Does anyone have photos of a good ACD 23"?

I need some technical help from users with good ACD 23" screens. I need to see some photos of good ACD 23" screens so that I can decide if it's worth returning my bad screen again for another replacement or not...

I've been following these threads since August 04 hoping that Apple will solve the ACD 23" color problems described and shown on this page:

http://DreamLight.com/insights/bugs/hd23.html

I'd like to have my replacement unit either repaired or replaced again, but don't want to waste my time returning it again if it won't help.

At this point I've seen a few posts from users who claim to have "good" ACD 23" screens. So far though, I have not seen any photos that bear out those claims. I'd like to see photos of "good" ACD 23" screens (23" only, that's the one with the worst color consistency) showing a solid white and solid gray desktop so that I could see for myself if there really are any "good" ACD 23" screens out there yet...

I can't simply rely on any verbal descriptions from anyone else because different users have different color sensitivity and different color needs. Something that looks great to one user may not look so great to another user who may need more consistent color.

I'm sure that a stereo that sounds fine to me may not sound so great to a professional musician... and I'm sure that such a professional musician wouldn't rely on other's descriptions of such a stereo, he'd want to hear it for himself...

One example of why this ACD 23" causes problems for me is that if the Photoshop tool palette is on the left side of my monitor in it's default location, and I put white into the color chip, it looks like light yellow rather than white. Something on the left of my monitor looks warmer than it is and something near the center looks cooler than it is... All this can wreak havok when you are working with subtle color, if you can't rely on what you see...

So, if you have a good ACD 23" (23 inch only, that's the one with the worse color problems) and would like to show it, please take at least two digital photos of it. One with a solid white desktop and one with a solid medium gray desktop like the photos referenced above. Post them on your web page and post a link here. That way we can all judge for ourselves if any of the ACD 23" screens have good enough color for our own purposes...

Thanks,
-MikeS

PS. Please stick to the specific technical subject of this thread without drifting off into any marketing issues or flame wars or this thread will probably be deleted just like the previous one was... I really just want to see some photos of a good ACD 23" in order to decide if I should return my existing bad ACD 23"... I'm sure it would give a lot of us on this forum some hope as well...

No LCD (23" or otherwise) has perfectly even backlighting. (Which I assume is considered the problem here.) A very good LCD will generally have all values across the surface of the screen within <15% of each other, the edges often being darker than the center.

From what I understand of these posts the primary complaint about the 23" ACD is not the uneven backlighting, but uneven colour consistency across the screen.

Not quite...

I understand that LCD's are just not as consistent as CRT's despite Apple's marketing...

The problem however is not just with uneven backlighting that causes some areas to be lighter or darker than other areas, as seen in the Samsung pictures posted... It's more with the color shifts that occur on the Apple monitors...

The left and right edges have a yellow tint to them, which causes problems when using programs like Photoshop which typically place the tool palettes along the left edge... Sure we can move the tool palette... but for $2K I'd like to be able to use the entire screen... 😉

Then a little further in, the left side of the screen has a pink tint to it which also interferes with critical color work...

Then just to the left of center there's a wide vertical bluish band...

The only portion of this screen that has accurate color is from the center to about 3" away from the far right side... So that's about 1/3 of the screen...

If it was only the value or brightness that changed, it wouldn't be too bad, but since the color values themselves change across the screen from left to right, it makes it much less accurate to work on this $2K 23" ACD than the $400 17" Sony that I have attached as a second monitor.

In this thread I was looking to see photos of good ACD 23" screens to compare against my unit to see if it would be worth returning it again for a better one... So far, no one has been able to post a single photo of an ACD 23" without any of these color issues... It looks like the pink issue may have been addressed, but not the yellow edges or blue band just left of center...

Michael said" I understand that LCD's are just not as consistent as CRT's despite Apple's marketing... "

That's true. Apple marketing is usually rather bold in its assertions 🙂
Maybe this Eizo would fit your needs: http://www.eizo.com/products/graphics/cg220/index.asp.

Or else it looks like the Samsung / Dell panels do not have the yellowish colouring problem the LG-Philips 23" panels seem to have.

