iPhone firmware update 3.1.2 is out! How's it working for you?

Whew relief at last! but 'your mileage may vary'. I am very curious how well it's working. I really hope 'comatose' is a word we can quickly forget.

I was at 3.1 last night and had hopefully my last coma ever. I put on 3.1.2 and it went very smoothly other than for some reason some of my apps lost their data. (i lost hundreds of entries from my 'Lose-it' weight management program (AWESOME by the way; down almost 20# since July).

Since putting on 3.1.2, however, phone not quite as responsive as yesterday on 3.1 (something i can deal with if it never 'goes coma' again), but once in a while it's a pretty long pause, like a 4 sec. pause in the middle of a tapping a word; again if it's a trade-off to have the phone work 100% of the time i can cope with that.

Anybody that does try the upgrade and has a problem, please go through the normal steps of putting on a clean install before 'going ballistic'. Basically, i would recommend doing a backup, putting the phone into DFU BEFORE the first attempt of 3.1.2 (which i didn't do... could be related to the 'stutters' i'm getting right now).

I recommend this method:

1. backup your phone manually (in case it doesn't ask) -> right-click on phone and pick backup
2. Get your phone into DFU mode (search apple help or google; you-tube is has great guides)
3. restore the phone while in DFU. In my experience, the phone is dark while DFU restore
4. activate the phone and 'play around a bit'; i use m.me so i can have my contacts back w/o sync
5. if things are not going well, i would go back to step 2 and re-install
6. test drive for at least a few hours before doing a 1-hr restore from backup (of your data).
7. come back here and give some feedback if it's working (or not).

So.. for me, the summary is: super-smooth 'restore' to 3.1.2 but like a 'moron' (don't take offense, it's a term of endearment for a smart person that doesn't do something the best way by being hasty).. i did just a direct upgrade from iTunes w/o heeding my own advice and DFU the phone first.

So.. i have had a couple instances of 'non response' to things like hitting the home button, the sleep button, but i've had that since 3.0; it was why i upgraded to 3.1 in the first place. I'm very curious about why my 'accidental' install of 3.1 was so darn fast, and i want it back, so over the weekend i'll do a DFU re-install of 3.1.2 if it doesn't clear up with a restart.

No coma yet, but too soon to know if 3.1.2 is the reason. If you have a perfectly working phone at 3.0 or 3.01, i wouldn't bother upgrading, the only 'super cool' thing you'll be missing is the ability to sort your home pages icons in iTunes (super amazing; best part of 3.1 OS for sure). Just wait a week or three to see what others say first!

Oh.. if you really want a clean install.. use a fresh 'user' on your computer to do the update, then just don't bother syncing, and switch back to 'you' before doing 'restore from backup'.

Ok, wish you guys all luck, hope that everybody has a fully operational phone/ipod after this.

Good to hear that you had a successful outcome. Making sure that you have the latest version of iTunes and a clean system is the first important step. Some other things your readers might like to consider is cold starting the network equipment after the upgrade. Switch off the Modem, Router and leave them off for a few minutes to allow the ISP to release the IP Lease [that is if you have a dynamic connection] then start the modem then the router then the iPhone. I'm at 3.1.2 and it has given me the impression that it is faster, battery life is about the same but the WiFi network signal is at all bars whereas before it was a single bar now there may be no substance to that other than the output displayed has been re-calibrated. Google Earth loads faster which points to my location on this planet quicker than before.

posted in another link, but it is always good to read a positive:

Well, I scheduled an entire day to do the update to 3.1.2. Every update before this has brought misery and pain, and hours on end looking at a dead phone. Also bringing me 2 trips to the "genius" bar for a brand new phone.

I plugged the phone into a computer I had never done an update on and gave it a go.

10 minutes later, my phone was online and working! 🙂

Congrats to the software peeps at apple for making an update that actually went smoothly. At least for me, sorry to all that have not had it so smoothly.

I have seen no issues with it so far. Gonna turn 3g on and see if the battery drain takes place while on a charge.

