LG 390 Blu-Ray player with WiFi

I am trying to connect to my AirPort Express router with an LG 390 Blu-Ray player. The LG Blu-Ray player sees my network (including the network name and protocol) but cannot connect via either a "Push Button" or manual mode where you enter the SSID network name and password.

I have run across a couple of cases via Google where people say AirPort Express works fine and others that say it doesn't work with the LG. Any suggestions?

Thanks for the info.

If you have a few moments, can you open AirPort Utility (Hard Drive > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility), click Manual Setup, then click the Wireless tab below the icons.

Radio Mode should be set to something like 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible). If you have it set for 5 GHz, the LG could probably "see" the network, but may not connect.

Check the Wireless Security setting as well If it's WPA/WPA2 Personal, (I believe this is the default setting for the AirPort Express) try changing to simply WPA2 Personal. Update to save changes and see if that helps. If you don't see that choice, hold down the option key on your computer when you click on the Security selection box.

If no luck there, I would try temporarily changing the Wireless Security to None to make sure you can connect that way. Then, it may a trial and error process.

WPA/WPA2 is supposed to accept a regular password without having to enter a network "key", but that might be something to check as well. You can find your network "key" by clicking the Base Station menu (at the top of the screen near the Apple icon) and selecting Equivalent Network Password. It's a very long series of letters and numbers.

Please post back on your progress.

Bob... Thanks so much. The Radio Mode is set to 802.11n (802.11b/g compatible. The Wireless Security is set to WPA/WPA2 Personal. I will try changing this as you indicated to WPA2 Personal and also "None". Will doing this lose the old password? I found the "key". Boy! that is long.

I am going try these changes tomorrow because I have taken down my temporary setup I had going here. When I started working on this today I found my AirPort Express was too far from the LG BD 390 so that it was not even coming up on the LG when I did the network setup step. I had strung some pieces of ethernet cable and got it closer to the LG. This resulted in the LG at least recognizing the existence of my network. I wonder if an AirPort Extreme would have a better range?

I think it may, so jot it down before making any changes. You will probably need to enter it again in AirPort Utility when you switch back from no security to one of the other settings.

Apple's specifications are the same for both devices as far as broadcast power, so no difference there.

Bob... I got back to it this afternoon. WPA2 Personal and "None" on the security levels didn't do it. And putting in the key didn't either. On the key -- I tried 4, 8, & 10 characters, but didn't try the whole thing. Finally I bought an ethernet patch cable and strung it between my iMac ethernet port and the LG and then turned Internet sharing on. That worked. LG strongly recommends the wired option in their manual. I guess what I'll do is either buy and AirPort Extreme so I'll have wired ports or a low cost wireless router with ports. Intrex has a nice one, but it doesn't say anything about Mac compatibility.

Glad you got this going. Ethernet is always best.

If you don't want to run a cable or it's not feasible, try a pair of ethernet powerline adapters. One plugs into an AC socket near the router and the other near the player. The adapters use the AC wiring in your home to transmit the signal. You'll need short ethernet cables from the adapter to the router and on the other end from the adapter to the player.

These work great in most cases and will offer better performance that wireless. I highly recommend them if you can't run a straight ethernet cable. Best Buy will have 4-5 models to choose from and most major electronics places will have them as well.

I found one more way to do this. It requires an AirPort Extreme and an AirPort Express. What I did was set up the AirPort Extreme and then extended my wireless network with my AirPort Express. I plugged the AirPort Express in an outlet near my entertainment center (including the LG), and ran an ethernet patch cable from the AirPort Express to the LG. Works fine. When I ran the Network setup on the LG, I selected "Wired" and hit "OK".

I had the same problem with my brand new LG 390, but found that entering the "pc" version of the WEP Key instead of my mac-friendly, easy-to-remember password did the trick. Once the LG had that, everything worked just like it was supposed to, without any other changes.

Recommend trying this first!
