"Headsets are not supported on your Bluetooth hardware."

I'm on Tiger, a PowerBook 15", 1.25 GHz. I just bought a Motorola HS810 BT headset - following the instructions at the Apple support site, I launched the Bluetooth Setup Assistant and attempted to add device.

But when I select headset as the device to add, I get dumped to a screen saying: "Headsets are not supported on your Bluetooth hardware."

So I tried adding any device - I get a menu of visible devices, and it lists the headset - but when I go to advance to the next screen, once again I get: "Headsets are not supported on your Bluetooth hardware."

I've seen a number of similar but not identical posts suggesting upgrading the firmware - I'm on Tiger, so it's 1.526, no further updates available - updating the Bluetooth software - I'm on version 1.6, as far as I can tell, and no further updates available. I've read about zapping the PRAM, and done it, no change in symptoms.

So I'm wondering, is this a Tiger bug? Has anyone successfully joined a BT headset to a PowerBook G4?

Many thanks,

I am getting the same message with a Princeton class 1 version 2 dongle (Model PTM-UBT2) and a Jabra BT200. The dongle uses the same CSR BT chipset as the Apple internal Version 2 + EDR chipset being used in later Powerbooks, etc. Running the firmware dater 1.2 gives me messaget that no Apple module is present. Selecting other devices in the BT setup finds the Jabra but I get the Headset not supported message as well. So APPLE, if you read these fora, it would be nice if you would update the firmware updater to support other non D-Link modules like the Princeton and other models mentioned in the 70-odd posts here so that we could all enjoy the headest profile on non-DLINK hardware—which by the way is pretty awful about range and noise, Any chance that this coud be done before Leopard pounces—say in 10.4.3!

Here's the profile of my Princeton dongle using the CSR chipset for version 2 + EDR. Tomorrow, I will also post the specs from a new G5 iMac with built-in BT Version 2 + EDR to see if I can spot the difference. Maybe there is hack to to the firmware updater get around these Apple-unsupported dongles!

This problem won't be fixed because it was a decision on day 1 of the updater. Period.

Your Princeton claims to be Bluetooth 2.0+EDR? It isn't in the view of Mac OS X. It behaves like an headset unsupported Bluetooth 1.1 device. The HCI version must be 2 or 3.

By the way you seem to have four Apple IDs. Make sure to use one only in the future and try to close the other three through Apple support personal.

I'm glad I discovered this thread. I'd noticed that the Apple Store doesn't sell any BT headsets, and had concluded that this means that they are unlikely to work. Now, I see that because my firmware is up to date and because Headsets are an item in the BT menu that I'm allowed to search for, I stand a reasonable chance of success. I'm going to buy a BT Headset ... Now all I have to do is decide which one. The reviews I've seen suggest the Plantronics is pretty good.

Does anyone notice that the BT icon in the menu bar sometimes disappears, and sometimes moves around all of its own accord?

Thanks Alex. I don't know where four Apple IDs have come from—I have only ever had and used this one. I will check it out. The Princeton box definitely says version 2 class 1 and so does their website. I took the part and installed it on an XP machine using the supplied drivers on CD. There, it is clearly a rebranded Toshiba device and it is using a BT stack written for Toshiba by CSR. The specs are exactly as advertised. I went back to the Mac and tried checking what the range is using an Apple wireless keyboard—better than 100 m (class 1)—SO it seems clear the problem is that OS X doesn't correctly recognize it and it needs a firmware update. Occasionally I have hacked plists to get OS X to recognize devices chipsets that OS X does have drivers for but not the vendor ID and it has worked almost every time. What are the chances with doing this on the firmware updater? Close to zero?.
The solution is to persuade Toshiba or Princeton to release OS X drivers. Meanwhile, it is on the XP machine and working well with a Jabra BT200, which is always very noisy when used with the D-Link BT120, but is noise-free under XP. Stronger signal perhaps exlains this.

Charles:

Did anyone answer YOUR question? It doesn't appear so and I haven't seen a shred of useful info for our situation in the other posts...although some others have found fixes. Maybe I missed something.

I have virtually the same problem as you and the most current OS (10.4.3) so there is no update. I'm using a Jabra BT250v. (I really like the performance with my Treo 650 so far.)

There must be a solution for this, I hope. And as far as headsets not working with Tiger current, why even give you the option of selecting a headset if there is no way it will work? Gotta' be a fix.

Situations like this are why I prefer to buy laptops...they're easier to throw!

Doh!!

OK...here's the source of my confusion:

The Bluetooth FIRMWARE update is 1.2. This is DIFFERENT from the Bluetooth SOFTWARE version that is part of the OS.

When you're using 10.4.3 and About This Mac shows a Bluetooth version 1.6.6, "updating" to 1.2 doesn't make sense.

I made an assumption that when I updated the OS, that BT was also updated. (It was, just not the firmware).

Installing the 1.2 firmware update was the fix and the BT250v works great.

This is because I have this standard reply:

Using a headset needs several steps even needed if you have the latest computer or Mac OS X release. Please make sure to follow them in order.
  1. Download the Apple Bluetooth Firmware Updater
  2. Install it
  3. Launch it from Applications > Utilities > Bluetooth Updater
  4. Apply it to your adapter (takes very long).
  5. Start the Apple Bluetooth Assistant and select Headset. Do not use anything else!
  6. Make your headset Bluetooth visible. Look up the manual of your headset how to do that.
  7. Now select the headset in System Preferences > Sound.
In most cases step 3 is missed. You have to start the installed updater yourself (do not ask me why). Step 4 fails if your Bluetooth USB adapter is not supported by Apple and you have to go for a D-Link DBT-120 USB adapter.

I am trying to set up my sony ericsson HBH-608 BT Headset with my mac using a Belkin F8T003 Ver 2 Bt Adapter, but i keep getting the message "Headsets are not supported on your Bluetooth hardware". Looking through the discussions i see that lots of people have the same trouble. I wonder if anyone could help me get connected. I am not brilliant with computer jargon so laymans terms only please. I have tried to update the firmware like a few people have done but keep getting a message saying nothing to update. I'm not sure whether the adaptor is the right one as i have had it a year or so but the headset is new.

Any info welcome

many thanks