After reading this post in it's entirety last night I decided to go for it, having not had any previous cattled iPhone updates.

The update took about 15 minutes start to end, and after 24 hours I can report no issues, battery life seems better than with 3.1.1 too (12h+ up time(since charge) and 65% remaining), and faster loading of indigenous apps.

Don't know if it helps anyone, but I downloaded the update in iTunes without installing, then restarted both my Mac and iPhone, then applied the update.

I've not tried a resync after undoing the workaround for my scrambled smart playlists after 3.1.1, will repost result.

First off, thanks to the 4 people I spoke to at Apple support today who tried to resolve the email issues I have been experiencing since the last update. At the suggestion of the support person I first spoke to, I removed my email account from the phone, then restarted, then re-input it. It sort of helped, but it sort of didn't. I still suspect that the update to MMS is the culprit, and I've experienced none of the other issues expressed here. I use this phone primarily for business. My business email account is the only account that has ever been on it. I don't/very rarely use WIFI, I still have 5gb free on an 8gb phone - so the few Apps that I've found useful aren't the root. I am not accustomed to an Apple product being so annoying, and buggy. (The pause while typing seems to be a new intermittent malady.) I seem to be on the right track remedying my problems with it, but if I don't manage to get email working in short order, it's going to derail.

Is there a subscriber with all things Apple Router, Desktop/Notebook, iTunes running the latest version of their firmware/software with a 3G at 3.1 or 3.1.2 who has a Wi-Fi connectivity issue. This information would be useful in assisting all subscribers in their attempts to establish the point/s of failure.

I went straight from 2.2.1 to 3.1.2... The only problem I noticed so far is that Safari would crash after a few replies I make in discussion forums (at least the ones I frequently go to). Other than that, everything seems to be working just fine so far...

Same here...all well, except Safari has started crashing

Not sure that Apple undertakes or is required to support third party hardware or software which thinking about it is of itself a novel idea but I am pretty sure untrue. I personally have had an experience where the point of failure appeared to point to the iPhone but as it turned out a firmware upgrade on my router remedied the problem.

Notwithstanding that for some upgrades have clearly been a frustrating experience. Personally given the environmental variables [Hardware Firmware and Software] of each and every individual I personally am yet to be convinced that Apple universally has an issue [if that was the case millions of users would be knocking down their doors].

If it can be arranged a face to face visit to an Apple Genius - Technical Support or the Apple Re-seller might be in order. The question to put would be something like 'Please show me how to make all the functions on this iPhone work'. When asking that question make sure you are actually talking to the decision maker oh and when you get an opportunity.. say hello to Mr Hubble because for the life of me I cannot remember the name of his programmer or the program manager.

My experience with Apple face to face has been excellent - good luck...

Had the same coma problem, but after attempts of restoring around 6+ times, it worked.

Unfortunately, it's managed to lose all my contacts and text messages which were previously backed up, and now they seem to be lost. Is there any way of retrieving them or am I clutching at straws hoping there is a way to retrieve them?

it will always back up unless you stop it before firmware upgrade; if you didn't get (or dismissed) a dialog asking which backup to use you can right-click on the phone icon and get a list of any available backups.. they are stored somewhere in the bowels of the hard drive, but in YOUR user account i believe... if iTunes doesn't 'see' them i've heard of ways to 'suck out the data' if needed.

i believe the path is: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup.

i use mobile me.. wow has it been a blessing in the past month with (not kidding) 15 firmware installs, possibly more.. as soon as i restart, connect to iTunes, restore 'just the settings' (no data like music/movies/contacts/calendars).. within about 5 minutes all my contacts and calendars are back!>

i also have had good luck.. .my home button was not working properly at about 11 mo... and i went in and the guy took my phone and swapped out the top glass+home button and brought it right back to life! i totally lucked out because somebody had not shown up for genius appointment so i got a 'walk in' visit which is not common; you have to use the website to register (even from the store).
