iPhone firmware update 3.1.2 is out! How's it working for you?

Whew relief at last! but 'your mileage may vary'. I am very curious how well it's working. I really hope 'comatose' is a word we can quickly forget.

I was at 3.1 last night and had hopefully my last coma ever. I put on 3.1.2 and it went very smoothly other than for some reason some of my apps lost their data. (i lost hundreds of entries from my 'Lose-it' weight management program (AWESOME by the way; down almost 20# since July).

Since putting on 3.1.2, however, phone not quite as responsive as yesterday on 3.1 (something i can deal with if it never 'goes coma' again), but once in a while it's a pretty long pause, like a 4 sec. pause in the middle of a tapping a word; again if it's a trade-off to have the phone work 100% of the time i can cope with that.

Anybody that does try the upgrade and has a problem, please go through the normal steps of putting on a clean install before 'going ballistic'. Basically, i would recommend doing a backup, putting the phone into DFU BEFORE the first attempt of 3.1.2 (which i didn't do... could be related to the 'stutters' i'm getting right now).

I recommend this method:

1. backup your phone manually (in case it doesn't ask) -> right-click on phone and pick backup
2. Get your phone into DFU mode (search apple help or google; you-tube is has great guides)
3. restore the phone while in DFU. In my experience, the phone is dark while DFU restore
4. activate the phone and 'play around a bit'; i use m.me so i can have my contacts back w/o sync
5. if things are not going well, i would go back to step 2 and re-install
6. test drive for at least a few hours before doing a 1-hr restore from backup (of your data).
7. come back here and give some feedback if it's working (or not).

So.. for me, the summary is: super-smooth 'restore' to 3.1.2 but like a 'moron' (don't take offense, it's a term of endearment for a smart person that doesn't do something the best way by being hasty).. i did just a direct upgrade from iTunes w/o heeding my own advice and DFU the phone first.

So.. i have had a couple instances of 'non response' to things like hitting the home button, the sleep button, but i've had that since 3.0; it was why i upgraded to 3.1 in the first place. I'm very curious about why my 'accidental' install of 3.1 was so darn fast, and i want it back, so over the weekend i'll do a DFU re-install of 3.1.2 if it doesn't clear up with a restart.

No coma yet, but too soon to know if 3.1.2 is the reason. If you have a perfectly working phone at 3.0 or 3.01, i wouldn't bother upgrading, the only 'super cool' thing you'll be missing is the ability to sort your home pages icons in iTunes (super amazing; best part of 3.1 OS for sure). Just wait a week or three to see what others say first!

Oh.. if you really want a clean install.. use a fresh 'user' on your computer to do the update, then just don't bother syncing, and switch back to 'you' before doing 'restore from backup'.

Ok, wish you guys all luck, hope that everybody has a fully operational phone/ipod after this.

I had the same problem with 3.1.2. It put my iphone in restore mode. Tried 4 times to restore but unknown error and usb/itunes image. I hooked to my laptop to restore and it reset to factory. Put back on desktop to restore backup and it only partially restored my settings. Could not sync or backup after that.

I found that if i uninstalled itunes, then re-downloaded and re-installed itunes, then It would start to sync and backup again. It then happened on my mothers iphone and I am currently restoring hers via remote desktop connection.

Just to add some positivity to this thread:

I updated after having tons of problems with the 3.1 update. The update itself failed initially and I had to go through the restore process but it did eventually succeed and my phone is working again with wifi, 3g, bluetooth, etc all on. Good signal and good battery life. It's back to being the phone I love. I'll try to remember to update if it continues to work well for me.

Hi,

*I have just experienced two days of total frustration* up grading my iPhone to 3.1.2. The problem is now solve and the iPhone is better than it ever was. Much stronger signal.

*Let me explain.* I live in a remote area of Western Australia and our only Internet connection is vie Satellite. When I was upgrading my iPhone to the new 3.1.2, the download came trough corrupted and that put my iPhone out of action. Trying to restore my the iPhone in iTunes did not work either as the new corrupted 3.1.2 had replaced the 3.1 restore version in my users Library/iTune/iPhone Software Updates/iPhone....._Restore.ipsw file with the corrupted version of 3.1.2 and I had to delete the .ispw file mentioned above (please read http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1275).

For the rest of the weekend I was unable (due to satellite dropout) down load the update as it time out. Tried using accelerator Speedy Downloads but it did not help either. My greatest problem with ALL of apple updates is that if you become disconnected all of the download data is lost and you must start all over again. I used 2 Gb trying to download the 306 MB update at a cost of about US$ 50. So on Monday I took my Laptop and drove many K's to the nearest town and download the 3.1.2 update vie an ADSL line connect. Everything now works great.

