iPhone firmware update 3.1.2 is out! How's it working for you?

Whew relief at last! but 'your mileage may vary'. I am very curious how well it's working. I really hope 'comatose' is a word we can quickly forget.

I was at 3.1 last night and had hopefully my last coma ever. I put on 3.1.2 and it went very smoothly other than for some reason some of my apps lost their data. (i lost hundreds of entries from my 'Lose-it' weight management program (AWESOME by the way; down almost 20# since July).

Since putting on 3.1.2, however, phone not quite as responsive as yesterday on 3.1 (something i can deal with if it never 'goes coma' again), but once in a while it's a pretty long pause, like a 4 sec. pause in the middle of a tapping a word; again if it's a trade-off to have the phone work 100% of the time i can cope with that.

Anybody that does try the upgrade and has a problem, please go through the normal steps of putting on a clean install before 'going ballistic'. Basically, i would recommend doing a backup, putting the phone into DFU BEFORE the first attempt of 3.1.2 (which i didn't do... could be related to the 'stutters' i'm getting right now).

I recommend this method:

1. backup your phone manually (in case it doesn't ask) -> right-click on phone and pick backup
2. Get your phone into DFU mode (search apple help or google; you-tube is has great guides)
3. restore the phone while in DFU. In my experience, the phone is dark while DFU restore
4. activate the phone and 'play around a bit'; i use m.me so i can have my contacts back w/o sync
5. if things are not going well, i would go back to step 2 and re-install
6. test drive for at least a few hours before doing a 1-hr restore from backup (of your data).
7. come back here and give some feedback if it's working (or not).

So.. for me, the summary is: super-smooth 'restore' to 3.1.2 but like a 'moron' (don't take offense, it's a term of endearment for a smart person that doesn't do something the best way by being hasty).. i did just a direct upgrade from iTunes w/o heeding my own advice and DFU the phone first.

So.. i have had a couple instances of 'non response' to things like hitting the home button, the sleep button, but i've had that since 3.0; it was why i upgraded to 3.1 in the first place. I'm very curious about why my 'accidental' install of 3.1 was so darn fast, and i want it back, so over the weekend i'll do a DFU re-install of 3.1.2 if it doesn't clear up with a restart.

No coma yet, but too soon to know if 3.1.2 is the reason. If you have a perfectly working phone at 3.0 or 3.01, i wouldn't bother upgrading, the only 'super cool' thing you'll be missing is the ability to sort your home pages icons in iTunes (super amazing; best part of 3.1 OS for sure). Just wait a week or three to see what others say first!

Oh.. if you really want a clean install.. use a fresh 'user' on your computer to do the update, then just don't bother syncing, and switch back to 'you' before doing 'restore from backup'.

Ok, wish you guys all luck, hope that everybody has a fully operational phone/ipod after this.

I have genius bar said can't garantee that it won't happen again tech support said they doubt that 3 phones would have the same problem the only reason I went to AT&T was for iPhone the onlyreason I bought a computer was for the phone and what makes me mad the most is apple ignoring the problem and not saying we know that there's a problem we are working on it this problem started with their update if all of us knew the problems that would come we never would have updated and their silence on the matter speaks volumes good customer service is the back bone of any buisness I have spent enough and stressed enough to really care anymore in my book right now apple is as bad as Microsoft right now I'll never buy another apple product if they can't fix this problem and I'm not the onlyone with this problem it affects vista as well it's their driver what ever they do to make it stay on a system is the problem.

Have any Windows users figured out what is causing the 3.1 and 3.1.2 updates to fail to install. There are enough WIndows users reporting problems that someone out there must have figured out what's causing the problem.

I have Windows Xp Home running with Vipre virus software and could not install 3.1 or 3.1.2 on my 2 windows machines even after reinstalling Itunes and shutting down Vipre. All other updates up to 3.0 installed without any problems before. In my case the install starts and everything proceeds nhormally until Itunes attempts to install the firmware on the Iphone. At this point the phone is not recognized and the install just hangs.

I was able to successfully install using a macbook.

It sounds like there is some kind of conflict that is causing to the phone to not be recognized part way through the install.

Any ideas????

This update broke the Auto-brightness. I'm not sure how many people noticed this but I sure did because I use my iPhone in bed at night with the lights off to read the newspaper every night. After the latest firmware update, the iPhone stays super bright and never ever dims like it used to. How can I remove this stupid update?

No change for me -- constant crashes - repaved with 3.1.2 last Thursday - started crashing on Tuesday.

I have repaved this iPhone probably 20 times since late August (I had the problem with 3.0). Had the HW replaced once. Have tried every conceivable combination of reinstalls, including running for days with nothing but the basic install (no added apps) and not syncing to Outlook e-mail. Crash...

Time for a Windows Mobile 6 phone???

What is AT&T's exchange policy?

I updated my Mom's iPhone tonight. Her gmail account disappeared from her MAIL app. Tried repeatedly to add it back using

Settings; Mail, Contacts, Calendars; Add Account; Gmail

No matter how I did this, it NEVER CAN AUTHENTICATE PASSWORD

tried adding as other IMAP, tried again using support instructions for POP, checked that both are enabled on gmail.com side in gmail settings, password is correct

No matter what I do, can't add Gmail to Mail app built into iPhone.

MY Gmail account didn't get deleted and works fine. However, I can't add any Gmail accounts to the MAIL APP, tried adding Mom's and tried adding my husband's can't seem to add any Gmail accounts!! Passwords never work!!

steps:

1) of course make sure she can log in at gmail.com to verify username and password.
2) go to settings and [imap/pop] tab
3) disable imap
4) save settings
5) go back to [imap/pop] tab
6) re-inable imap.

i've had the problem half a dozen on the 40 or so g.apps users i manage.. it's very odd, but sometimes gmail just does not 'see' the imap is set as on.. it also.. by the way will be 'on by default' if you connect imap BEFORE web login (to gmail) but opposite is true if first logon with web. I think the internal setting can be opposite of what you see.

in any event, that is usually the first step.

do you use gmail or google apps ? if gapps you need full email address, not just left of @

3.1.2 has reduced the problems a little on my 3G but I'm still getting coma mode, missed incoming calls, lost data connectivity.

I suspect wifi negotiation and Mobile Me are contributing factors. I'm unwilling to turn them off as they're crucial features and I've paid money for the Mobile Me (I'll definitely be switching to Google syncing after this experience).

Installed the 3.1.2 patch yesterday without a hitch. I've been suffering through coma problems since 3.1, so I was happy to see that the patch "fixed" the problem. After half an hour of use I got my first coma. Sweet, thanks Apple. Now that the problem is fixed for some I'm probably going to have to wait a year for this to get fixed.

Any suggestions that don't involve me troubleshooting for hours? I'm past the days of uninstalling/reinstalling and fiddling with stuff until it works - I decided to give up on that kind of fun after Windows 98/Me. I bought this phone so it would work.

OK, now I'm really getting nervous and angry!
What is wrong right now? I udated to 3.1.2 and (besides battery drain) i get a new problem:
perhaps womeone has an answer:

my 3GS was about 35% last night. When I wanted to check my phone (about 10 hors later): may phone was shut off and when i tried to turn it on, it shows me that it needs to be recharged! I donÄt get it anymore! I just had WiFi on and EDGE! No 3G! no BLuetooth! No apps! No alarm! nothing!
ususally 35% is wnough to stay on even if everything is enabled!

iPhone firmware update 3.1.2 is out! How's it working for you?
