Does anyone have photos of a good ACD 23"?

I need some technical help from users with good ACD 23" screens. I need to see some photos of good ACD 23" screens so that I can decide if it's worth returning my bad screen again for another replacement or not...

I've been following these threads since August 04 hoping that Apple will solve the ACD 23" color problems described and shown on this page:

http://DreamLight.com/insights/bugs/hd23.html

I'd like to have my replacement unit either repaired or replaced again, but don't want to waste my time returning it again if it won't help.

At this point I've seen a few posts from users who claim to have "good" ACD 23" screens. So far though, I have not seen any photos that bear out those claims. I'd like to see photos of "good" ACD 23" screens (23" only, that's the one with the worst color consistency) showing a solid white and solid gray desktop so that I could see for myself if there really are any "good" ACD 23" screens out there yet...

I can't simply rely on any verbal descriptions from anyone else because different users have different color sensitivity and different color needs. Something that looks great to one user may not look so great to another user who may need more consistent color.

I'm sure that a stereo that sounds fine to me may not sound so great to a professional musician... and I'm sure that such a professional musician wouldn't rely on other's descriptions of such a stereo, he'd want to hear it for himself...

One example of why this ACD 23" causes problems for me is that if the Photoshop tool palette is on the left side of my monitor in it's default location, and I put white into the color chip, it looks like light yellow rather than white. Something on the left of my monitor looks warmer than it is and something near the center looks cooler than it is... All this can wreak havok when you are working with subtle color, if you can't rely on what you see...

So, if you have a good ACD 23" (23 inch only, that's the one with the worse color problems) and would like to show it, please take at least two digital photos of it. One with a solid white desktop and one with a solid medium gray desktop like the photos referenced above. Post them on your web page and post a link here. That way we can all judge for ourselves if any of the ACD 23" screens have good enough color for our own purposes...

Thanks,
-MikeS

PS. Please stick to the specific technical subject of this thread without drifting off into any marketing issues or flame wars or this thread will probably be deleted just like the previous one was... I really just want to see some photos of a good ACD 23" in order to decide if I should return my existing bad ACD 23"... I'm sure it would give a lot of us on this forum some hope as well...

I'll take the requested photos and place them on my website tomorrow.

Right now I only have one lamp in this room, and it's a 24W compact fluorescent, which isn't very camera friendly (and I don't have a fantastic camera anyhow). Tomorrow I should be able to use the sunlight to my advantage.

As of right now though, I'm enjoying this thoroughly. And it's nice having that 80lb oversized tube off of my desk. Probably could get a smaller desk. Hmm...

One question I have is - are all the 23" made/produced in the same place?
Is there any difference in the occurance of the problem from the various places around the world that put the things together. ie is the pink problem only in USA or is it everywhere? (UK, Europe, Asia, Australia?).

Apple will not admit to any problems, so we will not know when the bad panels stop shipping. They will probably then have to change the name to 24" to get way from the stigma this is creating.

I am holding off getting a new G5 until I know what monitor to get with it, EIZO are way too expensive for a big screen, HP L2335, Dell 2405, etc are not the sort of thing that is readily displayed in stores and I want to see the quality of the colour before getting the money out. Is the Lacie 321 any good?

Michael,
I MIGHT have found a good one (after finding 6 'pink' ones in 2 LA Apple Stores and almost giving up hope). I won't have access to it on a Powermac (it's on windows right now!) till early next week, but I'll take picture. There IS still a dirty edge on the right and left side 😟 but this is the first display I have seen that has no pink cast and the colour consistency SEEMS fine. Again, more early next week.
BTW - production date is March 2005 - so 'brand-new'.....
Cheers,
Dan

It seems to vary a great deal. For a "long" time I had no ghosting at all. Then it just started and was very bad with the ghost windows staying on screen for 5-10 min before finally fading. Right now, it seems very very slight with just barely discernible images remaining for only a few secs. Interesting thought that you can "erase" the ghost images by dragging an open window across them.

Thanks for posting the photos.

Unfortunately it looks like you're right David... the white photo shows the left edge has the dingy yellow and the gray photo shows the wide vertical band just left of center... It's not as bad as my screen, but it's still there, and mine got worse over time...

If you can't see it, just open the gray image and try scrolling it to the left and right. You then should be able to see the bluer/darker area of the photo moving left and right on your screen quite easily...

Well, it's not as bad as mine, but it still shows the exact same problems (yellow sides and blue band just left of center) in the exact same places. But I don't see the pink problem that some of them have as well... mine has all three problems...

Anyone else out there have any photos of a good ACD 23"?

Ok, I didn't have my camera with me when I visited these 2 shops, but you might be interested to ask the people there for further helps...

1. Visited the apple shop at White Plains NY on the 7 march, saw 2 bad and 1 good 23". Was told that the good one is just arrived for display. Perhaps you could contact them directly for pictures? I didn't take note of their series number...

2. Later same day, at CompUSA in NY city, saw 1 good 1 bad 23". Bad one with series no. 2A428. Good one is 4A451. Does this help?

I notice that the printing of the series no. at the base of the old 23" (2Axxx) is quite different from the new one with series no. (4Axxx). Sort of different design.... Anyone here with newer series no. than that??

Well, there doesn't seem to be any correlation between the serial numbers and production dates. I have a 2A serial number of a monitor that was build just earlier this month (March 05) ! And, mine seems to be fine (I can't take picture till Tuesday, but will post). When I say fine, I mean the dirty yellow edges on both sides ARE there 😟 but it's the first 23 I have personally seen that has NO pink cast and no 'stripe' off the center off the screen. Again, not perfect by a long shot, but 'better' (as for me the pink was the most distracting 'feature' and one I had observed on ALL 23inch the monitors in 2 LA Apple stores)....

Cheers,
Dan
