Magic Mouse Loses Connection

Okay, I have an update from my previous post...
Nothing is helping with my connection issue...BUT I do believe I have found the issue, at least in my case:
The power button on the bottom gets nudged off.
Started immediately looking for the green light on the bottom when the connection dropped, and what I saw was that the power button is somehow sliding to the off position, sometimes just the smallest smidgen, but apparently just enough to interrupt the power. I will be trying some things to take care of it, possible a piece of tape over it?



This is very frustrating indeed.

I posted earlier after having divined that the problem lay in the poor connection in the positive terminals. After a little more use—and a lot more drops—I just bit the bullet and bought some non-rechargeable 1.5V AAs, and now, a day later (4-5 hours of use) , I haven't had a single drop. For me, the issue is resolved: You MUST have 1.5V AAs, and not 1.2V.

this may sound stupid bcoz it is but i have to say anyways .....i put the batteries in the wrong way and the magic mouse still worked but kept losing connection....i never thought this could have happened .....usually one battery is opposite to the other and without paying enuff attention i put them in wrong ......STUPID i no..... both batteries have the + terminal at the top after doing this ive had no bother .........good luck .........

Solved the problem. It's actually quite simple...

After being TOTALLY FRUSTRATED with the INSANE amount of connection losses - I threw the Mighty Mouse onto the floor. It broke into pieces. Now it's not a problem anymore.

Too bad I had to waste a costly device. But honestly I'm happier using the old Mighty Mouse once again - at least that mouse works.

The reason for the recurring disconnections - mainly when it gets a slight jolt by lifting/putting it down on table or mouse-pad, is the weakness of the spring-loaded negative contact, especially when the opposite positive contacts are slightly oxidized.
To solve the problem, spray a bit of electric contact-cleaner on a piece of white, soft paper and rub gently the four contacts, especially the slightly recessed positive ones.

Actually after experiencing the same problem I think I found a way to avoid losing connection. You have to put aluminum foil underneath each leg of your chair, wear wool slippers, disconnect your microwave oven, clench your teeth on a metal spoon and it should do the trick.

Seriously, I really don't know why apple isn't addressing this problem with a recall or at least give proper support to the hundreds of users asking for help on this issue. This is as annoying as losing connection on an iPhone4 and in this case there is no free bumper case to put around my MM!!

I'm not sure what's happening with my mouse, I think there may be two issues.

1. The connection was dropping for just moments at a time and reconnecting. Enough to interrupt and distract me. The mouse always seemed to be powered on (green light) in this situation.

2. The mouse seems to be having power issues as well. Sometimes when I turn it on the green light is sluggish or simply doesn't come on. I try jostling, pressing the cover, switching on and off and not much seems to affect it. It will eventually come on but I don't know what triggers it.

These may be separate problems or different manifestations of the same problem.

All of these problems have just stated occurring after completely draining and replacing the original batteries. The new batteries are NOT rechargeable, they are normal 1.5V AA in the correct position. The battery level reads 100%. I have tried changing 1 of the batteries (I only have 3) to see if they had some kind of defect with no change. I want to stress that this NEVER occurred before changing batteries and has been a continuous problem for the last several days with brand new batteries.

I tried unpairing the mouse, removing it from the bluetooth device list, deleting the .plist file, restarting, reconnecting the mouse and adding it as favorite.

I just experienced experienced another momentary dropped connection while writing this post (problem 1). Not fixed by the .plist deletion solution.

For what it's worth, I've had the same symptom of losing connection to the magic mouse every few seconds. I've finally tracked my problem down to my first generation aluminum wireless keyboard (after the full-size plastic bluetooth kb, but before the two battery version). There seems to be some interference between the two, because since I unpaired the keyboard, the mouse hasn't lost connection once!

I have ditched the wireless keyboard for a wired one (Drill a hole through your desk it then looks wireless!!) This has 100% cured the problem, No problems for around 12 weeks now .Even when I changed the mouse batteries at 56% the mouse just reconnected it self without me pairing it. I am certain that there is a conflict between magic mouse and wireless keyboard.I have both wireless keyboards and had constant losing connection problems with both of them and the mouse..Had to keep a spare logitech mouse connected via usb on standby to reconnect everything when connection lost.Think Apple should ditch bluetooth on mouse!

I experienced all of the above regarding connection loss, and implemented all suggestions.
The specific issue I encountered:
1. MM would disconnect and connect if left untouched/stationary for approx 6-12 seconds.
This solution worked for me:
1. I disconnected my bluetooth link, this crashed my Mac?
2. I then paired the MM device with my XP machine, which saw and connected to the MM as a HID, function was void.
3. I then paired the MM with my laptop which runs Leopard, worked perfectly.
4. Re-started Mac Pro. Conversely, I did not need to pair at all, OS found it and is now functioning as it should.

I appreciate this fix may not work for all.

Suddenly, I have this problem too. It happens when I wake my iMac from sleep. The mouse won't move. The light on the mouse is flashing indicating it has no Bluetooth connection. But when I check Bluetooth on my iMac it says it is active. This happens not every time, but every few days.

So far I have tried:
1) Resetting PRAM and NVRAM. This solved the problem only the first time.
2) Shut down the iMac, pull out the mail plug and plug it in again after 10 seconds or so. This solved the problem, but not permanently.
3) Delete the file com.apple.Bluetooth.plist, shutdown the iMac, pull out the main plug for 10 seconds, startup again. This was the last thing I tried and I hope this will solve it permanently. Time will tell.

I have suffered this same problem for a while now and after reading through all the posts here and tried out the various bluetooth/preferences related suggestions to no avail fora couple of months I returned to an ugly but reliable wired mouse. Yesterday - after reading additional posts put up in the interim period - I entered a fit of "what the **** did I buy the thing for in the first place" and gave it another shot with the resulting conclusion:

It is the battery compartment not bluetooth that is the issue here. I also only the problem after I changed the original supplied batteries to regular copper tops (1.5 AA) and I simply inserted a slice of an old business card between the batteries and the compartment "door" (to close any give in the gap so to speak) and hey presto... no more connection issues.

Considering that in the history of all things battery powered that I have owned I have never had a similar issue it's a bit sad that Apple puts aesthetics so far ahead of whether it will actually work in the long term. The Mighty Mouse was a total piece of **. We have had many in the office and only one has a wheel/ball/rolling zit that continue to function to this day.

I also have an iPhone 3G which having been hijacked by updates in iTunes has had to have been gutted and restored so many times now that I'm not going to start in on that.

Oh merry band of Ma(c)sochists. Resistance is futile.

Hmmm, tonight the Magic Mouse lost contact again. I rebooted my iMac and everything is OK now. But it doesn't give confidence. 😟

In my case, I don't think it are the batteries. Until now, it happened every time I wake my iMac from sleep.

dodgy battery compartment for me too! great advice!!! was very near to throwing my mouse away due to constant "connection lost" syndrome! tried the trashing bluetooth preferences tip (which made perfect sense to me) and "new user" advice, but it still went haywire ... dropping out every 30 seconds ... but packing out the battery compartment with paper to stop them slipping has worked a charm!

My magic mouse constantly looses the connection. I have tried everything I have read on a variety of forums. Among them:

1. Moved bluetooth devices away from mouse.
2. Deleted the two bluetooth preferences files and restarted.
3. Put in fresh batteries
4. Made bluetooth mouse and keyboard favorites

Nothing works. I have never dropped the mouse or otherwise harmed it. I just don't get it. It seems thousands of users are having trouble with this.
