iPhone firmware update 3.1.2 is out! How's it working for you?

Whew relief at last! but 'your mileage may vary'. I am very curious how well it's working. I really hope 'comatose' is a word we can quickly forget.

I was at 3.1 last night and had hopefully my last coma ever. I put on 3.1.2 and it went very smoothly other than for some reason some of my apps lost their data. (i lost hundreds of entries from my 'Lose-it' weight management program (AWESOME by the way; down almost 20# since July).

Since putting on 3.1.2, however, phone not quite as responsive as yesterday on 3.1 (something i can deal with if it never 'goes coma' again), but once in a while it's a pretty long pause, like a 4 sec. pause in the middle of a tapping a word; again if it's a trade-off to have the phone work 100% of the time i can cope with that.

Anybody that does try the upgrade and has a problem, please go through the normal steps of putting on a clean install before 'going ballistic'. Basically, i would recommend doing a backup, putting the phone into DFU BEFORE the first attempt of 3.1.2 (which i didn't do... could be related to the 'stutters' i'm getting right now).

I recommend this method:

1. backup your phone manually (in case it doesn't ask) -> right-click on phone and pick backup
2. Get your phone into DFU mode (search apple help or google; you-tube is has great guides)
3. restore the phone while in DFU. In my experience, the phone is dark while DFU restore
4. activate the phone and 'play around a bit'; i use m.me so i can have my contacts back w/o sync
5. if things are not going well, i would go back to step 2 and re-install
6. test drive for at least a few hours before doing a 1-hr restore from backup (of your data).
7. come back here and give some feedback if it's working (or not).

So.. for me, the summary is: super-smooth 'restore' to 3.1.2 but like a 'moron' (don't take offense, it's a term of endearment for a smart person that doesn't do something the best way by being hasty).. i did just a direct upgrade from iTunes w/o heeding my own advice and DFU the phone first.

So.. i have had a couple instances of 'non response' to things like hitting the home button, the sleep button, but i've had that since 3.0; it was why i upgraded to 3.1 in the first place. I'm very curious about why my 'accidental' install of 3.1 was so darn fast, and i want it back, so over the weekend i'll do a DFU re-install of 3.1.2 if it doesn't clear up with a restart.

No coma yet, but too soon to know if 3.1.2 is the reason. If you have a perfectly working phone at 3.0 or 3.01, i wouldn't bother upgrading, the only 'super cool' thing you'll be missing is the ability to sort your home pages icons in iTunes (super amazing; best part of 3.1 OS for sure). Just wait a week or three to see what others say first!

Oh.. if you really want a clean install.. use a fresh 'user' on your computer to do the update, then just don't bother syncing, and switch back to 'you' before doing 'restore from backup'.

Ok, wish you guys all luck, hope that everybody has a fully operational phone/ipod after this.

Apple tech support had me reinstall iTunes 12 times and when that did not work then they had me wipe my hard drive this all started with 3.1 update and 3.1.2 update a family member has 3.0 on her phone and her phone syncs fine on my system it has to be the update and tech support is no help others are having similar issues I have sent apple sync test and system info and still no resolve.

Ok you have eliminated the USB as an issue thats a step forward.

Next question will it connect to an Apple Box [that might mean a trip back to Mr Genius]. If it works in the Apple environment then it wont be the phone if not then it is probably the phone in which case would it not be a warranty issue?.

More thought might it be a USB driver issue have a look at this instalment

Nope does it on an apple box as well they have replaced the phone twice what ever comand or code they give it for the driver for the phone is messed up if I restore it it works fine at first as soon as I take one picture or download one for screen saver boom here it is even tech support knows that it is a software problem but they sofar are unable to fix the problem they told me that 3.1.2 might fix the problem but others are having the same issue but with vista it has to be their soft ware I have eliminated everything else including reformatting my hard drive on the computer they rushed this update to compete with the google phone, the windows phone, and the garmin phone and in the process have messed with their customer base that made their phone so popular they don't want people jailbreaking the phone and I refuse to but if the problem continues for much longer that force people to sell their phone I need a working phone that's why I got this and I worked great now it ***** all because we are at their mercy to update they just need to fix it and fast this will start to hurt sales.

Sorry I meant to quote this.

"My upgrade was a bit rough, but all is OK now. This was my first upgrade that had any rough edges to it; all previous upgrades had worked flawlessly.

The upgrade failed with "unknown error (13)". The iPhone was left powered off.

When I turned on the iPhone, iTunes reported that a restore was required, and I did it. After the restore, I was expecting to be back at 3.0. Instead, my phone was running 3.1.2, but none of my apps or data was on it. However, iTunes recognized it as a new iPhone, and asked me if I wanted to restore from backup. I said yes, and now everything is back to normal."

you seem to have windows7 and 64 bit, that's a new OS not available to the mass market yet. that might be a reason you are having difficulties downloading firmware updates from apple...! maybe you should contact microsoft !
BTW. it's the first posting I've noticed from Canada . We don't seem to be having any problems or we are not aware of this forum..:)

I have visited a genius bar all the socalled genius could do was replace the phone twice have me wipe my hard drive and reinstall iTunes 12 times to no avail have tried my phone on three different computers one mine xppro no dice two had vista again no dice the problem is the update for some reason the drivers for iPhone in windows won't stay and my computer has passed all computer test by geek squad another family member who did not update and still has 3.0 their phone worked fine on my system it's the update plain and simple and after spending 300 for a phone 150 in apps and music I have every right to be ****** so does every one else they can fix this easily and for some reason won't.

'to be fair' to the 'so-called genius', he was presented with an enigma; a non-solvable problem.,

I had my phone 'disconnect' twice (all told in the history of me doing iphones more like 10-15x) WHILE sending the install package; that can't be good!

my guess how the install works is a bit like windows CD install; it puts a temporary package 'on the drive' sets the boot pointer there and boots of a temporary OS so it can replace the real working one.

TWICE now in less than two weeks. i had a 'total zombie' phone that wouldn't respond to anything (4 seconds to wake, NINE seconds to go to sleep.. every 5th letter, a 4-6 second pause with SMS)... anyhow i had an install interrupted mid-way and the follow-up worked flawlessly.

re: xp won't connect; if it won't connect at all, find a friend/family with mac and use the guest account and try to doa DFU install, (i think that part is critical).

WOW (reading follow-up posts) definitely a 10-7 split in the bad-luck dept.. there is something very strange and rubs me the wrong way about the install/upgrade mechanism for iPhone... i've had aboout a 50% success rate with firmware upgrades (faaaaar less if you count the 12-15 failed 3.1 and the first failed 3.1.2... so... I would say to try on a mack to use the 'crashinstall' method that snapped my phone from the jaws of death TWICE now.

you can email me if you'd like my apple id is my m.me email.

if the typing stutters are not just there; other related symptoms:

1) home button doesn't instantly 'wake' computer
2) sleeep button doesn't instally 'sleep' computer.
3) delay to answer call (either button or slider).
4) home button will get you a black screen for a second or four before home page.

if you have those symptoms you don't have coma mode you have zombie mode... a DFU re-install SHOULD fix it, but if it doesn't.. emergency contingency just might. (i only have a small sample of 2x so 100% but not a big dataset).

oh; see The MOVIE to see if it's similar to your hiccups (though i didn't try sms in the movie).
