Magic Mouse keeps disconnecting from bluetooth

My magic mouse (with all updates properly installed and with USB Overdrive properly uninstalled) has a problem connecting and disconnecting from the computer. When I use the mouse for a few minutes, it will all of a sudden be non-responsive, and within a couple of seconds the "Connection Lost" message appears on the screen. If I wait another minute, and click the mouse button a few times, the mouse will reconnect. This happens periodically as I am using the computer.

In the console logs, I get these messages:

10/31/09 6:06:20 PM kernel [0eb48f00][AppleMultitouchDevice::willTerminate] entered
10/31/09 6:06:20 PM kernel [0eb48f00][AppleMultitouchDevice::stop] entered
10/31/09 6:06:24 PM kernel [0ffa3600][BNBMouseDevice::init][30] init is complete
10/31/09 6:06:24 PM kernel [0ffa3600][BNBMouseDevice::handleStart][30] Done
10/31/09 6:06:24 PM kernel [08701100][AppleMultitouchHIDEventDriver::start] entered
10/31/09 6:06:24 PM kernel [09f11680][AppleMultitouchDevice::start] entered

The first message is when the mouse disconnects, and the rest are when it reconnects.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

It really is worth fixing! Best mouse!

My magic mouse suffered from the batteries shifting downwards and not along the length:

When I lift the mouse and it hits the surface again. If your setup has multiple displays you do this a lot. And sometimes everyone reaches the end of the proverbial mousepad but needs to go... further.

THE FIX - I saw great suggestions of ~ 1 x 1" cardboard tile taped to the inside of the battery cover, i could only find a thin paper so I used a dime instead. Placed between the battery cover and the batteries It is slightly too thick but the problem disappeared instantly. I can mouse as athletically as I please now.

So I think it was not the length of my batteries but the diameter. And definitely not inerference or settings in OSX.

The issue definitely did vary between battery brands, but the big brands failed me sometimes too!

EDIT [[The reason it sometimes seems to re-connect on its own is probably the fact that people turn it upside down to check the green light or if there is debris on the lens, and they fall back ito place.]]

I have been having the same problem and am considering my 3rd replacement for the magic mouse. I just tried taking out the batteries and cleaning the entire mouse, and that appears to be helping a lot! I think perhaps dust gets in the bottom of the mouse and interferes with the contact to the batteries. Maybe that is why changing the batteries helped so many people?

I just cleaned by Magic Mouse battery contacts with a pencil eraser and, although its too soon to say for sure, it appears to have made the disconnects go away.

I was having serious problems with battery life so I finally got rechargeable. When I did, I started experiencing the bluetooth disconnect issue. I tried a few things like putting a folded piece of paper under the battery compartment hatch, but that didn't help too much.

FInally, I got a wooden pencil, freshened up the rubber/eraser on the pencil by using it on a piece of paper until it was all freshly exposed rubber and I used this to clean the contacts inside the mouse and on the batteries. I used canned air to blow out the eraser crumbs, but you can probably tap them out.

Again, I just did this in the last 15 minutes, so I may be premature, but I couldn't go 3 minutes before without a disconnect. I will post this and keep using my system and, if it disconnects again, I will follow up. If you do not see a follow up, assume that I am happily mousing away.

I've had the same problem with my magic mouse and from reading what you guys are saying it definitely sounds like a problem with the battery connections. Every time I even slightly tap my mouse it disconnects.

As a solution, I've rolled up a small bit of paper and jammed it in between the batteries, and also laid another piece of paper across the top of both batteries to make sure they are 100% secure. Seems to have fixed the problem so far.

What fixed this problem for me:

Folded a piece of paper so it fits in between the two batteries AND covers the batteries on top as to create extra filling between the batteries and the removable cover. T-shape fold if you will 🙂

Make sure it's not too thick, or the cover will pop loose.

This apparently prevents the batteries from moving enough to prevent what seems to be a hard reset due to battery connection loss.

I have also had problems with my new Apple Magic Mouse using it with my MacBook Pro. It doesn't seem to be a bluetooth fault, however Apple Support did take me through all of the appropriate resets, and have subsequently sent me a replacement Magic Mouse.

HOWEVER this is doing exactly the same thing, randomly disconnecting when it is either picked up or lightly tapped onto the desk.

I am a designer and my old Mighty Mouse was perfect and never a problem, this one is a nightmare as you can imagine the amount of mouse movement that is necessary when using design applications.

I don't know what to do now, whether to return this one to Apple too, or try and bodge a repair myself as people have suggested with a small peice of paper, however this does seem to take the shine away from having a well designed, and pretty expensive mouse!

Come on Apple sort it out!

Same problem here, random disconnects when the mouse is jarred. Can't really blame Apple in my case though, as the stupid cats that roam around my house have pushed it off the table a number times, causing the battery compartment to become looser than it should be I imagine. Have used the paper trick to give it more of a buffer and that seems to be working.

I know some will debate my thoughts... but what the .... recently I had problems with a new bluetooth mouse by logitech... read some other posts about similar problems with the logitech software.. that being the latest... basically the single click was resulting in a double click when trying to highlight a folder name etc... updated all the latest third party software and always set my click speed to the lowest in apple preferences... still had the problem.. but after doing a totally new install of my os... which many disagree with... found out that the mouse problem disappeared ... just relating my experience based on cause and effect..
