iTunes just starts up by itself and it plays 1st song on my list

i'm having a problem that seems to be driving me crazy. itunes seems to randomly start up and play the first song in my library. just to note:

- i am running no 3rd party itunes widget
- only add-on i have is last.fm
- i have tried permission repair

does anyone know what is causing this. i really won't stop. i quit itunes, 10-15mins later its open again. any thoughts on what could cause this/how to stop it?

You can try reinstalling the current version of iTunes from https://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ over the top of the existing one. Or see this guide to uninstall iTunes from a Mac: http://www.inforaid.com/how-to-uninstall-itunes-from-mac-os-x-best-method/ then restore one of these recent builds direct from Apple's secure servers:

See also Empty/corrupt iTunes library after upgrade/crash for steps to roll back to the pre upgrade version of your iTunes database if required.

TEARING my hair out trying to solve this sudden OS X iTunes problem-no rent upgrades / downloaded.. even restarted-- iTunes constantly relaunching itself even from just home screen with no programs running

AND I THOUGHT I WAS SAFE FROM OC type of crap-- now 2 decades into MAC use and I get sacked with iTUNES that won't quit

and it's not easy to delete and reinstall part of OS X

H E L P as computer is worthless with this annoying probem

Happens with Safari OR Chrome!

Having the same issue. Problem started all of a sudden it seems about two months ago. I haven't upgraded OS or iTunes, out of fear of breaking plugins on some of the software I use (happened in the past and lost whole projects that used those plugins, which were never updated 😟)

Wish there was a simple fix or solution. How can you check what the application is doing in the background?

me too, noticed it since i installed 10.6.2. I am running 9.0.2 of iTunes as well... what is going on, it's doing it as I type this message, any other thoughts to solve this issue?

It only happens as I use the computer, if I leave the machine running all day, it won't launch iTunes or start playing music by itself, only as I use the machine. Has to do with keyboard or mouse settings?

Anyone else upgrade to a magic mouse recently? That's the only other thing that has changed for me recently besides the 10.6.2 update.

solved.

opened console.app and looked at what was going on(below). Boxee was installed but did not completely remove itself. It kept trying to launch a helper every 10 seconds:

09-11-14 1:23:04 PM com.apple.launchd.peruser.502[127] (tv.boxee.helper[469]) posix_spawn("/Applications/Boxee.app/Contents/Resources/Boxee/bin/boxeeservice" , ...): No such file or directory

looked up how to uninstall boxee on google and found the following, try it out, see if it works:

- open terminal and enter the following command:
launchctl unload ~/Library/LaunchAgents/tv.boxee.helper.plist

and then:

/bin/rm ~/Library/LaunchAgents/tv.boxee.helper.plist

(info from: http://forum.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=732
and: http://forum.boxee.tv/showthread.php?t=3860)

this will only work if you're having the same problem as me- as logged in console.app.

I've had the same thing happening on first my iMac, then my wife's dual G5 tower desktop, then yesterday my MacBook Pro! When I looked at console it showed:
11/14/09 12:01:25 PM com.apple.launchd[1] (com.google.Desktop.Daemon[27960]) posix_spawn("/Library/Google/Google Desktop/GoogleDesktopDaemon.bundle/Contents/MacOS/GoogleDesktopDaemon", ...): No such file or directory

and

11/14/09 12:01:28 PM com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[533] (com.google.Desktop.Agent[27961]) posix_spawn("/Library/Google/Google Desktop/GoogleDesktopAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/GoogleDesktopAgent", ...): No such file or directory
11/14/09 12:01:28 PM com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[533] (com.google.Desktop.Agent) Throttling respawn: Will start in 10 seconds

11/14/09 12:01:28 PM com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[533] (com.google.Desktop.Agent[27961]) Exited with exit code: 1

I thought I had completely uninstalled Google Desktop long ago. I found an uninstaller button in System Preferences for Google Desktop; it requires a system restart so I'm posting this now and will add an addendum after restart if that fixes the iTunes problem.

This just started happening to me too. Kinda freaky when The Beatles suddenly start playing Come Together at 2 in the morning!!

I've checked Console, and it doesn't show any events at the time it starts.

I've also checked (and removed) Itunes and all other dashboard widgets.

I've also downloaded a fresh copy of iTunes, but still no luck.

My latest thought is that perhaps some Ipod Touch app is interfering. (I was downloading some apps n the day the trouble began.) But the other night I turned off the Ipod completely, and iTunes still started up on the mac...

Anyone got any more ideas? I'm all out.

hey, I've been having the same issue. Freakin' iTunes keeps opening every time I close it. It started happening after a stint where I'd asked too much of my 3 year old laptop, ran it out of RAM and had some crashing. I fixed the problem by plugging in my iPhone, checking the box (it had been unchecked) that says "Automatically Sync When iPhone is Connected". Hit Apply. Then uncheck the box and hit Apply.

haven't had a problem since.

I'm having same problem with iTunes spontaneously starting up, but in my case random songs play, and only for a short time, usually between 10 seconds and a minute. Then the music freezes. Sometimes it will start up again on its own. Clicking on the play button will start the music, but again only for a short time.

I've tried downloading iTunes again, with no resolve.
This is a new iMac. I hope I don't have to hall it into the Apple Store.

Jan 27, 2010 9:25 AM in response to t0fu apple

I have been having this issue as well, for a few months now it will start up automatically, sometimes at night, sometimes during the day. Quitting usually results in it launching again, and after a few seconds to minutes it starts with whatever is on the top of the open window in itunes. And then it stops mid song, and starts again.

There are a few threads on this board describing this as far back as august of 2009. None of the fixes listed in any of these threads proves a permanent fix. It's not last.fm, it's not iTunes Helper in the login items. It's not the CD/DVD pref pane settings. It doesn't seem to be the shockwave flash plugin, since uninstalling doesn't fix it, although the error messages on the console are more frequent with it installed. But, it just launched while i typed this message and there's nothing new on the console. Here's a sample from earlier in the day, and last night though, and i'm not sure it's even relevant:

1/26/10 6:33:39 PM [0x0-0x23a23a].com.apple.iTunes[3881] Child process initialized.
1/27/10 8:40:01 AM com.apple.WebKit.PluginAgent[3719] Debugger() was called!

The debugger was called message is repeatedly posted, and the child process initialized is there a few times a day, but not necessarily when iTunes relaunches.

Just a tip for those of who who are going crazy with this: make a blank playlist, select the playlist in the left column and close itunes, or just keep it open. At least music won't randomly play.

Do any of you who are having this problem have parallels installed?

iTunes just starts up by itself and it plays 1st song on my list