*So next time I upgrade I want to* try the following. Prior to upgrading copy the .ipsw restore file in the Library/iTune/iPhone Software Updates/iPhone. ...._Restore.ipsw file and shift the copy to another folder either on the desktop or applications or wear ever.

*Therefore my theory is* that if the download updates fails then I should be able to replace the new corrupted ipsw file in the library with my copied ipsw file and restore the iPhone-operating programme back to the original position.

*I have not tried this* as I do not want to drive to Town again if it does not work. Time Machine will not backup the ipsw file. Would appreciate some feed back if anyone tries this.

*Other iPhone problem*. You cannot write or send an email or open MAIL app
without MAIL downloading all of your emails. This does not suit me at all; I may not want to receive an email for business, personal or legal reasons; I may only want to send one, which definable should be my option.

*Apple does not seem to be using a western dictionary*. Manual means Manual and should give me/you (the user) the total manual control over whether or not you decide to download your emails. Other web browsers give you this option. Initially I was blaming the Telephone Company for this and I then paid to have my telephone unlocked but it made no difference. It appears that it is apple who has taken away this freedom of choice.

*Has any one got a spelling package* for Mail or iPhone Mail that allows you to spell check (not as you type) but like Thunderbird that allows you to spell check edit and then send or save to draft. MAIL does not allow you to do this as it sends the email immediately after spell checking and does not give you the ability to edit after spell checking. ?????

Fully agree with Mazdaman whose phone was bricked by the latest update. Same problem here. Had a fully functioning phone before the update...now I have a nice shiny paperweight. Phone froze after update and is stuck in recovery mode and nothing seems to wake it from its coma....have tried every home/sleep combo trick in the book but no dice. Apple Support gave me the same bull about 'water damage' and showed the usual mix of indifference and ignorance. Phone is out of warranty and looks like it's going in the bin unless someone has a radical solution to offer. Have been an Apple devotee for years and have two Ipods, two Powerbooks and an Imac....but this whole episode displays a contemptible disregard for their customers. Anyone selling a Blackberry by any chance?

It's NOT working. I did not experience any problems with the battery before, nor the coma issue, and I have not since the update to 3.1.2 - which is still not allowing me to send or receive emails. (The battery on the iPhone is substandard to begin with, so I won't complain about it any longer.) I suspect the problem is AT&T's new network but, typically, they have been absolutely useless.

_*TK'S 2nd SOLUTION:*_

Oh yeah, I also forgot to mention another problem with ZoneAlarm. Whenever I go to sync music, tv shows, and music videos on my iPhone I run across 2 different problems.

1. The media will sync successfully but is extremely pixilated and choppy/unplayable.

2. iTunes will immediately give me an error message saying something about the disk being locked and un-writable.

Solution:
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -

Once again I shut down ZoneAlarm and restarted iTunes.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -

From now on I'm just going to shut down ZA and then start iTunes instead of wasting hours trying to solve all of APPLE'S stupid problems. I also own a Microsoft Zune player and have never once had a problem rising from ZA.

Hope this solution and my others will help you in your seemingly never ending quest for a perfect iPhone.

I think many of us are experiencing an epiphany moment where things come all together. Bumpy ride for sure, but in my case the phone has never worked as well.

It is "outside the rules" but if you wait a week or two you will be able to find a copy somewhere that has a resumable download. Also; iTunes will erase any out of date ipsw so archive if you want to have one later; of course, you can't normally install older version!

That of course is the documented behavior; it us strange though! Make. Mad there is no.

Only if same or newer than installed.

I would be surprised if tm doesn't back up the file, I ususually set tm to to skip my downloads and cache files so j wouldn't know.

"crashinstall" update;

Phone has a about 120 apps installed but no music or sound yet. However it's never worked better than it does right now; I did not check GPS function yet. Sooooo so far so good. You have an iZombie, the steps I did will likely bring it back to life as it did twice for my 3G.

My upgrade was a bit rough, but all is OK now. This was my first upgrade that had any rough edges to it; all previous upgrades had worked flawlessly.

First I updated to latest iTunes and did a sync, which created a new backup.

Then I upgraded my iPhone 3G from 3.0 to 3.1.2, skipping the intermediate releases. The upgrade failed with "unknown error (13)". The iPhone was left powered off.

When I turned on the iPhone, iTunes reported that a restore was required, and I did it. After the restore, I was expecting to be back at 3.0. Instead, my phone was running 3.1.2, but none of my apps or data was on it. However, iTunes recognized it as a new iPhone, and asked me if I wanted to restore from backup. I said yes, and now everything is back to normal.

I've been on 3.1.2 a couple of days now, and all seems fine. Battery life appears to be unchanged from 3.0.

Hope that helps...
