Problem with iWeb asking for username and password to access my public site

Today for some reason anyone trying to access my site is being asked for username and password. I have made no changes that would require a password. My site has always been public.

iweb 09, Mac OS X (10.6.1)

I had the same problem on my site, www.wirkman.com, starting this weekend, or Monday (I forget which). A number of my visitors have written me to complain.

I had changed NO SETTINGS, no on iWeb or my MobileMe account. This is obviously Apple's fault.

But Apple may have fixed it, since I don't seem to be seeing it when I visit my site using iCab (which I don't think I've logged into, on -- I logged into my site using Safari).

I visited a few sites mentioned in this string, and they all seemed to work.

So, do we know if the problem still exists? For sure? Or is what I've witnessed a transient non-error?

The issue does not seem to be happening as often, but it still does from time to time. It may not come up on a home page, but then it can appear when browsing through another page on the site. It definitely is sporadic, and it's affecting both of my sites, using 2 different MobileMe accounts:

I spoke to Apple support yesterday, and he told me that it was the way I had the settings with my domain registrar. I looked into it, and the settings are correct. They are set the same way they have always been set, and the problem just started last week. Others are having this issue, and they are with different domain registrars (I'm with www.namecheap.com), so it is not a registrar issue. The issue comes up with both Safari and FF, so it's not a browser issue either.

I'd love for Apple to acknowledge that there is an issue here, and announce that they are aware that it is on their side and not ours, and they're working on it. That would sure be nice! We're paying for the web hosting services, and some of us use these sites for our livelihood!

Okay, just did that with both of my MobileMe domains. So far, working fine. I'll be checking periodically to see if this issue comes up again. This has been a sporadic problem, so the issue suddenly disappearing does give me reason to hope, but I don't want to assume that the problem is officially gone yet! lol

God, I hope it is this easy to fix! lol

I'll report back later on whether this worked or not.

Good luck all!

Well, I wish I had good news to report. Unfortunately, removing the domain name, saving it like that, and then registering the domain name with MobileMe again, did not solve the problem. The issue is sporadic, and it has returned. I tried clearing the cache, thinking it had to do with stored data in the Safari browser from before, but it continues to persist. I guess I have to go back to Apple and deal with them, because this is an issue that is persisting, and is not just affecting my sites, judging by the other comments on this thread.

The same thing was happening to my site earlier today using Firefox on a Windows PC at another location. So it definitely is not my IP or computer issue.

Please report back here on whether this fix idea worked for you. Keep in mind that the issue is sporadic, and give it some time before announcing that you're problem free! And if anyone chats with Apple and gets a solution or any news at all from there, please let us know!

Marc1975 on the "MobileMe" part of this forum made a very good suggestion that seems to have solved the problem. It seems this problem arose after Apple had made some iDisk changes to the MobileMe service.

Log in to MobileMe and in your iDisk preferences, uncheck the box that says "allow visitors to make changes to your public folder". Then save the changes and log out. I have done that for both of my domains (in two separate mobileme accounts) and haven't seen the problem return yet. The problem has been intermittent, so I still worry about seeing it again (maybe I'm just being paranoid now!), but so far, so good!

Cheers 🙂

I still have this problem and i don't know how to solve it.
People visiting my site start writing me about password problem and i really need a solution as soon as possible. Apple, are you listening? This problem started after your last update on October 9 http://www.apple.com/mobileme/news/2009/10/idisk-public-folder-updated.html
It's time to give us a solution.