(Although I have to say it does not bother me too much. If it did, the 30" would be a nice if admittedly expensive way out...

I took back my first 23" (510) which did not have the pink tint but did have the yellow/lack of contrast edges and blue band and got a replacement (a 512 - so built less than 2 weeks ago).

And guess what - the new one has identical problems - as did every display on show at the apple store in Regent Street, London. I am now completely convinced that there is no such thing as an unaffected 23" display - although it seems they have fixed the pink.

The attitude of the staff at the store was interesting - the look of fake surprise when I said I was unhappy with the colour was classic "I haven't heard that before but you do get the occasional dud" and without further ado or even opening the box of the one I brought back I was given a new one - the latest model they had. ( If I take this one back I may just put a couple of bricks in the box!!)

Truth is though I am not sure I can face carrying the monitor into the middle of London and back - again. It's a two hour round trip and my arm still hurts from the last time. (Thank god it wasn't a CRT) And of course they would not let me try the monitor out in the shop first - probably because they know I would open every box they had in the vain search for a good one.

If it stays as it is I will probably (reluctantly) live with it as long as it doesn't get worse over time. At the risk of sounding like Goldilocks, the fact is I need a new monitor and the 20" is too small and the 30" is too big and the 23" is just right - or as it turns out - just wrong.

I feel sorry for the people that go and buy one without the knowledge gained by reading these threads - at least I knew what to look for and to ask for the newest model - I was told that they still have/are selling monitors manufactured in mid 04 - complete with pink tint.

I know some people have posted that they are happy with their display and I am happy for them - but I do not believe that those displays are any better than mine - it's just that some people have a less sensitive/critical eye. No offense intended. If you disagree prove it with a picture.

I have used Apple computers for over 12 years. I am on my 7th mac, my 5th monitor and my 3rd iPod. I have always loved Apple and and everything I have bought from them until now. I feel let down by their whole attitude to this 23" issue. Sticking your fingers in your ears, going la la la and hoping everyone will shut up and go away while taking their money is not what I expect from Apple.

Thanks to Michael for starting this thread (and others) keeping it going and being so reasonable - I agree wholeheartedly with your position - the fact is the marketing and the product do not match up.

PS Just thought I'd mention that I had a look at the 30" while I was in the store and although the colour consistency was much better the blue bars in iTunes also disappeared near the left hand edge.

Macworld.com and Macuser.co.uk have reviewed large LCD monitors and the SONY P234 has looked good, but the price is usually referred to as a down side ...but here in Australia they have just dropped a few hundred dollars and are now on a par with the HP L2335 (...which would be my second pick). Also like the implied benefits of the LACIE 321.

If Apple is not going to admit a problem with the current 23" ACD then lets stop worrying about it and buy one that works from someone else.

Phil,

I don't think many people in this or any other forum could afford the Eizo CG220. It is the only LCD or CRT screen on the market that covers the entire Adobe 98 RGB color space, and as a consequence it's over $6000 if I remember right. Also, I believe in a couple years, you will regret this purchase because there will be at least a half dozen screens that will have the same ability but at half the price : )

I will be getting an Eizo CG210, which is a slightly less capable model in terms of gamut but still far more capable than most other LCDs (including Apple's) and it has a swivel screen capability so that you can view vertical photos and layouts on the fly. Very cool and about $2700.

Hi Michael Scaramozzino,

I had my 23" exchanged 4 (yeah, four!) times. The last one was quite good but still had the washed out/pink left issues, only much less than my first one. It took me a very long time to decide, but I couldn't live with it.
So I bought a 30" ACD and it's absolutely perfect. No dead pixels, none of the issues the 23" had. I had both besides each other for a while to compare them!

I don't think that these displays will ever change. Today I spoke to a graphics pro who bought a new 23" manufactured in March 2005. He tested it for 30min in the store before buying it, BUT it is not issue-free. It was just good enough for him since he does nothing color-critical around the edges!

I read and contributed to several of the -bad 23"- threads here and as much as I'd like to simply show you photos of a "good" 23" I have none. I haven't seen any and I doubt anyone ever will...
