Using the latest version of everything. Firefox seems to work fine for editing the description for listing ebay items but in Safari you can't even hit return to skip to the next line. A lot of features are missing in Safari compared to Firefox when listing an item. How is this an ebay problem?

Occo, just because FireFox and IE work fine with eBay doesn't mean eBay is blameless. FF and IE are historically more accommodating for sloppy code, and do on the whole have more features than Safari in terms of the way they read and analyse code.

Installing FF is not hard and takes about five minutes.

I would be interested to know if all the people stating that they have no problems with eBay and Safari would try the exact thing the OP is reporting as a problem (naivgating to new lines in the selling description box using the enter key) rather than making general comments about how eBay works fine with Safari. Thanks.

It has nothing to do with "blame." IMHO, eBay has never prioritized Safari. I think anyone with extensive experience of eBay (myself: over 2000 auctions) knows that it is basically a huge, unwieldy, kludgy site that is always in flux and slow to respond to systemic problems. Apple, on the other hand, is comparatively nimble. So in a situation like the one under discussion, I would hope that Apple would deal with it asap because I have little faith that eBay would.

BTW, the problem is not only that one cannot use the Return key to go to the next line, it is also that the entire formatting bar above the description box is simply not visible or otherwise available to some Safari users.

And yes, it is quite easy to simply switch over to FireFox for this task. But a lot of users (my 84 year old mother who auctions books to support her local library, for example) find it confusing and upsetting to have to switch. Hopefully, Apple will get on this soon and solve the problem.

Why should eBay prioritise Safari when 98% of Internet surfers don't use it?

I think that using FireFox (or another widely used browser) all the time would be less hassle. If I don't find that a particular browser fulfills my needs, then of course I will switch.

Obviously this will cause problems for people like your mother. But as you can install FireFox for her and tell her she has to click a different icon in future, I can't see that would cause many problems. To the inexperienced eye, one browser looks identical to another anyway.

And if it is sloppy coding or similar that's the problem, then I highly doubt Apple will be lowering Safari's standards just to gratify eBay and its laziness.

Exactly my point. So glad you understood it. That's why it doesn't make sense to "blame" eBay.

Again, you've grasped the essence of the thing. Thanks for agreeing with me.

LOL. Tell me another! You should go on Letterman!

"And if it is sloppy coding or similar that's the problem, then I highly doubt Apple will be lowering Safari's standards just to gratify eBay and its laziness."

Wow. I take it back. You should have your own comedy show!

Well you are obviously here to cause trouble and have no desire to listen or start your own discussion, just piggyback off someone elses thread. If you want a bite, pal, go fishing.

And your silliest mistake here, amongst many was your wonderfully prophetic comment to me earlier in one of your posts here in someone else's thread was

You might want to moderate your tone a bit; I've seen posts get reported for just the sort of impatience and sarcasm you're employing.

???????????????? And yet you have developed into an abuser of almost every rule in the Terms of Agreement.

What's the old saying about practicing what you preach?

Have a wonderful Life. Yet another Case closed here, thanks to your good self.

Cheers

Perhaps I could help clarify this issue a little; this problem occurs when selling an item using the advanced listing method. In the "Describe the item you're selling" section, the return key appears not to function - it does however work in the basic selling mode.

I have seen this on my unibody Macbook Pro running Leopard (10.5.8) and Snow Leopard (10.6.1 and 10.6.2), on brand new installations, and after porting users over from Time Capsule. I find that it consistently doesn't work in advanced selling - I work around it by editing html in emacs and cut-and-pasting into the web form.

I concur with the original poster that other common browsers on the platform do not show the same issue.

Nonetheless, there appears to be an incompatibility between eBay Advanced Selling and Safari (4.0.4 in this instance) - whichever party (or perhaps both) the blame lies with - and it does need investigating further.

Perhaps I could suggest to the original poster to sign up for an Apple Developer account (free) and report your bug formally with a full description, at least that way it will get some serious attention.

avt.

Welcome to the forums.

Many, many thanks for putting your point so clearly, and shedding light on the subject.

I only ever use the advanced listing method, where I've always had this problem, and consequently was not clear in my original posting. The 'Easy Sell' option never crossed my mind.

I hope your excellent contribution may serve to inform other posters.

It seems we may all be correct in our own assessments of how Safari works for us with eBay.

Oh! and by the way - nice suit!

Kind regards, John

Some additional information; I'm typing this on a PowerBook G4 running OS X 10.3.9 and Safari 1.3.2, that I've just acquired.

As an experiment, I tried posting an item for sale on eBay last night, and the problem regarding the enter/return key being ignored in the advanced selling section applies with this setup too. Basic selling mode is still fine.

Perhaps this is a platform dependent CRLF order issue with eBay's advanced selling form?

This is a common topic on the eBay discussion boards. Many, many people have troubles of various kinds using Safari on eBay. My troubles were the same as previously commented on...I had no access to editing tools when creating a listing.
The same discussion is raging on their comment boards as to whether it is an Apple or an eBay problem. I ended up downloading Firefox, problem solved. But I think this is a wasteful and inelegant solution.
