ATV not resume from shutdown

Same here. Using a Denon amp. Very frustrating, Apple TV has gone from the best media player in the house to unplugged until this is sorted.

Try connecting it using component for video & optical for sound if your A/V receiver allows, that is what I finally ended up doing

Added on more to the mix. Mine is connected via HDMI to an Onkyo SR-875. Was working perfected up until the 3.0 update.

Same issue with my HDMI Marantz a/v after latest AppleTV update. All worked without issue prior.

Long time apple user ( early 80's ) and this is not what I have come to expect from an Apple product.

Need some resolution from Apple Support now.

Add me to the list: I have the same problem with a Yamaha receiver. Except switching TV and audio input back to the Apple TV locks up the Apple TV whether it was in standby or not.

However, I am able to re-boot the ATV by pressing and holding Menu and "-" keys on the remote.

I am about to turn the ATV off until this is resolved. I thought v2.x was bad! Very frustrating.

Similar problems here, but here is the fix (or workaround) I found:

1. Screensaver! Turn off the Screensaver on both the ATV and PC (can't vouch for a Mac). When they kick in trouble starts with lockups, content deleting etc. Screensavers are unnecessary anyway with flatscreen monitors and tv's. Problems are gone with screensavers off.

2. HDMI problem! Change your output resolution to 720. My HDMI switch box now works perfectly! You'll never see the difference anyway.


My ATV went from worthless to working well with just those two changes. All of these problems kicked in with the new firmware update. Works fine now.

I found a workaround that has worked every time I have tried it. This assumes the ATV is in Standby mode.

Before switching to the audio and HDMI outputs from the ATV, I press the "Menu" button in the ATV remote. And then wait 5-6 seconds for the light on the ATV to come on. Then I switch the receiver and TV to receive the ATV audio (via optical cable) and video (via HDMI).

I think the key is to let the ATV "wake up" before asking it to do anything else. It seems to lock up whenever I press Menu or Play on the remote or switch inputs to it before the ATV light comes on.

One other note: when I am done with the ATV, I always use the "Standby" selection on the menu rather than pressing "Pause/Play" for 6-7 seconds. I then switch the audio and video back to the cable DVR. It seems to stay in Standby mode when I do it this way.

I switched the output to 720p from 1080i, and turned off the screensaver and it works. The ATV now wakes up properly!

I just bought an Apple TV and fed it through an Oppo 3.1 HDMI switch ($99 as opposed to the $250 for an additional HDMI cable...) The Apple TV immediately told me that a software upgrade was available and I upgraded to 3.0.1. Whenever I switched back from the satellite receiver to Apple TV, the Apple TV would not respond - I'd have to power down and back up to get it to start. Eventually I reset the Apple TV to the factory settings (software version 2.4) and everything works well.

The Apple Expert was not aware of a problem with HDMI switches, despite this discussion thread, and suggested that Itry different switches until I find one that works. Unfortunately I don't have that much cash!

as has been discussed to death already, the workaround for this is to set your appletv to 720p (as opposed to 1080i or 1080p).

As you say, this is a workaround - not a solution!

you're not going to get a solution until it is fixed by a software update though, so until then this is the only solution.

I purchased a new ATV the last week of December 2009 and have the same problem with my ATV. I had the resolution set to 1080i. When I placed it in standby by holding down the play/pause button for 5-6 seconds and later turned it on; it wouldn't wake up. I had to either power cycle (pull the plug) or reset/restart it through the remote. I changed the resolution to 720p as suggested in the threads and it has worked. All components are connected via HDMI cables.

I have the same problem. HDMI connection does not seem to communicate properly connected to Yamaha receiver. I have also found that most of the time if I "wake" the Apple TV prior to switching the receiver inputs, it works, but try telling your wife and kids they have to do that if they want to use the Apple TV. As far as I am concerned, this device is useless until this issue is addressed and resolved. Unfortunately, we liked it so much originally, we bought 4 of them, as well as several other Apple devices to unify AV throughout our home. We are redoing our home theater currently, and if this isn't resolved in about two weeks, I'll just go with a different solution. Any suggestions?

Same problem here - getting fed up with scrambling around at the back unplugging the unit in order to turn it on. This does not make the AppleTV very family friendly when they want to use it. Come on Apple a fix please...
