does not like the 3.1 versions for some reason. Apple will be trying to fix it and it's easy to miss the odd bug that only affects a small percentage of users.

Even after waiting weeks for a fix the new fix did not work for me, it solved it for some but I must be in the unfortunate even smaller sub group where the problem was not solved, dispte removing all my free apps, hours of reinstallng iTunes, iPhone OS and playing with settings... The coma problem is creeping back in and slowlly getting worse again.

It has given me plenty of time to think about why the problem is there, what could be the cause and why Apple does not want us to use an old version of the OS.

Understanding a bit about software I can see how hard this bug is going to be to track down. From reading all the posts in the 3.1 threads, there seems very little in common between the people having the problem.

But equally I understand how easy it would be to add the function to itunes to allow you to download and install OS 3.0 clean install on the phone, it would barely take a good software engineer half a day to patch itunes with an option to load the latest OS or previous version.

This would be enough for most users, you could upgrade without fear knowing you could always roll back. So this leads us onto why we can't go back...

One obvious reason would be it's easier for developed only having to support one OS at a time. That's not a strong enough reason though, like the it's easier to support argument, you could offer the option with a warning you may have problems or lose support. So why the barrier? The most logical reason I can see is its part of the cat and mouse jailbreak game. If you can roll back its easier to hack your phone. This means that the reason we can't fix our phones is because Apple is in an anti-piracy race it feels it can only win by forcing everyone using their device to only run the latest version of their OS. Now I understand Apple's want to protect their revenue stream from the app store, but I for one will not be spending any more money at the app store while my phone is playing up, in fact I'm regretting the money I have invested so far.

Now if I have to hack my phone to go back to a version of the OS that works I might as well go the whole hog and get some of those grey apps. I'm not bothered about pirated apps, if it's priced right I'm happy to pay for stuff, but some of the non Apple approved free apps seem worth a look.

If Apple gave me an easy option I would not be bothered, but if I have to go through the bother of hacking my phone to get it
useable then it's worthy the little extra effort.

Not decided yet on whether its worth waiting this one out, with Apple you just don't know how long it will take.

What really bugs me is the fact that I did not know this was going to be the case when I bought the phone. Almost every updateable product I have bought so far has had the option to restore it to the same software that was on it when I bought it. Now I have a product I happy with, but the software has gone bad, I can't restore it to the same as when it was working, its out of warranty and I still have 4 months left to pay four it on my contract. Enough to make you frustrated, Any other device and I would not care but this is my only phone and I'm missing calls and unable to make some calls when I want to. I've even resorted to carrying my old iPod around with me so I can listen to music if I can't wake my phone!

So a more open option is looking like a good choice for my next phone. Although with every other phone OS now having a crack at an app store of their own you have to wonder if this could be the beginning of a dangerous trend. If all phones follow Apples lead, if you ever have to restore your phone you may only get the option to use the most recent OS. This in it's self is not bad but it seems unfair to have a shorter warranty than the contract and no way to roll back to the software you had while it was working within warranty.

The one thing I will be doing this weekend will be writing to all the UK and European regulators I can think of. I'm going to ask them to consider bringing in regulation where software updateable devices must give you the option to fully roll back the software to the same state as when you took it out of the box. I think the European Union could well pass something like this.

If you are having problems, would like the option to roll back or are scared of the possibility of an update killing your phone one day then do the same in your local area.

iPhone firmware update 3.1.2 is out! How's it working for you?
